172 Sounds Like a Diesel

  172 (PH2) Silver
Hi I'm new go easy on me ;)

I've had a search on here for this problem, and there seem to be quite a few answers

Basically I bought a 2002 172 today, went on a test drive it was fine and drove beautifully

I got back home though and noticed it sounded like a diesel car when just sat on idle, this was not apparent when I finished the test drive though

I opened the bonnet and the sound is coming from where the cover is (it's not the cover rattling btw)

Basically it just sounds like a diesel when warm, all I'd like to know is what could it be? is it ok to drive still?

Oh and I have no clue about cars (I work in IT)

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the dephaser mate. I had exactly the same problem with mine when I pulled up home after driving it.

cheers mate, sounds like mine! spoke to the buyer and he assured me when he had a basic service the garage said it was nowt to worry about? and he's drove it like it for a bit,

So annoying the car is mint aswell,

some on here seem to be saying it will be ok to drive still and some say don't?

I got mine sorted but I was having the belts done so made sense.

Tbh I'd have to get it done as would do my head in!

Yeh, I think I'll get it done asap, only had it half a day and it's doing my head in, drives superb though! Just need to shift my other car to pay for the work now!

Have you taken it to renault? I thought mine was going (even posted a video of it and everything) so went to renault, and they said that just how the engine sounded. they even started up another 182 for me which sounded exactly the same! Apparently these engine sound quite noisy anyway, so its worth getting a professionsal opinion before getting it done.

Might try and get it over to BTM as thats the closest to me, I'm in Hinckley, Leicestershire,

Don't suppose there is any recommendations around these parts?

Cheers mick, some good pricing there, how much extra is it for the dephaser if your doing the timing belt anyway? on a 172 (2002 Model,Non Cup)

I am also in the Hinckley area, I took my 182 to 519automotive for the belts change, bit of a drive but well worth it, very good level of service and I would recommend.

Cool, I just got quoted £720 by the garage I usually use for what Mick @ Diamond does for £580

Be in touch with Mick as soon as I've sold my BMW

Hello mate, as far as I'm aware there is nowhere in north Yorkshire that is particularly reputable. I got some quotes from queens service station and rs Murray in Leeds and they were both quite expensive (I was getting belts changed at same time). In the end I decided to take the car to Btm performance in Birmingham as they were highly rated and quite a bit cheaper then anyone local. As has been mentioned in this thread, diamond motors are also highly rated as well as birchdown.

When it comes to stuff like this I personally think it's worth travelling to a decent specialist to make sure it's done right.

Ps welcome to the club - another selby owner!

Will do mate. I think diamond motors is a bit closer but it's upto you. I couldn't fault Btm for the work they did on my cup.

That's £580 fully inclusive with no hidden extras. This price will most likely be changing slightly in the new year so if you want to take advantage of the lower price I'd book it this week.

My 172 sounded like a diesel when warm. It sounded like a taxi for a few months. I suspected dephaser. But the oil was overdue so I changed it, and the noise immediately died down! No noise can be heard at all inside the car when stationary, whereas it was very noticeable before! Maybe an oil change is worth a shot.

it's had a brand new oil and filter change.. just trying to sort the cash now for the work
