General questions about 172

  Renault Megane
Hello,

I am newbie to the clio scene, and currently only own a 23yr old metro :dapprove: (all i could afford at the time ). i have spent a few bob on my current car to make it feel more at home, but i still want a Renault clio 172. all i would like to know is, wat prices are good to buy a used 172, and wat millage range should i go for. So i can do some fine tuning and upgrades. As well as wat the insurance is like in the on the beast??

Help would be gr8 so i can continue saving up

£2-3000 gets you a nice PH2 Model. I'd be more focused on servicing and maintenance that mileage. The cam and aux belt changers with tensioners is essential on these cars and should be done every 5 years or 72K. Get one that's had it done by a proper specialist as its a £500+ job.

Insurance is down to personal circumstances like anything else. Its not cheap though. My insurance at 21 with 4 ncb through adrian flux will be £1100 when I get one soon. I used to pay £1300 tpft on my ph1 172 at 19 with 2 ncb.

Insurance has gone up a lot recently, there where loads of older members 25+ paying in the £400's a couple of years ago, generally now this has gone up to around £600.

  Clio 172 cup
I pay £317 fully comp on a 172 cup

Insured for me 33 years old and girlfriend who is 26

I have 11 years ncb and she has 5

Living on a farm in the middle of nowhere helps too

There are quite a few low mileage 172s out there between £2500 and £3000, I even saw a 52 plater going with 25,000 miles on it!

A lot are at dealers too where you get Credit Card facilities, PX and 3 month warranty benefits.

Take your time and find the right car, don't hurry, take someone with you if you are prone to using your heart more than your head. Also, be prepared to travel.

Insurance is £470 for me, 37 with a 28 year old wife also on it, both clean records, inner city postcode.

That's odd... My postcode is KW9 and according to that link« I live in Kirkwall.

I live nowhere near Kirkwall. I live in the highlands of scotland :s

Will this make my insurance higher?

  172 cup
get a ph1 with good service history and with belts done, can get a good un for under 2k, upgrades and stuff you should wait till you can afford the price of ins on the car alone without any additions
i live in oxford 27yr old 10 years no claims =550 fully comp

Look for a 172 Cup and aim for

£2000 - £2500 mark for FSH, cambelt and aux belt done within 15k / 2 years, good condition all round including at least 6 months MOT with miles of 65k to 85k. I bought mine 3 days ago for £2k FSH 82.5k VGC and Cambelt / Aux done.

For 172 you can knock some money off the top of that as they don't tend to fetch as much money (I've found anyway), I don't know how much, say minus £200 or so off? The cambelt and aux job is circa £300 for a Cup model at a specialist with no aircon, but on other 172/182 models it's £465, so bear this in mind.

If your budget can stretch further, just aim for lower miles!

I'm afraid about half of the people in this thread are wrong. OP is about as far from scotland as you can get.

Whilst £2000-£2500 might get you a mint PH2 in scotland it will barely get you any autotrader results for PH2s in Southampton nevermind price, mileage or condition. Add £1000 to that price range if you want to buy a nice one from a dealer

youll prob pick one up dirt cheap by then mate, and yeah dont plough money into the metro lol

Dont worry im not going to, the metro is now satying as it is . manly due to the fact that id rather save for the new car rtaher then due a car up only to be scraped in years time :( lol. but im still salvaging wat i can from current like head unit and speakers
