A bit of progress made.

In a bit of a rush to have a play at Bedford I made a rookie mistake and didn’t really have all the mechanicals double checked. I managed only 5 laps around Bedford and on the second bit of the main straight the clutch decided it didn’t wanna play anymore. That was the end of that and I had to get RAC to taxi it home.
My original plan was to have a second gearbox that I have to be rebuilt with a Quaife LSD but due to the time of year and X’mas looming I’ve had to put that plan to the back burner. In the mean time I’ve had the complete clutch replaced with OE for now.
I took a detour whilst working last week and went to GSM in Nottingham. Oops I couldn’t resist and I had a little spend.
Reading up on the forum and seeing what people do, I really wasn’t looking forward to removing the sound deadening. But how shocked was I when I removed all the carpets and my 172 is naked. What a relief. It seems 172 cups have none? Any ways had a bit of a father and son bonding day yesterday and got round to fitting all my new bits and pieces.

Silverstone on the 5th November I can’t wait to have another play.

A bit of track action. You can hear me giggle after I went off at 6.14.

Looks good - but Silverstone must be one of the boring of tracks we have in this country. I'm not even a fan of watching racing on TV around there.

I've never driven on it myself, but with an elevation change of what appears to be 2ft - it pales compared to the great tracks of Oulton, Donington, Knockhill and certainly Cadwell Park.

I certainly won’t disagree that Silverstone is a bit boring. But it’s a track I’d never driven before so it has to be done for nostalgia reasons. It is still quite a challenge to remember all the turns (old age problems). Next year I’ll be getting to as many different tracks around the country as I can. Cadwell is is defo on the hit list. I’ll be doing Donnie a few times as that is my favourite.

nice progress, Cadwell is simply sublime. Donny is good, Oulton is outstanding.....Cadwell in a Clio is just poetry imo

Sorry for the late welcome mate but welcome aboard.

Must have missed this the first time round.

Nice to see the car staying party of the community.

Can’t go wrong with @NorthloopCup doing anything gearbox related! He knows more about them than mr Kipling knows about cakes!

Are you coming to CSF19?

Lovely cup shame as it looked a clean car standard really nice tho mate ?
Thanks for the kind comments. Unfortunately the pictures look better than it actually is. There is not really a single panel on it that hasn’t got a dent or scratches over them. It was never my intention to keep it standard. It was bought for only 1 purpose and that was to turn it into a track toy. I blame @pule333 for making me do it. ?

Busy couple of weeks. Removed my AST’s and took them to Cooksports in Bristol to have them rebuilt, only to discover that the fronts are totally uneconomical to be rebuilt. So I ended up buying a complete brand new set of AST 5100’s. Also I collected a complete subframe and rear suspension beam from an Ebayer in Macclesfield. I stripped it all apart and had a few bits powder coated ready for next week when hopefully my gearbox is back from @NorthloopCup and everything will be fitted all together. Spent a few hours on the car the last few days getting all the dash back in.

Tuesdays are my day off so time to get cracking again. Started with fitting my AST’s then took a break and went to have my new R888r’s fitted. Finally got the car back on the ground and took it for a spin. Wow just wow. I thought it handled well before, even though the old AST’s were knackered, but now with the cage in, new suspension and 888s the transformation is unreal. It literally feels like a completely different car. Next update is gonna be a biggie. Car is going in on Thursday for totally undercarriage refresh, gripper equipped rebuilt gearbox (big thanks to @NorthloopCup) new drive shafts. Then it’ll be off for a full Geo setup. Can’t wait to get this thing back on track.

So. The list of things that happened yesterday.

Powerflex polybushes to all the undercarriage.
Freshly powder coated subframe and rear beam.
New PBS brake pads all around
New steering joints inner and outer.
New bottom ball joints.
Rebuilt gearbox with a Gripper diff.
ARP bolts for the Conrad’s.
Brake fluid flush.
New rearbeam brake pipes.
New handbrake cables.

Something my mechanic stumbled upon by accident was, if you have a 172 then order rear brake pipes and handbrake cables for a 182. For some strange reason the 182 items, which are the same, are £10 cheaper per item. 4 items = £40 savings.
Last week when he was working on another 172 the Renault parts supplier didn’t have any 172 handbrake cables so Sean (My mechanic) said what about for a 182. Boom yes they did and they’re £10 per side cheaper. Same thing happened yesterday when it was discovered my cables where buggered. We then asked about the brake pipes and same thing happened with the pipes. So there’s a hack for people.

The Diff is so so better than I expected. Excellent traction even in the wet weather and brand new R888r.

Next is a full geo setup and I can book a shake down track day. I CANNOT WAIT.

So had a really good shake down. Car had a few issues in the morning which was resolved through some suspension adjustments. Car is now transformed and I managed to cut 8 seconds off my previous times. I tried really hard to stay close to @pule333 as you’ll see on the video. I even had time to give him the “V’s” as he passed me. Roll on Nurburgring. I can’t wait.

Nice to see you building a proper track car and using it as it's intended. As already mentioned, Oulton, Donington and Cadwell are far more fun than Silverstone and Bedford... I hope you have a good 'Ring trip!

Might not be a match in speed but it equals it in fun factor. ?

Decided to get myself to an early Birthday present. A nice brand new Trailer from H&T trailers. Highly recommend them for a cracking deal. All locked and loaded ready for the Nurburgring next week. I can’t wait.

Lol thanks man.. Tbf, I've been in the fortunate position of taking lots of knowledge from this forum and pick out all the good ideas and recommendations and apply them to my build.. Also i have a crazy lunatic mate ( @pule333 ) that pushes me along the way.. The journey so far with "Babe" has been quite a fun one although quite expensive, but when I'm out there on the track its priceless.. When things start becoming normal and we can get back on track, ill post up where and when we'll be out and maybe come join us..
