car change?

  172 ph1
Not sure what to do and need some help :/ ive had my ph1 172 with few little extras for over 2 years now and have recently been looking down routes for bigger bhp etc but after looking into a megane 225/230 im now swaying towards buying one as the tuning potential is better plus its a newer car...bearing in mind i will be doing track days now and again and a yearly visit to the ring so its not as if its for motorway or buisness use its just purely to drive to and from work then abit fun on weekends!

just wondering what people think of them (if anybody has drove a stage 1/2 tuned megane?) and am i mad and should stay with the ph1? please try not to be biased lol

  GW Stage 2 R26
I've had 3x 182s including a trophy a 172 cup a 255 v6 and various other hot hatches.. Dc2 integra etc and now have a Megane 230 r26 with a stage 2 Map(275bhp/ 330 torques) and its epically quick compared to the others.. In a straight like and grip/handling wise. Down a twisty B road you can just stick it in 4th and surge along on the torque travel way faster than a wrung out 182. Make sure you get a good one mind as they have there fair share of problems. I'd also only go for the r26 with the LSD etc.

nice one mate ive been looking today at ly r26's for around 6.5-7k with 50odd on so should be all good with belts done etc? looking back at september when i was last at the ring they were epic and standing up to 911's etc no bother

Best bang for buck imo. Megane is great don't get me wrong, my 225 cup is running 270 bhp and is great fun on a B road but the Clios are more fun imo. Running costs are obviously higher with the megane too.

I would have another ph1 in a heartbeat.

How much of a difference is it after being remapped? Been tempted to do this since I brought mine, had it a year now. Just dunno if I fancy spending X amount on it. Pm me if you prefer.

You only get the keyless entry on the r26 with the lux pack on later ones. Which mine has. No real probls with that. The steering hubs tend to go and the window regulators constantly fail.. So much so renault pay 72% of the cost.. Ye nearly all r26s will be 5 years old now so make sure the belts are done. Mines an 08 and due in march.. I drove a few including 225s, phase 1 and 2 and a trophy and the r26 feels completely different.
As regards to tuning the figures mine are giving are with an up rated intercooler, cat back system and forge recirc valve. And the remaps. Mine has stage 1 and stage 2 and the RS tuning box to switch between maps.. Standered, stage 1 and 2. I tend to run it on stage 1 which is about 260bhp 285 torques and is more than quick enough.. Plus there has been a few engines go pop with over 300lb of torque. And the clutch life is shortened. The figures mine put out are your very limit without up rating clutches and con rods, pistons etc.

The difference from standered to stage 1 is massive. Almost feels like a quick ish torquey diesel to me now on the standered Map. Stage 1 is what the car should be like standered. Feels inbelievably quicker.. And of corse stage 2 is a big. Jump again especially with the in gear torque. Plus a stage 1 remap is £400 odd quid.. Very small money for massive gains.. Unlike the clios.

There is also far less torque steer than a 182 with that trick steering hub the Meganes have. If you do go for a phase 1 make sure it has cup suspension and expect some big bills as most will be tired now. Oh and get a white one ;-)

Never came across torque steer in any of my rs clios. The megane handles the extra power with ease though.

Can you remap the megane with it being standard? Or does it need any mods done? cheers

White was only an option at the end so it tends to be 2008 ones that are white.. Yes you can map them without the mods.. You just don't get as good gains. And Paul at RS tuning recommends those mods. I'd up rate the intercooler anyway.

I've owned nearly every Renaultsport, and if I was to own one again it would be an R26.

A stage 1 map totally transforms the car.

Cam and aux belts, 5 years or 72k. Plus water pump etc. got a quote of Renault for £750 yesterday. A specialist like RS tuning or fred will do it for £500 ish.
