Mk2 1.1 Alize phase 1 X Reg - Cambelt Snapped

  Renault 5 GT Turbo & 172
Just some quick advise, a girl I work with has the above car and snapped the cambelt last night, I've just over heard her speaking on the phone in the office.

She paid £1,600 for the car about 18 months ago. I'm trying to weigh up her options as she's spoken to her garage (who she rates and uses all the time and is confident they wont rip her off) about a replacement reconditioned engine. They have said circa £600 - £700 but it would be cheaper to repair.

Would you agree? what would you advise to do in this situation.

Thanks in advance

alize is 1.4

grande is 1.1

i snapped the cambelt on my 1.1
can fix it yourself for circa £200 assuming there is no damage to the head or pistons,
which is unlikely.

only way to find out is the strip the head down. I was lucky, i only had 6 bent valves!

however, £600 would be the going rate to pay a garage to change an angine.

I've repaired a couple of 1.2 8v engines with failed belts, they're a very good engine (under powered, but good) and worth fixing if it ran well before. I'd think around £500 to fix all in.

I did one with 155k on the clock last year, had a look at the bores with the head off and they were like new!!!

Cambelt snapped on mine, and I had it fixed, went on forever after that tbh.

As Danny says, may not be quick, but they're very good engines.
