Oil Changes at home - pumping out via the dipstick...



I might have gone mad, so ignore if this is sheer stupidity.

It's been a while since I serviced my own cars, and I'm wanting to do some fluid changes on the Clio to keep it nice and fresh.

I'm going to grab the pack from RPD but I'm sure when I had my s2000 the latest way for people to do changes and avoid mashing up the sump plug was to pump the old oil out via the dipstick hole.

is this a thing on the clio, or have I lost my mind and imagined this entire experience...

Sounds like a way of making a very easy job much more annoying for no reason? The sup plugs seem pretty robust.

The gearbox oil is difficult enough lol.

Perfectly possible but just a faff imo.

I prefer to drop the plug when the oil is roasting as well to get as much as possible out.

Plenty easy, oil needs to be upto temperature to make it easier to get out.

Saves bothering to jack the car up

push tube in as normal and it's fine. did one before i took sump off to see how much it does actually get out and was pretty much bone dry.

I’m confused how you lot are finding it easier to Jack the car up, take the undertray off, remove sump plug, get new washer then refit as being easier than sticking a tube in the dipstick and sit back and relax while the pump sucks the oil out.

For me it's because I never put the engine undertray back on and have 2 bits of wood that are the perfect height to drive on to. The longest bit of oil changes is defo waiting on it all draining.
 
Glad I wasn't going mad and imagining this was a thing !

What tool do you lot use for it? I assume process is:

- Have warm oil
- Pump oil out
- Replace Oil Filter
- Pour oil back in

?

I have one of these Pela pumps It works well tbh, and is easy to use. I only use it to do oil changes on the fabia as I can’t be arsed to remove the under trays.

Make sure you guys don’t get the oil to hot
I once made the mistake of pumping out oil from my s5 after a very hard run
After it was nearly drained the plastic sooker body went a little soft with the heat and imploded spraying oil all over the place

Ive used a good quality vac pump on all my cars for oil changes via dipstick hole for last 15 years. No more mess and it gets the lot out, as much as taking the plug out.

Took the sump off a gtt engine that i had changed the oil via dipstick for around 70k and no sludge buildup or nowt.
 
Watched a test video on this recently, can't remember what it was on. But the summary was that the pump kits work well and are good to use, IF you are happy leaving a tiny amount at the bottom of your sump.

Removing the sump plug retrieved more ML of oil.

I would not be happy with leaving anything in there myself. I want as much out as possible. But I have extreme OCD.

Do you have to keep pumping it or does it start siphoning it out itself?

just get an electric one, they connect to the car batter. Have to wiggle the pipe about in the dipstick to get the last dregs out but works well enough.

Use an electric one, they're cheap as f**k on eBay.

takes seconds to jack up car and remove sump plug, under tray stays on as theres a cap on is specifically for that.

for piece of mind I'll stick to what I know

Debris is always a bad sign that you will need to spend money soon. Only ever seen bad sludge build up when the engine has been poorly serviced.

I don't think I've ever given something 15 pumps.

OK, "need" is pushing it. I could just reset the service indicator and forget about it, but I've ordered the oil and filter now. For £45 including the pump, may as well!

Mind you, that is more than 5% of the cost of the car in the first place.

Life hack for the lazy f**k millennials :
1 - remove oil filter
2 - start engine
3 - engine will pump oil out for you
4 - engine will seize
4 - replace filter & refill with oil
5 - now just tidy up and you're done (y)

Fixed that for you, since when do lazy millennials care about tidying up when they can just leave the mess and stare at their phones?? ;)

I pump the oil out 3/4 times and the other time drop the sump plug. It's miles easier pumping out (and I have to do it bloody often on the current car so it makes sense), but you don't necessarily get all the debris out of the sump doing so. So for that 1 time in 4 I drop the plug and give it a decent amount of time to drain everything out.

Can’t do this when pumping the oil out.

Old ways are the best ways on this one for me.

I'd never even thought of that, I don't currently have a flat area where I can jack the car up safely and I need to do an oil change on the van of misery.


Even if it's complete crap, that looks like it's worth a punt at six quid, I've got a £5 eBay voucher to use

I use that one it's fine.

If you find anything of note when doing that the engine has already lunched itself (y)
