M100CUP - RB 182 Sprint and Hillclimb Car

Bristol Pegasus MC - Castle Combe Track and Tuition Day (Aug 2018)

This is probably my favourite track day - its really well organised and a great circuit. Its not 'Open Pit Lane' so it may not be everyone's cup of tea... but I love the variety of cars and the friendly club atmosphere. This year they were down on entries (only 45 cars) - so sadly the club would have made a loss. Its a great pity that its not better supported.

Video of one of the track sessions: entitled 'more minis than the Italian Job' -

Things of note in the video -

The Cummins Railton can be seem bounding back into the paddock at 30 secs in to the video;
The minis were from the 'Mini Cooper Register' - really smart cars and quite quick in the wet;
The track was a bit slippy and greasy - I could stick with the 911 GTS tough the wiggly bits but it was just sooooo fast on the straights;
The Megane looked beautiful and I loved the registration number.
I do like seeing a variety of cars on the track - so some quick photos from the day:

2) Renault Megane Trophy

Next Event - Five Clubs Hillclimb at Wiscombe Park, Honiton - Sat 1st Sept and Sunday 2nd Sept.

you need to break that little finger habit on the wheel graham else its going to kick back and break your little pinkie! ☝

Yes, I know...

I lost the use of my little finger and ring finger about 6 years ago and got into the habit of holding the steering wheel on the spoke. After some very clever surgery to reroute the nerves I now have some feeling back in those two fingers. The legacy is that those two fingers still have a mind of their own .....

Car looked good at wis on Sunday ?

Thanks @JackJack ……… were you competing? spectating?

Wiscombe Park - 1st / 2nd September 2018

I haven't competed much at Wiscombe Park this year so this was a little bit like a reunion with the hill. Great venue, well organised …. and good weather. Lots of old friends there and a great meal on Saturday evening with the 'Top of the Hill' club at 'The Holt', in Honiton. Really good food and wine.

The car behaved very well and I was in the 47 second mark on both days. I am impressed by the new tyres (Interstate Race DNRT - soft compound) - my personal best at Wiscombe is 47.2 seconds which was set on Extreme VR2 (R5 compound) and I managed to get within 2 tenths of that time on the new tyres. The bonus of course is that the Interstates are £160 cheaper. I can live with being a tad slower and a bit richer......

Video of a timed run on Sunday -

Good to see quite a lot of spectators at this event …..

Good Video of Wiscombe from the weekend -

I also came across this video on YouTube - the first few minutes show you what a spectacular setting Wiscombe Park is for Motorsort and then its a sample of the action. M100CUP can be seen at 6:16 into the video … quickly followed by John Hill in his Clio 172 [ @hilly26 ]. I think Marc Morris is in there also?

Overall - a great weekend of fun.

Your car always looks so fresh Graham. Even before, during and after the events!

Just out of interest, I know you mentioned about having the rear seats in for hillclimbs with a cage, but isn't the harness mounts at the wrong angle? Can a harness bar not be fitted?

Apologies if this has been covered.

Yes - a harness bar would make things a lot simpler :)

The harnesses have new mounts where the back of the rear seat meets the base (if that makes sense) - not ideal as the harnesses are at about a 35 degree angle.

Can you see what I mean in the photo below?

I think sprinting is hard, hill climbs seem a different level!

So much commitment. ?

Hi Tom ..... you should come down and give it a go ...... Wiscombe is like an 8 hour picnic at a stately home, with the odd bit of fun on the driveway. Camping available in the top paddock to keep the cost down ...nice catering and a beer tent ..... entry fee £70 per day.

Funnily enough I just googled Wiscombe to see how far away it is.

It's 4 hours from home so a bit of a distance however it looks like a great event I'll try and get to one next year, will also help if my mate with a camper van comes, for obvious reasons!

Do you attend any other event further East?

Graham, or any other person who knows! I am not sure but for modified production can I fit top mounts to my suspension to allow me to change the toe and camber? Im not 100% sure reading the book, does it still count as the same type of suspension? surely it does.

No problem fitting top mounts in 'ModProd'.

ModProd is very open regarding suspension changes ... as long as it's safe.

Mutley Mayhem Sprint - 8th Oct 2018

Last sprint of the season - where has the summer gone? Sunday 8th Oct was a really bright, chilly day and a reminder that we are already into Autumn now. The event was organised by Bournemouth and District Motor Club …. and as always it was great fun.

