    Restoring a Ph1

The people who were going to restore my Ph1 172 (ALSA in South Wales who look after one of the BTCC cars) can't do it now due to illness so I need someone else instead to do it. Has anyone else restored a Ph1's body back to a high standard and therefore has a good place to recommend. It doesn't...

Key repaired but engine won't start

Any advice appreciated, I followed the guide after soldering on a new micro switch http://www.cliosport.net/threads/how-to-sync-your-central-locking-with-your-key-new-key.585981/#post-7817632 . The key opens the car fine but I can't start the engine and the immobilizer light on the dash doesn't...

Can anybody recommend a good bodyshop close to South East Wales as my Ph1 has rust on the offside rear arch and under the filler cap. Thanks

    Top Hose

Renault no longer sells the top coolant hose (radiator to thermostat) for Ph1 172s so does anyone know if a Ph2 172 and 182 hose are the same?

    Heater Matrix and Renault fittings

Any idea if the aftermarket ones can use the Renault coolant pipe connectors or are you expected to use hose clips? Cheers

    Boot lock question

When I click the key to unlock the car and open one of the doors it then keeps the car unlocked, but if I don't open a door it will lock itself again after a couple of minutes. I thought the same thing used to happen if I opened the boot that it would cancel the auto-lock, but when I do it now...

    Steering column seal

What a horrible job, still the new one is now fitted and it all works fine. But I am wondering, does the big rubber flappy thing need to form a good seal with the bulkhead?

    Rack - sloshing noise, normal?

With the engine off, lying underneath if I move the wheels from side to side there is lot of sloshing noise in the steering rack. Is that normal, I thought the valves inside the rack would stop the fluid sloshing about?

    Steering Column Movement

I have some movement in the steering column (Ph1 172) and thought it was the height adjustment mechanism just not engaging properly, but having tried it again it does seem to be moving in all positions. Is there a bearing on the column that could be the cause or do these height adjustment...

Ebay Dialogys - does it work?

My version of Dialogys stopped working when I changed my computer so I need a new version. I have seen you can buy it from Ebay, but wondered if anyone has done this recently and if it worked properly?

172 Ph1 - Worm gear in CD Changer

I'm fed up with taking the CD changer out and taking it all apart to put the worm gear drive back into the right position (that's what stops the CDs from loading up, easy fix but mine must be worn to much after 15 years of use. So is there a direct replacement 6 CD changer I can buy - common...

    Sportlines are fantastic

What a difference they make to my Ph1. It feels really good, well impressed. They have replaced some 182 Cup springs that I've had on for a few years until one snapped a couple of weeks ago. Good price direct from Germany £105 delivered and they came a day earlier than promised, that's efficiency.

    So removing the gearbox...

I only put the engine back in last month and now a synchro has gone so I plan to put my spare gearbox on. Also a front spring has just snapped so both struts are going to be removed to fix this. So I fancy changing the gearbox with the engine in place but haven't done it before and there's no...

    Bonnets - Just Double Checking

Just after confirmation please that all 172 and 182 bonnets were the same and are interchangeable? I've sheared all four bolts off mine and in the process of fitting the thread repairs I have almost gone through it (and I was being really careful!).

    Aux belt tool for tensioner

Anyone else using this tool: Lisle Ratcheting Serpentine Belt Tool? The tool I had with an angled long handle and 3/8 socket welded on has snapped breaking the tensioner, too...

Help identify this unusual engine noise

Any ideas what is causing this unusual noise - it's a rattly RS engine unfortunately but you can just make out the other noise? I thought it was coming from the VVT switch area but now it sounds louder at the front. Definitely not right. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004370266158

    dephaser solenoid noise

My Ph1 has developed a noise under the dephaser solenoid switch. It doesn't stop if I unplug it. It sounds like a pigeon at rest to me! I'm wondering if it might be cam related? I took the top mount off and it isn't the dephaser, it's something under the solenoid if not the valve itself. Any...

ABS ring 26 or 44 teeth

Does anyone know if it's 26 or 44 teeth on the front rings for a Ph1 172 and does it matter if I have 44 on the rear but 26 on the front rings? Thanks

    Samco hoses - Ph1 172

Samco's website shows the coolant hose kits fitting Clio's from 2002 onwards. Has anyone bought a kit for a Ph1, do they fit properly?

    Oil leak from exhaust manifold

It's a small amount leaking out and seems to be bubbling from the manifold at the top nut as shown in the photo. The oil level on the dip stick hardly ever drops between oil changes. I've torqued it again but it still comes out. Any ideas what is causing it please as it's a bit messy?

Power steering causing a cut out

Had a moment tonight, thought my belt had snapped again. Lost the power steering and all the lights came up on the dash. Turns out the thing had only cut out though. Phew. Last time it did this it was a worn PAS switch. So I took it to the trading estate and did some turns on full lock. Going...

    New thermostat - slightly livlier

After 12 years on the car I changed the old thermostat for a new one. Needle now sits in the middle of the temp gauge and car is feeling a bit better for it. Shows how small changes make a difference. Cost £15 from Renault (comes with a gasket fitted so don't let them flog you it separately).

Auxillary belt too close to pulley

Here's a photo of my aux belt showing markings on it where it rubs between the tensioner and the pulley. Is is because the is pulley fooked?

    438 Cams - what's the downside?

Ok, so it's looking like good gains of about 15% are achievable with 438s on 1*2s. I'm tempted, but I'm not going down the mythical road of matched inlets again (waste of £50 in fuel driving to the Flat Lands to give a Man called Ben and his angels some money for no noticable gain). So is there...

    Turning an Exhaust camshaft?

I'm trying to rotate an exhaust camshaft to position the groove to be able to fit the Renault horseshoe tool as part of a timing belt change. I think it flipped 180 degrees and is giving lots of resistance getting it back round. Is there a correct way to turn it back, e.g. clockwise or anti...

Ph1 172 eratic idle when front wheels are jacked up

Does any one know why this happens? I disconnected the ABS sensor and it made no difference. I disconnected the speedo sensor and the idle speed returns to normal. I replaced the sensor and it still does it. It seems to be something else that's controlling the idle when the wheels move and is...

    List for MOT testing centres

I'm trying to find the MOT testing centres in Bristol. Rather than go to a garage who will take my car to the station, I will do it myself (and avoid someone having a joy ride and listening to my good taste in music on my CD). Any one know where to find such a list - the internet search brings...

Whoops I've left two injectors in the manifold

I pulled a pretty stubborn fuel rail off today (it's been on for 12 years) and basically some bits broke off. It was the metal circlips that broke, but two injectors came out and two decided to stay inside the manifold. If I take off the manifold will I be able to push them out and will the...
