Tappy engine after spark plug change

  e92 330i
Hi all. Done my research and it seems like dephaser is a common problem for a tappy engine.

Ive attached a vid so just after your opinion, changed 4 plugs, 3 seemed ok 1 old one was covered in white chaulky like substance. Odd.

Also the engine has always been low on revs, like under 500 revs even after long (1-2) hour drives when its only idle.

Doesnt seem down on power and its not as noisey as the vid would seem in real life. But ive only noticed it since listening to the engine from doing the plugs.

Well i was only listening out for it once id done them, could have been tappy before just didnt notice.

Ill go tighten them up abit more and report back, cheers!

I've thought this when I recently serviced mine.
I could've sworn it sounded different, but you only really listen to an engine after servicing it, so for all I know it could've been making a similar noise before, and is normal!

Yeah i know what you mean, proberbly is normal. How about the low revs and tbh mpg isnt great, like 30/31 and i dont drive quickly either.

Did you put the right plugs in? If they are to long, they could be hitting the top of the piston (not good). Also didnt think a 2004 1.6 had a dephaser?! is it a vvt engine?

  e92 330i
Yeah got bosch ones from halfrauds the +8 ones. Im not that bad lol.

Hmm im not sure it was the only thing i could find during a search.

Changing the plugs can result in tapping if (1)the plugs are to long, (2) a HT lead is not attached properly to the plug and is arking to the enigne block instead (the engine would probably feel under powered in this intance)

It sounds exactly like my engine, and I've had everything changed in a full service and still sounds the same.

If you do find a solution I want to know, but I wouldn't be worried tbh.

renault engines are tappy at the best of times, so if you are sure the plugs are the right type and the car isnt underpowered, i wouldnt be worried.

Ah ok that puts my mind at rest. I know what you mean ive had a ht lead go before and the car was very underpowered and tractor sounding like.

I guess i never noticed it before.

Thank you all for your help.

Why not put the original plugs back in and see if it cures the problem? For the record, Renault engines, especially the 16v units are not supposed to be "tappy" per say.

Supposed to be, and are, are two different things!

Hmm i will give it ago, you never know. Ones i took out were bosch super 4. New ones where just bosch plus iirc. If it makes a difference..

Yes much better. It shouldnt be that tappy! from your camera movements, it sound like it coming from more the center or right side of the engine. I would definately be getting those new plugs out and puttting the old ones back in to see if it goes away. Also check the new plugs for damage on removal.

They are 100% the ones recomended in the little find your plug catalogue thing. Ill go back n get some ngk if they have them this time!

NGK PFR6E10 - use these and only these. As above, can be had for £25-35 from Ebay and autofactors. Just don't buy them from Renault as they're stupidly over priced (unlike the 225/197 units which are £6 each).

Ok i think i got it. One of my ignition coils is different to the other 3.

One on the left i think is non genuine. The spark plug is also covered is white powder, even the new ones after a day! So new ignition coil? Also the other 3 dont pull out to easy, the other one pulls out very easy.

Only way to tell is pull the coil out with the engine running to see if it makes a difference to the running. Don't pull the multiplied off the coil pull the full coil off the plug as disconnecting the coil can backfeed and blow the ignition driver in the ECM which isn't cheap!

From research it seems ngk bkr6ez are for mine (k4m)

Correct, I made the assumption we were talking about a Sport and went on to auto-type... My bad.

With regards to the coils though, if one doesn't make a difference then that's your problem child. If they all make it run poorly then they're not the issue.

  e92 330i
Hmm i only tried the dodgey looking one, and that made a difference. But if it was a coil then it would be running on 3/ down on power which its not. Engine doesnt seem to be struggling, just low revs on idle..who knows. Cheers for your help.