My times were not particularly good but I finished mid table in class so I am happy. Three timed competition runs all in the 86 and a bit seconds.

Video of one of the morning runs in glorious autumn sunshine.

Some snaps from the sprint (all photos courtesy of Chris Coope - full album of 262 photos on Facebook)

First time I've used a sun visor in competition.

Dave G - Winner of my class in his Supercharged Elise. Really well prepared car.

So thats it for 2018 - a quiet season with only 2 hillclimb weekends and 5 sprint events. On the plus side I've managed a few track days as well this year.

I'm now in a dilemma - I've had the car for nearly 3 years and its been brilliant fun. But do I spend some money on updating the car and still not be really competitive in class - or do I sell it and buy something turbocharged with 4 wheel drive ?

me 6.jpg

PS - if anyone reading this is in the south west and would like details of next years ASWMC championship events then let me know and I will forward them on as soon as they are published in the new year. As a championship I really recommend it - great variety of events and a friendly bunch.

Yes please. I am looking at getting into this ready for next year so am slowly trying to build the clio. Interested to know how the tyres are getting on too

I'll forward on the details of the 2019 championship as soon as they are published.

The 2019 MSA tyre lists are usually published in early November ..... I don't expect my Race DNRT to be on the list as the manufacturing company in Taiwan has gone bust. The ASWMC Championship allows list 1A and List 1B tyres - I will send you the new tyre list when it is published.

On a positive note: Extreme have a full wet List 1B tyre available next year - known as the VR3.

Looks like the VR3 are not listed, just VR1 & VR2. The Race DNRT are showing too

Hi .... yes .... The vr3 position seems strange as they were announced as MSA listed a few months ago.

Hope this link works for my thoughts on this year's tyre list.

I will also send you a link to the 2019 ASWMC events when they are published :)

  172 Cup
Such a great read and have a 2019 bump on me. Interesting facts on it too and a genuine insight. Taking my first foray into sprint and hillclimbs this year in my Megane some 20 years after my father stopped (he's relegated himself to paddock crew now he's 69) hopefully try take on some Mitsubishi Taxis..

Keep up the good work hopefully see you on a hill if I venture far enough south.

So are you racing the clio again this year or have you bought something else ?

Good question!

I still have the Clio but I'm seriously thinking of changing it. The only work I've had done to the Clio over the winter -

1) New TPS sensor on the Jenveys. The old sensor had developed a dead spot which made the car 'interesting' to drive;
2) Looking at ways of reducing the weight of the car and still be 'road going' class as defined in the Blue Book (bit of fibreglass?);
3) Tweaked the gear linkage on the PMS Shifter (big improvement).

Change of championship for me this year - I've entered the DEWS Championship for 2019 which has a '2 litre Road Going' class. This means I wont be giving away 150 bhp :) Most of the venues are the same as last year (Castle, Wiscombe, Clay, Llandow, Castle Combe, etc) but it also includes some of the premier venues like Gurston, Shelsley, Prescott, Doune, etc

So if you know someone who wants a Clio 182 and has a big bag of money …..

The new class is that 2 litre n/a or anything 2 litre ?

If it's 2 litre n/a surely it's got to be worth doing the season in the car you know inside out especially as your not going to be giving away those 150 bhp.

Anyway whatever you end up with i look forward to reading about it .

Usually anything turbocharged gets a multiplier, IIRC it’s 1.4 down here. So 2.0N/A or a 1.4 Turbo. Assuming the class hasn’t got a specific N/A restriction.

The normal class is 1.8-2.6 so 1.8Ts just fit in, so you end up against silly stuff sometimes. 450bhp A3s vs 130bhp MX5 FTL.

On that vein, is there an MX5 class in that championship @GrahamV182 ?

It was reasonably short last year, but for me in the Mazda it was completely flat, although it wasn’t an easy flat as most people were lifting for the chicane. Sadly I forgot my GoPro when I did it last year so didn’t get any footage!

Oh the sprint in May!!
I am attending one of the track days at Llandow with one of the lads who is in the DEWS club, not sure which one it is, to give him a hand with his car.
He’s a Renault fanboy but the mini bug has bitten him since being in the club so he bought a ex mini seven race car and is just having a new lump built that should see him around the 140bhp mark!!!

I’ve went from being a mini guy for the last 10 years. Still have two minis but the Clio bug has bitten me.
