Top mount spinning freely with engine off

Hi!

I've recently changed the top mounts (rubber doughnut, bearing etc from febi) while changing springs and one of the top mounts now spins freely.

The car also makes a grinding noise from the front right strut when making a left turn.

It looks like it's just spinning the whole from piston with it. The other top mount isn't moving at all, only when turning the steering wheel (as it should).

Time for new front shocks?

Just to make sure, it's not spinning on the thread, the whole piston of the shock is spinning. It doesn't do that on the left side.

And with tighten it, do you mean do it up till the rubber is touching the bodywork?

Make sure the 17mm nut underneath is fully tight first. Then either with an impact gun or Allan key and swan neck 21mm spanner tighten the top up until you can't anymore.

If you just use a 21mm socket on a ratchet you'll never get it tight enough.

There you go, I couldn't find out why it just stared moving all of a sudden.

The 17mm nut underneath had indeed come loose.

Thanks for the quick replies!

For anyone viewing this in the future, the grinding noise in left turns turned out to be non related. That was a piece of loose plastic in the wheel well rubbing against the wheel. Doh..
