BMW 535d

  535d / t5 caravelle
Right had the car a couple of weeks now, yes its a great machine and fair shifts for a big lump, a pleasure to drive blah blah blah........

I've put 15mm wheel spacers on the rears, looks much better for it, and had a mate remove the swirl flaps yesterday.

future plans are a wheel refurb ( shortly )

put plain number plates on

get it detailed

thinking of buying a dpf/de-cat kit, egr delete and obviously a map, should see a good 350bhp then.

Good choice mate, I’ve had two of those, same spec. I Love the sport spec on that model and the must have 19 spider alloys on yours ?

My daily just now is a 530 in carbon black also, which does benefit from the detail u mention, but just look at the paint the wrong way and it marks.... softest paint I’ve had on a car in years ? and u know I need to have things clean and blemish free ?

I’ll look forward to your modifications but given the grunt it has, does it need anymore power........? Maybe I’m just getting old and like my comfort now ?

Do love these in this colour with best wheel choice ?
What sort of mpg does it do on a run is swirl flaps easy nod and does it require map to run correctly after?

That looks very nice! Mine looked pretty clean when I picked it up, then I parked it in the sunlight, swirl city lol, so yeah it will definitely benefit from a detail, great colour though, looks different depending on the light.

Does it need more power? Erm no not really, it goes more than well enough as it is, but I think it would be rude not to unleash its full potential.

Well I’ve just done my 1st tank of fuel, £95 to brim it, and I just managed 500 miles, trip computer is saying it’s averaging around 27-28mpg, but that’s probably about 75% driving on the motorway at 70mph, and the rest just knocking about, but I have been driving it very steady, I’ll be on the motorway again tomorrow night, so I’ll reset the trip computer and see what it reads, think it was reading 31-32mpg when I looked the other week on the motorway.

So not great on fuel, but better than my r53 and r26 was! Mind you I’m sure if I start booting it, mpg will drop a lot.

I got my mate to do the swirl flaps, he took the car and returned it done, said it wasn’t a big job, no mapping required, think that’s more for def/egg delete.

Had the same issue, sunlight shows all with this colour...... fuel economy is about right, although I say low to mid 30s...... I must be getting old though as the 43 with the current 530 is much more palatable ?

spiders suit this shape so much more than the 18s. It's just impossible to buy any without cracks for sensible money ?

My 335's getting 40 odd on the motorway, high 20's with solely town useage, mid 30's on average.

Have you checked that yours is getting up to temperature correctly? Should be high 80's/90 coolant wise iirc.

Car looks great btw! Re: the DPF, they can be a bit smelly with it removed apparently, so as long as everything is working for it to regen properly, it should last a decent amount of time. If its already knackered, well, it might not be worthwhile fixing ... remap wise, they are rather amusing when tinkered with, just be wary of who you use, a friends one with DPF/EGR delete is ridiculously quick, but imho smokes a bit too much.

I was really considering one of these over the e90 but the other half thought it was too big. Still really like them and always check them out if I see them on the road. Good purchase! It is a heavy beast I would think? Should explain the mpg

Dave eluded to a good point above. Poor MPG on both the 30d and 35d are generally down to themostat faults. When i bought mine it was sitting at around 24mpg around town.

Mate has a E60 530D and his does about 40 average he says, mapped by WYT. Cat, DPF and swirl flaps removed and a new turbo. For a 3.0 diesel it's pretty good considering my 2.0 diesel megane does 39 average.

I keep looking into getting a 35d but the one thing that puts me off about BMW is the fact that when you buy one, you can put money on the fact that all the bushes are usually shagged and need replacing. Anyone that says otherwise haven't looked hard enough?

All BMW's eat bushes for some reason..

Mid 30's should be achievable I'd have thought. My merc is 312/530 and weighs 40 tonnes and has averaged 37 mpg over the past 1650 miles according to the trip. (and I don't drive slow)

My mates 535d is terrible on fuel around town but it's modified. On the mway it's still peachy though and 45ish. We recently found out it's quicker than another mates Supra..?

The tolerances are stupidly tight that's why, any sort of movement and they chew themselves. Super pro bushes and a good alignment stops it

37mpg is awesome for a proper luxury barge! I drive mine like a c**t off the motorway so it takes a massive hit on mpg. Yeah, 60mph pull they will beat almost anything its retarded!? I'm sure theres a vid of a 530d pulling away from an M5? I'd be gutted!

So tonight, went on the motorway for about 20 minutes sat at 70mph, eventually got it up to 35.6 mpg, think it would have crept up a bit more had I continued, the killers gonna be local driving with the mrs taking it to work, the car will probably only do 8-10k a year so not the end of the world. Just gonna enjoy it for what it is.

I’ve not figured out the door locks yet, can you alter how they work? One Rear passenger door opens from the inside the other doesn’t, not sure if it’s a fault/a setting/child lock, not had chance to look yet, presume it’s child lock. Also noticed when I take kids to school, doors automatically lock when you start the car, then when I get to school, and pull up to let kids out, doors are still locked so I end up opening one from the inside like a muppet and letting them out that way, keys still in ignition at this point, maybe they unlock when the key comes out of the ignition? Again, not had chance to have a play with it.

Far to technical this bmw stuff for me ?

I test drove two and they both broke down so I lost confidence.

Good looking motors.

I’m hoping for better luck with mine lol, been on bmw warranty till dec 2017 apparently, then bmw specialists, so hopefully any issues have been dealt with properly, drives spot on.

Had the same issue, sunlight shows all with this colour...... fuel economy is about right, although I say low to mid 30s...... I must be getting old though as the 43 with the current 530 is much more palatable ?

