Underneath the bumper, those flappy bits which make a popping noise, clearly it isn't backfire.

Turbo waste gates or to let the air out when you shut the doors? you decide.

Those flappy bits let air out of the car when you shut the doors/boot.

If they weren't there, your ears would burst everytime you closed the door.
