Cambelt Q's, can't find an answer

  Clio Sport 172
I've been searching the gazillion threads on the topic and can't find an answer so please excuse me for posting up ANOTHER cambelt thread.

2002 Clio 172, 75,000 miles and no record of a cambelt change, so it needs sorting.

Firstly, how much are the specialist locking tools?

Secondly, what's the problem with marking the existing cambelt and pulleys and just making sure the new belt goes back with the same number of notches between pulleys? I can't see how the timing could change doing it this way so can only assume there are access problems?

Thanks in advance......Newbie from Burnley BTW.

Seems straightforward enough

Danny, thanks, I read that thread but I'd like to find out how much the specialist tools are. I'll give a dealer a ring in the morning.

You a mechanic or just wanting to see if you can do it yourself? i can tell you as most people will a cambelt change on one of these cars is not a straight forward job, your best off taking it to a specialist

I'll probably take it to a specialist, keeps its value up afterall.

I'm still curious as to how the timing can change if you mark the belts and gears and count the teeth?

the pulleys aren't keyed to the crank and cams. once you remove the crank pulley to remove the belt, the sprocket can move completely independantly
