While we’re on the subject of hot hatches, a mate of mine had this for a while, may still have it tbh.

It was a genuine 400+bhp rally car built just before group b was banned so never made it to a race. Eventually they punted it off to a someone and it lived in a barn for a long time before he eventually got it. Not sure it ever really moved. V5 shows as issued in 22 so he may have moved it on. It also suggests we’re long overdue a pint

Now this is a controversial opinion but do 6R4s, clio V6, Maxi Turbos, T16s and the VW Golf W12 belong in the Hot hatch Category?

Because now they are technically rear wheel drive mid engined cars?

I know it's a classic 'no true Scotsman' argument, but IMHO hot hatches have to be fun, practical, compact and affordable.

If you've got no back seats, no boot and/or cost as much as something like an M3, you're more hot-hatch adjacent than a real hot-hatch.

The Renault 5 Turbo was mid-engine RWD, while the Renault 5 GT Turbo is FF.

So one is a hot hatch and the other a homologation special?

As someone has said once they are entering the market new above 30k they are into a grey area.

I believe the last Megane Trophy R was nearer 40k maybe even beyond that once spec’d

I'd want to add in the requirement for four seats and 'fun', rather than just 'fast'.

IMHO there's lots of stuff (Golf Clubsport S, R26.R, £75k RS3) that ticks the box of "fast with a hatchback", but not really the spirit of a hot hatch.

I'd be happy with AWD if it's still a decent drive as opposed to a too-much-grip bore fest.

I'm amazed no one has posted a Ph1 172 yet, when it came out it was huge step forward for the hot hatch world in terms of power and spec.

Next up would have to be a 309 GTi, basically a better 205 GTi (although worse looking I will admit).

Granddaddy of all french hot hatches, I give you the Peugeot 104ZS, tiny terror from the 70s.
Sold in teaspoonfuls in the UK, mine even had electric windows.

We drove a 104GL over the Pyrenees for a family holiday in Spain in 1978. Really lusted after the 104ZS - one of my first brochures nicked from a showroom. I can't believe nobody has mentioned this or at least I haven't seen it:

This needs buying to put in the museum especially if it only makes it’s estimate - 35000 miles and only 2 owners -

I had one new - very noisy on the motorway with the Remus on but that won’t matter if it’s only tuck up in the garage

Love reading this.

Wasn’t there a thread recently with a load of people bumming the Fiat Punto HGT and that has not had a mention here. I had a mk1 Punto GT which was not as good as the R5 GTT for handling or tuning but I still loved mine back in the day and wanted to mention it.

A fair few cars mentioned here that don’t fit into the hot hatch category but it’s great to see them and hear about them again nevertheless 👍

If I only won the euro millions this could be made a reality.

Would be a Mecca for blokes in their 40s, 50s and 60s to come relive their youth.

Would for sure would have to have an arcade inside with old school racing games.

If we're discussing road cars then surely the brief has to be a fast version of your mums shopping car, but for a hot hatch museum a room full of the extreme end of hatchback evolution into motorsprt has to be included imo.

I suppose I should add one of these to the mix too.
