Do de cats really enhance performance ?

  ITB 428 Ph1
Hi,

I am looking to purchase a decat but I'm weighing up the pros and cons and I can't make a decision. I own a phase 1 172 and have been told the twin cat coverter I have are very good already compared to the phase 2 single. My cars booked in for a remap at TDF and I don't know wether to fit one before going.

My concern really is the engine management light coming on and obviously failing emissions test.

Will it give me any more power by fitting one and is it really honestly worth the hassle ?

Any tips or advice would be great

The twin barrel cat as you've already pointed out are pretty free flowing anyway. If you dig up some old threads you might see a before and after. Either way theres not a lot of power to be had, especially if your cars standard.

IMO, and this is coming from someone who has one, don't bother. Although if you were dead set on doing it I wouldn't worry about EM light coming on, it rarely ever does on the ph1s

Not worth it tbh, yes they sound mint when they pop and the stench of petrol is great but unless your looking to chase small fractions of performance and time on a track is it really worth is? It's also a pain swapping it over for the MOT and back again and the chance that if you bin the car or get pulled, will end up getting shafted.

Yup get one! :race:

I currently have, 428 cams, matched JMS inlets, cat back ktec exhaust and ITG drop in filter if thus helps ? Plus being mapped soon by TDF

If this helps !

Thankyou for feedback so far !

IMO the decat just sharpens up the throttle response and a little bit more free reving. Wouldn't say that it really gives a noticeable power increase

No.

i certainly didnt find the throttle to be sharper either quite the opposite, the best route is the sports cat IMO

  ph1 172
Definitely did on mine, a standard 182. I had to put the cat back in for a couple of days last week and it wasn't as responsive

Thank you for all the feedback, I have decided to keep my cat on, I feel this is the beat option for me. I believe the decat could possibly gain 2-3bhp along with my other modifications, however the potential of the engine management light coming on and the fact the double cats on the phase 1 are pretty good anyway, this has helped make my decision along with your comments. Also I don't like the thought of my car sounding like the dell boy van with pops and bangs and have flames cone out the back like grease lightning.

However I am trying to get every BHP out of my car I can, especially when it gets remapped, so I may change my mind in the month I have to the remap at TDF

id do it, its not that big of a job every 12 months lol

its a restriction, seeing as you've got cams, you might have a better increase.

All my cammed cars have had decats.

I'd do it looking at your other mods.
You won't get pops and bangs and stuff either. That's only if its mapped to do that.
I have a Yozza 182 Decat, and I get the odd pop at the end of the road when I set off in the morning, thats about it, So no need to worry about that!

Okay you have convinced me, I will purchase the k tec decat pipe and have it fitted by TDF before the remap. I guess I Coukd always purchase a decoder and delete the engine management light if it was to come on.

Thanx for all your comments

TDF are doing a before and after rolling road remap so the map is custom to my car with my mods rather than a generic map

Or when you fit the decat, put a spacer between the lambda sensor and the pipe and hey presto, the light doesn't come on:)

This is what I have and not experienced any problems

De cat does fu@k all on a 172/182

Take the cats out of something like a new skyline gtr and you have an extra 50-60bhp straight away

  ph1 172
It doesn't do f*ck all, have you compared and driven the two back to back?

Agreed, its not a turbo charged car so your no going to gain big horsepower but you gain abit of throttle response/background and a slightly freer reving engine.

A cat is restrictive. Taking it out helps, albeit not as significantly as other cars.

Ah thanx guys, this has really pleased me, I will purchase the spacer, fit a de cat and then let you all know how I get on,
Thanx again

My 182 (remapped, but not pops and bangs map) does pop quite a bit, especially after getting the exhaust hot. I would say 1 out of 5 times lifting off the throttle gives a nice bang. rs192 & decat.

Oh god does it lol, there are so many mixed revues it's hard to really say yes or no, therefore I will try it and if indont like it I can always put the cat back on, camracing spacers are £15 and eBay £4 is there any difference in quality ?

Mine Yozza pops when cold, and once hot only pops every blue moon.

WTF? Whats that for? so his sensor doesnt read properly?

If the car has only 1 sensor you WILL NOT get a warning light. The reason later cars get the light is the 2nd sensor is telling the ecu the cat isnt working. Non EOBD cars dont have 2nd sensor so just fit the decat and you wont get a problem. Fiddling with the first sensor wil cause problems

My opinion ..... Pointless on a phase 1 172 it gave mine shite flat spots all over the place, was an arse ache to change and a pain to get insured. Better still car now pulls stronger with cat back on.

I remember my Lamba sensor was on it's way out before, the engine management light came on and my car would not go past 2000 rpm, I think that's why I am so worried about the sensor, is back pressure important on a car ? As I know on a bike it can't be too free flowing otherwise it can effect performance.

  Audi A5
When I put my cat back on the engine seemed to build up revs quicker i think this was due to the back pressure from the cat. Saying that with the mods you got I would get a decat before the remap

  ITB 428 Ph1
Ah okay thanx buddy, there are so many mixed revues on the decat it makes it difficult to make a certain conclusion, I am trying to gain a little but don't want to cause problems for myself. After speaking to TDF and BTM I believe there is very little to be had considering I have a good twin cat and if I have my heart set on a decat then the engine msnagement light is something I will have to accept and get on with if it was to come on, obviously the light can be deleted with a code reader. I will have a decat fitted before the decat, if I don't get on with it, I can always put the cat back on. I believe everyone's experiences are different and I appreciate all the feedback I have received.

sounds great, smells great, and personally i think it feels better and feels smoother, not to sure on performance wise but definatley feels more free running

Just had another look at the spacers again on kam racing and eBay, I will obviously need a male threaded end on the spacer to screw into the hole on the decat pipe, then a female the other end of the decat pipe to allow the sensor to be screwed into it. The spacers I have been looking at are just female ends, so how does it screw into the hole on the decat pipe ?

I did find a spacer that has a male and a female but it is a 90 degrees angled spacer, would this make any difference? Would it still fit ?
