Dithering on buying this 182 - what do you think?

Went out to look at this 182 last night.

Very clean condition and only 36500 miles.

However, the chap selling it hadn't the V5 as he was waiting for it back after deciding the car wasn't suitable for his daughter after only a week or so. I didn't get to see the MOT either, which expires in November. There was a stamped service history booklet (last serviced early 2013), but no evidence of receipts, and crucially, no belt change.

I was expecting the seats to be half-leather and alcantara, but they were quite plain and not particularly sporty, with no logos or legend. It had aircon and cruise I think. I was a bit underwhelmed with the drive to be honest, but it was dark and wet. It didn't feel fast, or particularly eager to rev, and the clutch was heavy and the gear changes a bit vague - I know that's probably all normal. Handling felt good though, with amazingly flat cornering. New Michelin tyres too. I suppose the colour's a bit Marmite, but I'm warming to it.

It was priced very keenly at £2200, but it didn't grab me like others I've driven in the past (and not bought either). Am I too fussy or should I get it bought? I just expected it to be a little friskier and more fun?

Its the 182 cup so doesnt have all the goodies of a fullfat 182

Id personally get a fullfat with recent belts change. Pick of the bunch with a budget of 2200

Ah, that explains it - just checked one of the guides and sure enough that looks like the spec I saw.

Seller did say he'd take an offer - I wonder whether he'd knock off the cost of the change of belts...

Just look for anothrr one. Exhaust looks a bit funky too but that could just be the mounts.. or not

Forgot to mention, it has an aftermarket exhaust - no idea what make - sounds a bit throaty though!

Look at at least 4 imo 80% are shitters or money pits now imo ! That's why they are so cheap . Buy on proper history too. Also go in the daytime never see a car in the dark and rain.

Could be he bought unwisely has realised his error and wants rid. I wouldn't be buying a car I found so underwhelming.

how low do you think these cars will go to? since i bought mine prices have plummeted,gettin to a point now ,if you have spent money on yours,not worth selling..are they going to become classics? about 6 years ago i was offered a(1988) 205 gti 1.9 for £1800, 40000 miles..standard car.. good condition.. i left it.. good ones now can go for £10000
so if you can buy the above for say 1800 put it in a shed for 10 years.. then fix it up.. could you make money? what would 1800 be worth in 10 years in the bank? . in 10 years time all the rubbish ones will be gone or have 150,000 plus miles. so a 36000 mile one will be like gold dust..its a good colour and a cup.. just a though... ha ..

I forgot to add I was doing some research into it in the meantime, as it's a local car. It was brought up and sold by a dealer who chooses genuine, clean stock, well presented, with impeccable history, and full garage facilities.

I couldn't fault the condition, it was very clean and unmolested. Looking back on the drive, it was just a very different feel to my Skoda vRS diesel - like trying on a new pair of shoes and preferring the old pair. I don't think I was seated/positioned properly so gear changes weren't entirely comfortable, and I was driving somebody else's car!

I had doubts it was a genuine 182 because I wasn't familiar with the model history and options, but others have confirmed it's the cheaper Cup variant, which suits me fine.

I'll post up pictures when it's home tomorrow.

i think you got a bargain there... get the belts done and a service ,have a great little car.. a lot of people on here want cars for basically nothing..if you said it was £1000 some would say its to much... if you dont like it after a week i will give you £1000 for it,, ha it needs the belts doing and its had an extra owner ha ha .. good luck anyway..

It's going to feel different to a turbo diesel, with little low down shove and some buyers never get over this - describing the RS Clio as underwhelming. Just learn how to drive it to get the best from it. Good choice as it's a proper Cliosport (Cup).

Sounds like a good price considering the low mileage and it should clean up well, just get it serviced with belts and enjoy! :up:

Looks a good buy that. Shame you didn't get a nosey at the V5 or MOT though to confirm the milage. Finding good ones isn't as easy as you think. It's always best to buy from within a club, but that can mean traveling a good few hundred miles to view a car each time.

Selling a car after such a short time happens. I've had a lot of cars and might even sell my Clio that I've only owned a couple of weeks if i dont gel with it. Came from a long line of boosted cars so we'll see how it goes.

Car is on my drive now! Felt much tighter and comfortable than the test drive - all due to daylight and getting the best driving position.

Engine management flashed on and off a few times, but mostly stayed off. Did the error codes test and got t__h. Reset it it and nothing's back so far. Checked the paperwork with the car (still awaiting the main docs as previous owner wants personal plate transferred) and it was serviced in October 2013, and it's done 5000 miles since.

Bodywork and interior look to be in absolutely superb condition, with no real signs of wear, just the steering wheel showing the usual wear, but not really noticeable. It's more orange than I remember, and the exhaust is decidedly throaty. Really cr**p weather today, so I'll have to wait until things dry out before I start to go over it with a fine tooth comb and plan the next service and belts change etc.

sounds good mate.
get the belts done by a specialist (£600 ish)
and you have got yourself a decent buy there.
also have a look into the fastchip 98ron map. Best mod you can do on these for £150ish.

Indeed, there are some seriously cheap 182s out there. Been driving mine for the past few days and it's been a hoot - so much better than my Fabia vRS, which now sits all forlorn on the drive!
