182 Inner tie / rod end change, advice needed

So after finding out both my front wheels had excessive play and finding the clunk which had shown itself was possibly the passengers ball joint nut being loose after the joint had developed play, i changed both sides outer track rods.

The passengers wheel play left to right improved a lot, however i can still feel some very slight play so im guessing inner tie rod.

The drivers side, still after a new track rod end still has play! it was ridiculous before, but still has some bad movement, Ive tried to see weather my steering rack was lose, but i think its not moving, so i guess its the inner rod still.

Ive read about the tool, is it specifically Renault only? or will most specialist garages have the tool? my drivers side needs doing, and i was thinking £80 fitted, but im reading around £200 in one post ?! I'd change it myself but id need the tool if i can even buy it and i hear its a pig of a job drivers side.

you never get as much movement as there is in your video, stop moving it so hard too, your making it look 10x worse therefore impossible for us to say! LOL

the tool i made myself one

172 cup + 182 cup = dealer only for the inner tie/track rod = £52.72 each (non cup you can get from anywhere for half that price)

Sorry its my extreme strength

Might have been a bit aggressive tbh, was trying harder because the wheel wasnt on.

It moves in and out the inner rod and has a slight metallic sound to it... clang... clang etc.

put your finger on the inner balljoint on the tie rod (inside the steering rack gaitor) and give the hub a wiggle, if you feel any movement - it be fucked

Here you go , i did mine myself relatively easy as i had my engine out
I purchaced genuine renault parts as im in the trade
You know it took renault 4 attemps to get me the
right parts, it was either the length was to long or the thread size was wrong
got their in the end , steering feels spot on now.

Ok will do, need to get someone else to feel whilst i move it.

I need to get a price into my head if possible, what price should i be paying for a drivers side fitted? and if theres not any movement in the inner rod, what the hell else could it be?

Still need to get the belts done and want my stainless exhaust :dapprove:

EDIT: cheers for the pics and info Barnesautos, Thats another thing im worried about, getting the inner rod out and finding its the wrong one! not as easy as other jobs im used to, Ill probably revert to a garage to do the work.

Now that you mention it when i move off sometimes, i get a slight noise, so i guess there could be a problem with the wheel bearing(s)

I forgot to spin the wheel round to hear for noise... but seeing as the brake calipers need a clean up, what do i need to do, remove the calliper and test the disc side to side?

If you get the proper Renault tool for changing them there stupidly easy to change. It is 40 quid though so prob not worth it for doing the job just once, I bought one for the rally car as it means i can do a steering arm changine in about 15-20 mins.

Ah thats good to hear, its probably gone up in price now, although after Christmas if no local mechanic can quote me a fair price for labour ill just buy the tool and fit it myself i think.

Yeah tbh the price of the tool is probably less than you will pay in labour anyway. Can allways sell it on after too.

Quite a bit then! turned out to be my securing nut for the inner tie rod was lose (the one you loosen and tighten to adjust the wheel alignment), the bloke who did my wheel alignment must have not tightened it up enough, im not sure how but after i tightened the nut up, and got my girlfriend to hold the wheel tight there was no movement and the noise had gone when turning corners, I must have been too harsh with the wheel checking moving the steering wheel as well, and the lose alignment nut must have been vibrating on the end track rod.

Thats not good. You might wanna get the alignment re-checked if the track rod securing nut was loose!.

Yeah im gonna have to mate, but think ive got it all sorted now.

The problem i have now found was I was originally moving the wheel too hard so instead of finding anything wrong i was just moving the steering wheel, although i did hear the click when moving the wheel lightly each side, and the track rod ends clicking i knew they needed to be replaced, after they where i had the alignment carried out and tested the drivers wheel again, at this time i didn't know the securing nut was loose so that was the slight noise and i thought this was the inner tie rod as i brute force tested the wheel and disc... the movement was me moving the steering wheel and the noise was the loose nut.

The nut being tightened, and having someone hold the wheel there isn't any movement either side, so another mechanical lesson learnt and some money saved to be put into another car part (fingers crossed).

Haha. Best idea is to only jack up one side. So when you check it for play, theres resistance on the other wheel stopping you from turning the whole rack lol ;)

Assume the 182 cup would be the same as the Trophy? Can you get just the track rod ends from anywhere other than Renault?
