172 Cup Racecar.

Cheers, not following any wiring diagrams at all. Before I took the loom out I just labelled every plug/wire in the car and things like sterio/boot loom/airbag wiring+pretensioners etc etc can go. Anything to do with the clocks/lights/stalks/engine are all being left, just being careful to trace every wire to where they go before I cut them incase they run to something important! lol

Ah ok. It was just knowing renault wiring, colour schemes tend to change for live, earths etc, so I was wondering how you did it. it would be good to get a full car wiring diagram, but i've been struggling to find one (free ;)). I tried downloading a version of tolerance but that didn't work, so i'm still searching.
Are you planning on scrapping the OE ECU?

Jonny

Looks great to me!! Cant wait to see pics of this climbing frame you're having built lol ...

Lol same here Dave! Hours of fun climbing through it all ;)

Yeah James (JMS) said to trace every single wire as they may change somewhere!

I'm going to utilise the standard ecu, seeing as the RS-2 was designed with using it and me not wanting any more power with regards to lairy cams or anything else like that (therefore needing aftermarket management) plus there isnt many clio racecars that I know of that use a standard ecu. Also using the standard ecu shaves a good £2,000+ off the build of the car itself, which could be used towards racing or more important things like fibreglass bodypanels! :)

yep, renault have a habit of changing wiring mid lenght (gigitty ;)). Bloody french

Sensible option on the build then mate. Fibre glass panels would be good, but surely you'll only do the bonnet and tailgate? Or doors also? It would be interesting to know how much difference a cut door weighs over a fibreglass one.

It's something I'd like but will wait for a while, what I'm going to do is cut out lots of the metal work like the doors and boot. The doors really surprised me with how heavy they are so with a bit of chopping about and polycarbs I can save a good bit of weight there!

To be honest you won't lose an awful lot from the doors as the material weighs sod all but it all helps. Polycarbs all the way as well.

Can't wait to see this Nick! Great to see the Cup goes this way!

Got me thinking about racing now.

Tom thats harsh man. Im all for gaining an advantage over the opposition but weighing Nicks car in?? That low!

How much did we get? ;)

So another little update, cars been at the fabricators now for only 2 days and a fair chunk of work has already been done! Went down there to talk to chap about various things he wanted to change for the better, me being me and seeing lots of cars on here with gussets and the A/B pillars and box section on the door bar cross' I asked for them as I thought they were benefitial. However he said with a complete build from scratch there is no need. Heres a few pictures to see what I mean...

He's built it so that the A/B pillar parts of the cage sit against the pillars themselves and then welded so gussets weren't needed. With regards to the box section put in on the door bars, again completely pointless as in his eyes are only there to be asthestically pleasing. So all in all, weight saved by not having extra metal implemented and still as strong, if not stronger, than other cages.

Cant wait for it to be finished, not long left! :)

Cheers

So about this good (epic ;)) update!

Mike at Edwards Motorsport called me up on yesterday to say that he'd finished the cage, pretty impressive that in 4 days with lots of other cars he's knocked this up! Very impressed with the quality and hows its turned out, anyway some pictures! :)

As some people know but everyone, i've been looking for a partner to race with as doing it by myself as much as I could stretch to doing it would crucify me financially and racing isn't worth every penny! So after speaking to Chris on here (recaro182), he's agreed to join the team and go racing together. :) We have been looking at various options suspensionwise as my current FK setup will not be up to the task at all and even Chris' AST's would need setting up for 'race' rather than a trackday setup, then these turned up....

Pretty much the full Bilstein coilover setup off of an original Mk2 Clio Cup Racer, with strengthened hubs/solid top mounts with bearings and strut brace that all tie in together. Now given how much they were new we decided for price it was definately worth the money, even if we have to adapt drivewise to the suspension it would be better than our setups. All thats needed in the bearings for the hubs, we've been told that Laguna bearings fit in the hubs and the 172 Cup driveshafts will fit then as there's no pickups for the ABS/Traction control like all the other Mk2 Sports. Either way we're going to pursue to get these to fit regardless and learn to do drive on them, then fingers crossed this should give us a better chance of competing.

The car will be going into the bodyshop in the next couple of days, just have to do a bit more prep work then she'll be ready to be painted inside and have the roof repaired/painted.

Hope you like, pretty epic update to me! :)

Cheers

i've got the Erics bearing number for those bottom arms, they're better bearings than the renault sport ones and about £20 cheaper. also, GSF will do the bearings for the hubs no worries. i've replaced mine a few times.

good luck getting this lot to work and achieve what you want it too.

You have a Pm.

Well bugger me.

Full on hero suspension.

Im off to the bathroom. BRB.

Lol!

Sat 9th july for testing/shakedown at Bedford nick? Team Failsport will be in attendance to do some pre-winter testing iirc ...

Lol. So yourself is going to Bedford? ;) Will you have the TroFail fixed in time?

Not sure on whether we'll be there tbh, after Chris was sent a pm from Timmyevo6 on here about various other things that weren't said that might affect the fitting of the suspension itself. We'll have to see how it goes, we were just told about the bearings for the hubs that needed sorting and whether the driveshafts would fit however there is other problems we may encounter such as...

"from memory, the main issue is the hub, drive shaft clearance and then the fact the fronts are shorter because the subframe on the racer is modified considerably compared to OEM to allow the entire car to sit lower while maintaining correct bump steer and so on. lowering a OEM car to the same level will upset the handling and cause issues.

So as said we'll how it goes, tbh i've already seen a Mk2 on the full Cup Racer suspension setup at a Snetterton trackday I did last year. That car had lots of tweeks such as a 197 engine on ITB's with the 197 gearbox also, and he was flying round corners far quicker than any other clio on the day! Just a shame he's not on the forum... :(

What an update, very jealous but pleased for you. This is going to be some machine indeed!

Looking forward to the next update. What are you going to do on the next update to beat that, you putting an F1 engine in it?
