Best Free (or Cheap) Website Builder?

Looking to build a website and just wondered if anyone had any suggestions? To begin with, I just want a simple holding page, but will look to build something a bit more complex later. I have hosting capability, so ideally want a desktop tool where I can put a page together and then host it.

Not sure about now but back when I used to do IT/Linux sysadmin stuff Word Press was pretty popular. Word Press with a nice theme and some plugins, should see you with a decent enough site.

I've not tried Word Press. I had a look at Wix, but they seem to want to charge me an annual fee to transfer the site onto my hosting. Bit cheeky.
