My Brother - Video Games Artist

  Evo 5 RS
Yeah, you have to wonder if we're the ones who have got it all wrong! Oh well, good luck to him I say! :)

Looks good. I take it she's looking to get into the games industry or a similar field?
@Silent_Scone is into CryEngine because he's a graphics wh**e and one of only about 3 people capable of running the engine at maximum detail settings / resolution at interactive frame rates on his home PC... :p And no, I'm not jealous. No siree. Not one bit.

EDIT: @Sir_Dave, any links to more of Matt's work?

Being able to look at rendering in realtime is so much better :D:p

Not sure he has permission for all of his work to be in the public domain atm, but there's a few bits & bobs on his website/facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/trevelyan.art
http://www.trevelyans.com/

Genuinely love it! Where does he even start with projects like that?

From my understanding, with the Severalls piece, he started with one photo, then the rest of it was pure imagination, so the sort of thing that you do with your drawings i guess. He's always been fairly arty i guess, i always thought he was a bit of a donut when we were growing up lol, how wrong could i be

@Sir_Dave, do you know how your brother got into this and if his company offer training schemes/apprenticeships?

not for myself though.

He basically started tinkering back when the original Call of Duty came out, designed a level, uploaded it, many people played. Took a year out prior to Uni & tinkered some more, then Portsmouth Uni started doing a Degree in computer game design (or similar) which he signed up to, followed by a Masters in the same sort of thing. After that, the CV's went out & he got the job with TT Fusion (What was Traveller's Tales years ago) to do all the Lego stuff. Then when a load of people left to set up Foundry42 for Star Citizen, then asked him to join as well.

He works blooming hard and is always in the office working, but at the end of the day, he loves what he does/its his hobby, so he's got fairly handy at it. Bit like if i had a job related to BMW's/Clio's i guess!!

Yea, she wants to get into the scenery design side of it, after posting that earlier i looked up some of her more recent work, i thought her original bioshock inspired piece was good, but her later stuff has come on leaps and bounds.

Scenery is what Matt did a lot of with the Lego games iirc, his contact details are on his website if she wanted any pointers i guess.

Brilliant.

I backed Star Citizen, can't wait for it to be finished

Apparently if you send them beer it helps with the design process - they get loads from backers iirc.

Little update on my Bro as he started his new job at Naughty Dog in Santa Monica in March - they are owned by Sony and do fairly well known titles such as "The Last of Us" and "Uncharted", for the older generation, they also did Crash Bandicoot 😂 I'm well chuffed for him as i remember playing the Zombie game with him when it first came out in 2013 and him saying "Yup, one day i will work for these guys!!" ... He's now an environment & texture shader artist for them, whatever the f*ck that is lol.

Few cool things here: https://www.artstation.com/artist/trevelyan

Little update on my Bro...
That's awesome
I really, REALLY miss working in the games industry and would dearly love to go back into game development (well, graphics technology for games). Maybe one day. If I can find a company that pays well enough!

EDIT: Please kindly ask him to send me some Zbrush files so that I can 'test' my renderer... :p

My daughter wants to work in games graphics, I'll send her those links to have a look at. Your brother must be made up getting a job over there. What sort of qualifications has he got?

What sort of field is she looking to focus on mate? 3D modelling and animation? Concept design? Environment design? Just curious :)

Female so plans change daily! Character of environment design would suit her imo. I'm genuinely baffled as to where her art skills come from as me and the Mrs can't draw for s**t[emoji38]. She did some manga characters at school and they were fantastic.

I guess there has to be an understanding and expectation that a lot of your work doing that, will simply be 'forgotten'? I know there are some games where you vividly remember a scene or a particular level - but how many rooms, corridors and environments do you pass through and not recall a jot? Even the epic backdrops of the likes of Witcher 3 are amazing to look at - but I bet the majority of gamers have little understanding or appreciation of just how much work, effort and time has gone into them.

Not saying it's a thankless task - far from it! But you could spend week, if not months retouching an environment that players might spend 26 seconds in.

People in the games industry tend to do it for the love and enjoyment (as well as providing an income). The fact that your [as a developer / artist] little bit of the project only contributes to a small part of the larger picture doesn't tend to be a concern, at least not in my experience. The complexities and sheer amount of work that goes into a game makes it incredibly difficult for an individual's contributions to stand out; even more so given the high levels of artistic and technical ability typically found within a game dev studio. The reward is in getting something to market and having made a worthy contribution to the product. Having your name in the credits is great  Assuming the game doesn't bomb... :tongueout:

As you've suggested, it's often difficult for people (gamers included) outside of game dev to really appreciate just how much blood, sweat and tears goes into making a game. It's not an easy industry to get into nowadays and it's still as volatile as ever. Yet it can be incredibly rewarding. Whilst @Sir_Dave's brother has done really well for himself (long may it continue) he's very much an exception. Unless you can make it to one of the few big and successful dev studios then you won't be bringing home anywhere near six-figure salaries. Often portrayed as a somewhat glamorous and privileged industry to be in, the harsh reality can be quite eye-opening!

Sorry, didn't see this before. He's just done a little piece on exactly that as it happens!
https://80.lv/articles/building-environments-for-uncharted-the-lost-legacy/ - some really geeky stuff in there as well.
Matt's been working at Naughty Dog for a good 6 months now, so he's been able to put some of his work on "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy" and "The Last of Us Part II" on his Artstation page. As ever, i think its pretty awesome lol: https://www.artstation.com/trevelyan

Havent updated this in a little while, mostly as most of Matt's stuff is embargoed at the moment, but he's doing all the vehicles for this "fairly well known" title atm:

Also did the "burning car" theme they launched for PS4 just before Christmas.

Lives in a flat by the beach in Santa Monica these day. Jealous much ?
