Ph1 172 revs high or fluctuating when the clutch is engaged/neutral

Hi guys, hopefully you can help.

My revs fluctuate or stay raised once the car is being driven. Stop/start traffic is annoying as it does this. Like the title says, it does it when the clutch is engaged or if I put it in neutral. I've changed the throttle body twice and the throttle position sensor twice.

It had a new genuine cable last year. It had a sticky throttle so that's why I got a second hand TB. I'm now on my 2nd second hand TB but still the same issue. The car has a DIY induction kit on with a breather filter running off the idle control valve. Everything is connected.

Here's a vid which kinda shows it. I do apologise for the stupid accent, I don't actually know why I talked like this!

Thanks, Mark.

Can't see the video @ work, however - could be an air leak of some sort from your description. Have you had the inlet off at any point?

I had it set to private but should be ok now. The inlet has been off but I've had this for a while since the inlet has been refitted. It does seem like a air leak but from where?

As Chris said above its possibly an air leak then,
Lightly spray brake cleaner around the joints between the throttle body all the way through to the lower inlet to see if the revs rise even more, if it does that's the area where you need to re seal.

I'll give that a go. Got a second hand ICV coming to me next week and I'm going to swap mine with a mate today and give it a quick blast to see as well.

It's just annoying and embarrassing in stop start traffic!

I replaced the inlet gaskets and the rubber o ring for the breather on mine when mine wouldn't idle. But turned out to be the ICV.

I've seen them on Renparts eBay page for £35. This is magneti manelli ones. Are they the same as mine says VDO? Don't want to buy a cheap copy and have the same issue!

They look exactly the same, mine was £50 from euro car parts which was a vdo.

Can't remember what my original was!

I know but Alex was saying it'll make minimal difference.

All I did was tighten up the jubilee clip but I dont think it's that that's causing the issue. I may have a look at the pipe going into the back of the inlet for cracks. Not sure what else it could be.

Ok I'm certain it's the idle control valve now. Have taken numerous bits off and swapped them over. At lunch yesterday I decided to remove my icv and clean it again.

Upon inspection I noticed that it doesn't spring back smooth. (tye shaft compresses when the throttle is pressed and releases when the throttle is released.)

Also turned out the the threaded part of the bolt was slightly bent. So I straightened it up slightly, being careful as it doesn't seem that strong, and regreased it all up and put it back together. It's still not perfect (which I think is due the sliding side of things) but so much better. I'll get a new one fitted and confirm once I've bought one.

  A special one.
Good news mate, however a new one from Renault is about £300. [emoji20]

  Phase 1 172
My phase 1 was also having this problem thought it was also air leak or ICV

turned out to be the shaft on the throttle body worn, when the car is revving high try pushing the black part of the thottlebody where the cable sits,if it moves in towards the butterfly and the revs drop. its probably worn the shaft

Throw the second hand parts in the bin, buy new stuff. Your car is 15 years old same as the other TBs.

Pretty sure it's not the throttle body/bodies. I wouldn't throw them away, just in case....

I've fitted the new icv. Idles as it should, drives as it should apart from one time that I put it in neutral when coasting and the revs fluctuated a bit. Maybe the car needs to adjust itself? No horrible 2k revs when stopped though :)

Could be placebo but it seems more responsive on the throttle too.

I have found the cure for my symptoms. Well for now anyway but I've driven from Essex to Gainsborough with no faults so all is good.

The problem was my old gasket on the throttle body/inlet had been broken and was leaking a very small amount of air. i ordered a new gasket from Renault (£2.20p) and scraped of the old one so it was all clean. Fitted and took it for a quick blast. Idle is normal, revs are normal, car feels normal :)

I was under the impression they were no longer made, was it on a shelf and forgotten about for years?

I've never been able to get one.

That's good, I tried getting one a few years back when I built the supercharged one and was no longer available!
