Is 60k really high miles?

  Saxo VTS
Just been browsing on Pistonheads and looking at 172's between £4k & £5k and there are a few dotted around but all seem to be 60k>

Is that really high miles though? Considering a few of these are now 6 year old cars I'd say 60k is average more than anything else. Surely the car will be nice and loose with stuff like cambelt done.

Or is that too near 100k for some? :D

60k high? lol that's not 'high' :)

It's generally taken that the average milage per year people do is 12k.

My 1.2 16v is on 58,800ish and im starting to think I should get rid before 60k. 58k sounds so much better than 60k.
Mechanically its nicely run in and revs freely, has bags more life left in it and doesn't burn any oil, I just think when people see over 60k they start to worry.

If its been well serviced and looked after then should have no probs. My old gti-6 had 70k on an R plate when I bought it last year, was an owners club car, well looked after, no expense spared car. Ran like a dream for the 3k miles i had it.

For a French car yes

What!?! The engines are great. Yeah some rattles and standard problems but come on. Seen Willys do well over 150k.

Might be poor build quality at times but 70k is nowt on a modern engine.

55k on an '03 plate and mine is as good as ever.

Spared no expense on it, FRSH every 12 months to get the book stamped + specialist doing interim oil+filter every 6 months.

Like said earlier, owners club cars are usually meticulously looked after.:approve:

I think I've just commited to keeping mine for another year....

for some cars mileage is just a number. my mums car is an 02 plate on about 15k and its a shed, whereas mine is on 62k and running better than ever. *touch wood*

After some kind soul fitted your springs and dampers ;)
Stella was tasty too, thanking you!

Mines on 51k 2001. I'll probably never see it again though, lol

thanks for a great job matey, i just havent got the energy to do anything to it. but its seriously fun to drive at the mo with the back end on its softest most fun setting.

your car will turn up one day, if you can remember what it still looks like :clown:

Just what I wanted to hear :D

Mk2 172 it is then.

One sold local for £4100. FSH, recent cambelt in black 64k miles :(

My mate has a Megane company car and in the 8 months he has been buzzing about in it he has done 55k. And it's still good.

What a load of crap

My 52 plate mk2 172 is now on just under 73K and the engine is running better than ever :approve:

Same as me. (71k)

However the engine maybe fine, but I have just had to change both rear springs and one damper. (went cup all round)

I have just had a new UCH unit.

Also my car needs top mounts and some work on the steering rack.
Also its developed a whine on one of the belt tensioners.

I shall blitz all the above when it goes for its 72k service. ££££££££

Mines a 2002 plate and had 62K when I bought last year.
It takes me on my 50 mile trip to work everyday and 90% of that trip is done on dual carridgeway in one gear.

Got 83K on now, timing belt done, engine is still running nice (bar lumpy idle) and not a leak in sight.

I would expect a solid 2.0l lump to be good for 150K at least as they are not too far behind diesel engines these days. It will be the auxilliary parts that need replacing first.

Just keep it well serviced as it gets older, kind of like your gran

72K is a good time to modify. New springs and shocks, belts done, exhaust will be getting near its end, pads due for a change. etc.

tbh I'd rather buy a car thats done 72k and had the cambelt done than 60k and needs it doing.
Service history is what you need. 60k and a full service history, no problems.
Infact a well looked after 100k miles engine is nowhere near the end of it's life but it is just one of those perceptions that some people have when a car reaches 100k.
My dads merc was on 110k when he sold it, still on the origional brakes and clutch!!!

mines coming up 4 years old in sep and ive just got 18k on the clock :) should a 48k i want it to last forever

  Scirocco GT 210
As said, 60k miles isn't too much for the engine, especially if it's been serviced correctly, it'll be fine. However, it's the rest of the car I'd worry about....

Yeah the engine is running great, but i've had to change a few parts in the last year.

Two new driveshafts
Brake pads and discs
Cambelt
And just had the 72K service.

I'm happy with it though, except for the creaky drivers seat :dapprove:
