Clio 182 buy or not?

  Renault Clio 182
I am looking to buy a new car in the next couple of months, really want a clio 182 (love cars) but I have little knowledge about the maintenance of cars.
Is it sensible to buy a 182 with little knowledge? Will the car be maintained sufficiently by just taking it for a service every 10k?
I don't want to buy one and then realise you need a good mechanical DIY knowledge!

I have read the buyers guide on here, so when buying I would take all the points into consideration to make sure I got the best I could find!

Any help appreciated!

They are ok on reliability not the best....engine wise they generally good if take care off, electrics are made of cheese so is engine mounts, engine components are not super reliable, they will fail sooner or later, injectors coil packs, dephaser and so on... But they fun fun fun

No worse than any other car as far as I've found. There always one bad egg though.

The cambelt is the only major issue as it isn't a straight forward job so it needs to have been done properly or budget the funds to get a poor job sorted.

I am going to be honest here. IMHO they are not that bad a buy secondhand at all. A friend of mine and his brother have respectively owned a Clio 172 and 182 respectively for 5 years. In that time the cars have seen work on them but no worse than a similar car for the age.

If it helps a 172 was not my first choice for a daily driver this time around. I had my eye on an Audi TT 225, BINI Cooper S R53 and a Volvo T5. In the end I am glad I got the Clio. It was in the best condition out of the all of the cars I saw from my range, the cheapest and probably the most fun. The 'reliable' Audi TTs all have their issues (the ones I saw certainly did) with even the Volvo T5s not being quite perfect.

Has it been trouble free? No, but no worse than any 11 year old car. In the 3 months and 3k miles I have owned it I have needed to do the following:

-The 'belts, including the dephaser pulley
-A full service which was done around 500 miles after me buying the car
-Puncture
-Brake discs and pads up front (someone did not clean the sliders out properly last time, thus badly corroding the inside of some otherwise great Brembo Max discs).
-Wiper Blades

Fingers crossed it should require much more than that but it wasn't that bad to drive and I suspect many would not have changed the belts when I did (5 years and 40k).

I would say that whilst some jobs are a specialist job (debatably the cambelt) the rest of the car is not too tricky to work on and relatively inexpensive to maintain. Out of all of the hot hatches I have owned over the years it has potentially been the best value, certainly close to the 205 GTi I owned with an Alfa 2.0 147 TS (OK, maybe a warm hatch) 306 and 106 GTI also being under that list.

However, I would say one thing. Buy the best car you can afford and IMHO don't fuss too much over the 172 and 182 thing. I am biased although mine seems to be producing as much power as a 182 from the recent RR day. However, I prefer the power delivery of a stock 172, something mine has lost with the remap if I am honest.

Thanks very much all for the replies.
All useful info! From what you have all said if I find one in good condition relatively close by I'll definitely go for it!
Hopefully in a couple of months I'll be back with some pics!!

I think they are a bit like Italian cars. They are generally reliable if they have been looked after correctly.
Abuse them and it will cost you though.

If you take your time, do some research and choose a good one you will love it.

Im only just starting to live mine after 6 months, I blame it on the crappy winter roads and poor tyres. Now thats sorted its epic. Only things getting away from it need at least 100bhp more!

I have minimal mechanical knowledge. I've had my 172 over 3 years now and it has never let me down, only expense has been tyres, brakes, had a major service and yesterday the expensive cambelt job! Cheap way to travel 25k miles.

I usually have to work on mine at least once a month lol, but I have no plans to change her anytime soon

Buy it and worry about the problems later.

Make sure it pulls well in the test drive obviously, but if it gets down the road well without making any horrible noises pull the wallet out and get on with it.

I think these cars are ideal. Thing do break but they are so cheap and supplies so plentiful it's easy to fix. They are also at a technology level which makes maintenance possible for the most part.

I bought mine cheap and have enjoyed bringing it back to a1 condition. I feel like Ed China!

I've tackled alsorts of jobs I don't do myself on other cars I've owned which I've been less inclined to do on higher end cars I've owned.
