Droning noise

There's a relatively loud droning noise when I ease off the power, not so noticeable when accelerating and is unaffected by cornering(so dont think it's going to be wheel bearings) - what could it be? Driveshaft?cv joints? Gearbox? My new low entry jack will be arriving tomorrow so can get it on axel stands tomorrow for a look underneath! Took it to a local garage and they said it was too low to get on their ramps :/ it's not even stupidly low though?? Any things I can check for myself? Thanks in advance for any help guys/gals!

Droning normally means wheel bearing. Unless they've got a few miles left in them you wont notice any cornering difference.

Jack a corner up, grab the back of the tyre (put gloves on!) and wiggle the wheel violently .. if there's any play, it's probably bearings.

Failing that, take it to a garage who aren't complete numpties or the laziest fekkers going. Infact, Call Richard at Automotive Engineering. He runs the place, one man band. Tell him Rob James with the noisy green subaru wagon suggested him !

If it is gearbox, what's the best replacement? New? 2nd hand? Reconditioned? How much is this likely to set me back? Cheers for the replies

If you don't want to get your hands dirty you're looking between 600 - £700..It's a pig of a job if you've not done it before. Box out, all new bearings /syncros then back in & off you trot

Second hand box can be sort for 200 to 300 quid, but then if it wears out 2 months down the line you'll be head butting walls. Tony Hunter (Burpspeed) recommended a specialist not long ago, can't seem to find the name at the moment

If it's possible for me to diy it I definitely will! I am capable with most diy jobs for my car but would definitely need a guide etc? Don't care if it takes two days or whatever, it's a learning circle and would be invaluable knowledge/experience!
