Banging at 4k revs, on full throttle in 2nd?

Hi all, think this is the 2nd or 3rd time ive asked for advice on this noise..

Basically, when i give it beans in 2nd gear, i get into the higher revs, around 4k+ and then theres a loud banging and clattering noise, its almost as if the engine is skipping or missing or something...

Reminds me of a push bikes gears.. when there was a missing tooth, you would peddle and the chain would slip until it cought the next tooth.

Anyway.. it only really happens in 2nd gear, and the odd time in 3rd.

If i gently go up the rev range in 2nd then it wont make the noise, its only when my foot is planted.

Any ideas at all?

Could be knackered engine mounts. Manifold hitting the sub frame. Does it do it in 1st?

Ive never heard it in 1st, ive replaced that twisted mount and its not changed anything, ive had the cat - manifold gasket replaced which stopped the banging for about an hour..

Ive given the exhaust a good shake and it doesnt seem to be hitting anything and i cant see any marks where its been knocking?

hmm not so sure then. Normally if its engine movement its worst in 1st gear under full throttle.

As Brett's mentioned, upper engine and upper gearbox mounts are usually the culprits for knocking noises under hard acceleration.

How would I know if they were knackered or not? And which one is the upper gearbox mounting?

Upper gearbox mount is underneath the battery.

Try rocking the engine back and forward and check for excessive movement.

The only other way I know of to check them is to take them out and inspect.

Grab hold of the engine (when cold) and give it a good rock.

Top gearbox mount is under the battery.

Had this prob too mate mines were a few culprits.

1 although exhaust was solid when engine was off there was a bolt that had snapped off that attached the cat to the mani caising it to vibrate under full throttle.
2 upper engine mount. again rock it when cold too see if any exessive play.
3 lower gearbox mount. best replacing both if your doing one.

Thats the problems i had that ive now fixed and car doesnt knock or bang.

Ive tried rocking the engine alot, as hard as i can and it doesnt make a sound! abosultely baffled..

Martin, its not that sort of sound.. more a cracking/clattering sound. really hard to explain, ill maybe try and get a video sometime soon if my phone will record the sound!

I have exactly the same issue foot planted in 2nd I get bangs and stutters sometimes in 3rd too but not if I gradually plant foot. Have taken it to two garages locally so far to no avail, have effectively had a shrug and a meh noise made at me and injector clearner was suggested , have tried that and no better.
its not the traction control ESP thingy as dash not lighting up ( it does work when it's wet)
dunno if it's the same for thread starter but I have a fair amount of black soot round the exhaust at the mob and the car doesn't feel quite as kick u in the back at 5k as it did.
have replaced coolant sensor , maf and both lambda but car still does it.
cam belt was done on mine just before I got it was wondering if a timing issue could cause this? (not at a specialist at a local garage)
My mpg has also dropped but that was I think to both my lambdas cooking at the same time ( would both of em dying point to anything?)

My car is completely standard except for k&n kit ( yes I know standard better I do keep trawling eBay for 1 , twas the previous owner not me)

Sorry am not the best car person in the world from a technical point of view so if I have asked some dumb questions sorry ,

Deadrabbit, it sounds exactly the same. My engine is completely standard, and I had the belts done around 5k miles ago at renault, it made this noise before and after.

I've used injector cleaner a few times and it makes no difference to the noise.

I've replaced the twisted mounting and my engine mounts look fine.

Really don't have a clue what else it could be?

This maybe a completely retarded question, but I don't know anything about the inside of a gearbox.

Could 2nd gear be on its way out and something is splipping in there?

Try undoing the 4 bolts that hold the upper engine mount to the car and then pulling the engine forward. Sometimes when people have had cambelt changes the garage that have done the work don't fit the engine mount in the correct position. There's a guide in the guide section on how to do it actually.

But my car was making the noise before and after the cambelt change?

As my membership has expired, I can't see the guide. Do I need to support the engine while I undo the mounting?

Stick a jack under the sump to support the engine and take the mount off.

Mine had the knocking noise in the same gears as you, replaced the upper gearbox mount but realised it wouldn't screw in properly, it was the thread which was buggered so had to get a new butterfly or something like that tapped in cost £150 but now it's fine

Will get mine to someone to have a look see when I can next week, don't own any thing jack like for the car so won't attempt it myself. Will let you know how I get on, will also try to get a video of the noise up
