Bodywork HELP

Bought a 1995 mk1 1.2 RL couple of months back.Very good condition etc...
Sorted service and MOT , now turning my attention to the outside.

The previous owner obviously scraped the rear quarter and attempted to repair it.Looks like they just tried to patch it with touchup stick. To be fair paint match is excellent just their is more paint where the scrathes arnt, also lots of brush marks.

Im a complete novice when it comes to bodywork, just wandering what steps i would take and what stuff id need to sort it (without taking it to a bodyshop).

Anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance,

-P320 sandpaper
-P800 or P1000 or P1200
-basecoat and laquer (or just basecoat if its non metallic)
-aerosol cellulose
-rubber block
-bucket

Sand it down with P320 dry on a rubber block, feather out all the scratches and down to bare metal if need be

prime it with your aerosol primer, should be dry in an hour without heat, sooner with heat

wet sand that with P800/P1000 or P1200, doesnt matter which.

clean it up and spray it with your basecoat, let that dry completely then laquer it**

**if its a high solid colour (non metallic) just spray your 2k paint, basically paint and laquer mixed together, it dries hard with a shiny finish.

Guide Here generally the same principal

^^^^ it isnt metallic its plain red (same colour as trophy). Also i dont think it was laquerd originally (anyone confirm?).

The scratches are only small. If i rub down the whole area and respray, wont it be a different colour to the rest of the car?

Thanks for your reply btw.

wont be a different colour if its a good colour match and you keep it local.

but if you want it 100% perfect then its a bodyshop job as the whole rear quarter will need to be painted so the basecoat is blended in properly.

as for the trophy, im pretty sure renault are running water based paints now so it needs the water based laquer too. on your car it will be solvent based paints so it doesnt need laquer

(i aint familiar with water based tbh, ive only worked with them once)

Do renault do aerosols? if they dont then best place to get one thats a good match?

( I aint a member yet :( so i cant access that guide).

Cheers

renault do paints yep but dont touch them, theyre overpriced.

apparantly autopaints.co.uk are good, but myself ide just look in your yellow pages for your local paint supplyer, take them your petrol cap and get a can mixed up to the colour of the car. this takes in account, weathering, age etc, and matches the car, not the colour code.

i pay £9.99 per can for basecoat, £4.99 for laquer and £3.99 for cellulose primer.

Thanks for th tips.Ill have a go tomorrow, and report back.May even post pics if it aint a total disaster, as its my first attempt :rasp:

nps, just make sure that if it starts raining that youve got primer on the car, get under some sheets and primer it or itll go rusty
