So after 2 years of driving about in my boring runabout to afford buying my house, I finally had enough money to step into something fun again.

As much as I loved my 182, I fancied trying something different. I considered a lot of cars and in the end decided on a Mini Cooper S. Initially I was looking at the later Turbo Charged (R56 model) until I'd read up on the engine coking issues. So I set out looking for a facelift R53 with the shorter gear ratios. This car wasn't for sale, but after seeing Daryl on here mention it might be going up soon I messaged him to enquire about it.

Fast forward to Saturday, I jumped on the train from Leeds to Bristol and agreed to buy. I smiled the whole 4 hour drive home! The short ratio gearbox is so much fun.

    The car:
    54 Plate Mini Cooper S.
    67,000 Miles with FSH.
Full leather interior, Xenons, Climate control, Body coloured roof & mirrors, lowered 30mm on Eibach Pro lines, aero skirts & grille.

Absolutely love it! Here are some photos after I'd given it a very quick clean.

At the moment it's plenty quick enough for me coming from my 1.4 Polo, so my plans are a set of plain number plates and a general clean & tidy up!

Not a fan of these on any level but those springs really bring it out strangely. Lovely example

Strange been looking at these myself at moment, yours is how if like mine but with black wheels.

How easy are these to tune then is it a lot cheaper than the the 1*2?

If you don't mind me asking how much does he insurance compare to the 182?

A lot easier to tune mate yes. For example, 200bhp can be seen for £300 with a reduced pulley!

I'm not sure how it compares exactly as I haven't had a 182 for a few years, but I found it very reasonable. Got a great price from Adrian Flux.

Wonder if these will drop even more in price once the F56 comes out in November?

Been looking at them recently, but am holding out until then.

Normally i only like the jcw/GP Mini's but i really don't mind that.

I gather those are tyres and not run-shats?

I'd highly recommend you try one. They're as fun as a 182, just more refined & better built!

Plus the charger whine is addictive

Really really like that, only thing I'm not a fan of is those seats.. they look a little lack-lustre for the car they're in?

Cheers mate. The seats are the best available from the standard range, I actually really like them. Supportive and comfortable!

£3000 worth of JCW Recaros would be lovely don't get me wrong.

Knowsit. Since I've gone BMW, baller spec seats are a necessity. They don't look bad, just not up to the rest of the car if you know what I mean?

The full leather ones in this are 100x better looking and much more comfortable than the standard seats.

The standard half leather/half colored fabric seats are shat lol.

Not really no, no cambelt to worry about and servicing is fairly simple.

The gearbox's are quite tough and you'd have to be pretty unlucky to suffer a charger failure. Although there's plenty of 2nd hand units on the market now.

200bhp doesn't demand that much wonga tbh. Combined with the facelift gearbox, I can imagine it would be a pretty epic drive!

Lovely looking car!! Fyi, mine went from 163-200bhp (Dyno Dynamics rollers) with just a GRS intercooler, Dave F airbox & 15% pulley. R56S front brakes are a must with that power though!!

Cheers mate. I've been down to mad4mini in Leeds this weekend and had a word with them about the reduced pulleys etc. Sounds like a must have mod in the near future. At the moment there's plenty of power for me coming from my runabout, so I'll probably go for it when it starts to feel normal!

    Cheers guys!

It's a very tidy car, as are all of Daz's tbh. The springs improved the stance so much, even when we rolled it out the workshop just after fitting them!

    Update.

I took the car to Mad4Mini in Leeds on Friday for them to have a quick look over the car and also have a look at a blow from the exhaust area. Turns out there was a crack in the manifold so I had them fit a new one. To my surprise the car drives much nicer now and is a lot more responsive. The guys at Mad4Mini said the car was absolutely spot on, and one of the cleanest R53s they’d seen in a while. No other issues to report – happy days!

As part of the tidying up I have planned, I wanted to get rid of some of the shine in the leather seats and bring back more of the natural matt finish. I had a go with some of Zymol’s leather cleaner after reading online and I’m very pleased with the results.

    9596058829_f0b9cf2c7e_c.jpg

    9598851282_7a364191a4_c.jpg

As you can see, compared to the photo on the first page they’re loads better. Almost as good as new.

I then went to Leeds Festival.

    9596059157_d5dee5d632_c.jpg

    Sorted.

    9596075397_e3cd89f297_c.jpg

After putting a good few miles in I’m absolutely loving the car. So much fun to drive.

    Good work.

It was bloody awful. I even tried to get my mum to lend me her car so I didn't cover the Mini. She saw right through my plan LOL.

Cheers mate, chuffed with how they came out. Didn't expect to see that much difference tbh.

Power is on the cards yes but not quite yet. I'm still loving it as it is due to my previous car, still feels quick to me. As it starts to wear off however... :race:

I will say though that it feels just as quick as I remember my 182 being and possibly more. However that may be down to the way the supercharger delivers the power. Love the way this thing picks up!

Interesting reading this. Then other halfs Golf Diesel has expired. She is also starting a new job soon with barely any miles and in the same direction as me.

She was originally looking at Diesel Mini's due to mileage however now we may as well go for the Cooper S. Should make me look a bit less gay when I am smashing around in the Fag box

We will be looking at a R53 I suspect for the budget we want. Seems to be a lot around.