Mmmm maybe I should have a got a 530d I keep looking at the mpg myself ?

spiders suit this shape so much more than the 18s. It's just impossible to buy any without cracks for sensible money ?

The one I was supposed to look at before this had 18’s, the spiders do look good, and I have heard they like the odd crack, guess I’ll find out what state there in when I get them refurbed, no vibrations though, so fingers crossed there right.

My 335's getting 40 odd on the motorway, high 20's with solely town useage, mid 30's on average.

Not checked the temp yet, although I have read about the thermostats causing poor mpg, it’s on a hidden menu isn’t it? I need to have a look on youtube and figure it out, regarding the dpf, I’m assuming it’s working ok, but I figure if I’m going to remap it, I might as well go the full hog and do away with it, was debating contacting mashed potatoes off the bmw forum, think it’s harper motorsports, for the remap, although I do have ade tuning local to me, who maps my mates 725 bhp Astra, so will have a think on that, also rs tuning are an option, just going to get some bits together 1st.

Yeah it is a bloody big lump, don’t think my mrs likes the idea of her using it for work haha! Just Google’s the weight 1660 Kg lol.

I have a mate with a 530d mapped, he’s just got 750 miles out of a tank, driving like mrs daisy, usually gets about 580, not sure what it works out at mpg, didn’t know about the bushes.

That’s decent mpg that for the Merc, bet it fair shifts along that, liking the supra bit haha

Didn’t say anything

To be fair, I never checked the mpg on the mini or Megane on the motorway, but I know knocking about mini was 25/26 I think, Megane more like 23/24 from memory.

Aye bushes are only noticable for people that drive cars properly. Most 530d drivers can only go fast in a straight line?

Tbh a full superpro kit isn't vastly expensive considering it's a BMW. I'd definitely get it mapped though, when my mate removed the DPF the other bits before getting it mapped it was returning like 26mpg. It was bloody awful on juice

That’s why I’ve not noticed it then ?

It’s definitely seeing a map, I may just stick some masking tape over the mpg display, probably for the best

Re: the doorlocks, they auto lock as you pull away, then auto unlock when you remove the key. To unlock them with the key in the ignition, simply pull the handle twice, once to unlock, once to get out. Rear doors are probably child locked, or one is broken.

Secret menu is here: http://mr-fix.info/bmw-e60-e61-hidden-menu-obc/

In terms of bushes, on my e46's i replaced the front wishbone bushes on every single car i bought, havent done any of the e9*'s. e6*'s are a heavy old beast though, so may be different. In terms of the DPF, do bear in mind that fitting a pipe is an instant MOT fail. If you do do it, its more sensible to remove the DPF, open it up from the top side, gut it, then re-fit it. Looks the same from a visual inspection underneath then ... saves having to get special MOTs lol.

You dont buy a *35d for economy btw, you buy a *30d for that ... or a *20d if you're a pauper/dont mind driving something that sounds like a transit :ROFLMAO:

@bill that’ll be the battery positive wiring recall mate. It’s in the boot and passes through the boot floor. It’s to check for corrosion etc causing problems. Parts aren’t available until later on this month, or at least that’s the update we had the other day.

If the car doesn’t get up to temp, it’ll start to coke up mate. Short journeys are also a killer and get them coking up.

My 30d is always pulling 47mpg average on my commute. ?

So last Friday I had a dent man out to remove a small dent on the rear quarter panel, job done! Today I go out and find another one on the front passenger wing, slight crease and a dent, god knows when that happened, but I’ve been onto him, sorting it week after next.

Ha cool! I’ll get it booked in ASAP, cheers for the link, I searched for recalls, but it never gave any details on what the recall was for.

I’ll have a play around with the locks to see if there working as you described, and I’ll check that link out for the hidden menu, cheers, bushes unless I get informed they need doing I’ll probably just leave them, unless I’m feeling flush, but have other priorities with it atm, but like you say it’s a heavy heap so probably shagged, drives very well though.

I have a friendly mot man just up the road from me, but gutting the dpf sounds like a better option tbh, I knew they where s**t on fuel before I bought it tbh, you only live once, I’ve always liked them since they first came out, but never felt old enough to own one ? oh and I have a transit also ?

Thanks, it won’t be till then by the time i get chance to book it in anyway, will check temp next, so if I was doing say 50% short journeys and same on the motorway, would this be ok?

Sorry I missed the bit about 47mpg ?

The most important thing is that it gets up to temp and can regen the dpf mate. Quite what they’re like with a dpf delete, I don’t know as we don’t see them with that sort of work done tbh.

You may find you don’t have any issues mate. I can only base my experience on what we see at work, and that’s on the later engines that are under more stringent emission controls.

Jokes aside, realistically the grills dont look too bad on black cars, just dont do the wheels in black as well ffs.

I saw a black e60 the other day, black wheels, grills, full on black tints..........looked super w**k!

Wheels are being refurbed in silver lol

I like black grills, but the double blades just look a bit Bradford

Went for the double blades just to try and bring it up to date a bit more, but as I’m from Blackburn/Bradford same difference ( not for long though ) I’ll just blend in now with me bro’s ?

Them black grills look loads better!

Really like these. Wouldn't mind one as my next daily but being insured by Greenlight at the moment is delaying that.

Anyone know what the 520's and 525's are like of this era? I'd be more after comfort and decent mpg than speed so a 535 probably wouldn't be needed.

20d is one to avoid. If you’re going bm it’s generally stated that you should go 6 cylinder.

Dont bother with a 20d

N47 is quite possibly the worst engine made, right after the Rover K series
