Exhaust - Standard back box with non standard center?

I apologise if this is a stupid question....

I have a cat back stainless system on my phase 1, twin exit tail pipe is doing my tits in, too loud, and not to my taste. Is the diameter of the full system 2.5"? I'm wondering if I could just replace the back box with a standard item, and keep the stainless center.

Would this work?

I think standard bore is 2.25 so you would need a step down sleeve to make it work
