Kangoo 172 cup

  Clio
I miss my extra 1.4 energy . Such a work horse .

Love your setup at home with the garage . Do as much work as you like on rusty renaults and still have the family around you

New engine stripped and cleaned up for the Extra. C3j non turbo as same block & crank as gtt, with 38k on it probably 10x better condition than any gtt block. Head gasket had rotted on number 1 cylinder but not aproblem as not using the non turbo pistons and liners. Crank and block are mint, they suffer from pitting around the recess where the liner base seals due to age/poor maintenance, this one is sweet after cleaning 25mm or so of sludge out of the block.

Everything stored safely and coated in light oil as awaiting parts from everywhere. Hard to find quality parts in the uk now so a lot of bits coming from overseas. Looking forward to fitting the new gucci parts in stock.

Started building the new engine up last week.

Block and crank cleaned/checked, new King mains in, good coating of graphogen. Shez wanted in on the new build so had her cleaning some parts up and let her torque the main bearing caps up. Nice easy engine to learn on, she is a natural at stuff like this with a bit of instruction. Hopefully will be able to teach her so i can get my feet up and be tea boy in the future?

Should see the piston and liners in this weekend, new cam fitted and dial in the cam timing.

Cheers mate (y) mrs is quite keen to get stuck in on the new engine build. Ill teach her how to do it then i can get my feet up in the future whilst she does the graft ;)

Kangoo update. Rear doors have had a bit of rust above the plastic trim, which was not too bad but let it down a bit. Ive been looking out for clean rear doors, but they are all knackered or miles away, so when a local set came up i jumped on them.

Picked them up last Sat, on collection they were rot free but absolutely rotten with muck, looked straight so paid the dollar and left. After a clean down i was horrified to see a massive scuff on one and various states of fade on the other one where graphics had been. Didnt think to take any pics before sadly.

Nothing to lose as finish not great so clayed them and hit them with the da. The paint is mega thin on vans so proceded with caution initially using a finishing pad and Chemical guys v36..finishing pad was not giving required finish so went for a medium pad which removed 99% of the defects. Followed it up with CG v38 finishing polish and Collinite 476s wax and fitted. Took about 5 hours in total messing about hanging the doors, had to swap latches, wiring as they had chopped the loom, rewire the numberplate lights as corroded. Massive ballache really but done. Need to order some Gtechniq trim restorer to finish off.

Extra van update.

My old rocker bar is quite knackered after years of high rpm so have decided to try out some upgrades this time round. I had seen phosphur bronze rocker bar spacers to replace oem springs, for less friction and less chance of rocker moving at high rpm..cheap too so took a punt.

Found a low mileage gtt rocker bar in my lockup and stripped down/cleaned up.
Phosphur bronze bushes mocked up and tested on cylinder head.

Ordered some billet titanium valve spring retainers, machined from aerospace grade Ti6246. Lightweight 6g each compared to 18g oem. Ive seen a few stock retainers fail so hopefully they will be reliable, and lighter than stock is always good.

Started to clean up and de bracket an old rocker cover. The oem powdercoat is hard as nails and took some sanding off ! Almost ready for some crackle black.

Not much happening at the mo but chipping away at the smaller bits.

Stripped down a spare oil pump to see if it could be used again as new oil pumps are made of unobtanium these days for a gt turbo. The body is ok, not too scored but the rotors are worn and under minimum tolerances, but should go again with a new rotor kit from overseas. Prv was stuck, so had to knock it out with a punch, give it a light clean up & lube, shimmed the spring slightly and refitted. Bagged up and waiting for rotor kit to arrive.

Had a go at opening out the pushrod holes on a spare head from 12mm to 15mm for the Isky pushrods. Seems to be plenty of meat around the holes, so no worries about striking through. A light clean up with a carbide burr and should be enough clearance/good to go.

Big spring clean for the Kangoo today. Been using it loads recently but not cleaning it so wheels were black with brake dust and was looking a bit unloved.

Pre wash & AF snowfoam
20190331_113355.jpg

BH Korrosol on wheels and bodywork as iron fallout all over it
20190331_120228.jpg
20190331_115429.jpg

Next step was 2 bucket wash, followed by drying and protection top up using Gtechniq C2 liquid crystal v3 (was still beading well before so prob not much point but meh)

Next step was to sort the plastics out. They were looking super faded as no loving since last year. Scrubbed them down with apc ready for a coat of Gyeon Q2 Trim, as sick of using trim gel so should get a few months out of this.
20190330_163856.jpg

Finished, looking much better. Will keep on top of it now weather is picking up.

Washed the mrs 250 cup too, as not been cleaned for a few weeks. Totally effortless to clean after the System x ceramic coating, comes up mint.

Also binned the carbon canister valve a few weeks ago as sick of the ticking on idle. Got a few miles out of it before it chucked the eml light on, so fitted a 22ohm resistor from rs components £2.60. Made a small loom to plug in which has worked great, no issues resistor does not even get luke warm in use, no faults logged on clip.

Some more pics now the Gyeon q2 has settled in. I was worried that the cold evening on Sunday would knacker it up as 24hr cure time and should really be left in the garage whilst curing, however its cured lovely to a near oem finish now. Luckily picked the right day to apply as its pissed down since !

Try the Rim on the Trim, works really well! Doesn't even leach down onto the paintwork like you'd expect.

I did think about using it on the trim.

Wasn't sure if it'd last, i'm sure i've seen them say somewhere that it has different binding agents in.

Will give it a go.

Out of interest @Brigsy where did you get your Wiseco tapered piston ring compressor from? I assume the pistons are slightly smaller on the R5s? Clio/Megane pistons are 82.7mm , I presume I would have to get the 83mm version?

I love the gyeon products. Van looks wicked mate.

Cheers mate. Impressed with the Gyeon, first time i have used them.

I've used the Gyeon Rim on my track wheels and it's good stuff.

Need to try Trim.

Might try the Rim, how does it hold out on trackdays ? I have been using finishkare 1000p but have noticed it goes spotty when hot.

I bought the wiseco tapered ring compressor off ebay mate from a motorbike shop, not many places stock them over here. I think the 83mm version would work ok if your careful. The 83mm ones look to be about £50 sadly so maybe a bit expensive if for a one off. R5 are small 76mm, shame as you could have used this one, its sat in the cupboard doing nowt.

It's not bad mate, but tbh the wheels that were on the front have dropped off beading wise when cleaning and that's only after 2 track days.

They claim upto 350°c and it's probably on the limit for track day use. I tend to top it up after a clean with fk1000p too.

I used my vernier calipers last night to check the pistons and the bore of the ph1 block. On the pistons I got ~82mm (however there is carbon deposits on the outside which will hinder an accurate reading!!), the rings expanded were ~85mm,I squeezed the ring with the Vernier best I could and nearly got it down the 82mm, there was still a gap on the ring so confident it would be squeezed in further. The bore of the block looks to be ~82mm.

So I assume I would want the 82mm Wiseco tapered ring compressor?

Sound will give it a go, 2 trackdays probably not bad with the heat off the brakes. I have some deposits on mine now that fallout remover wont shift after Croft last year sadly.

Im not sure what the bore size is of the f4r but just go to the same size or as close as, thats all i did and the pistons just slipped in with a bit of mineral oil as lube(y)

You could get a custom one made up to suit if 82.7mm, seen them on ebay, or machine shop should be able to do one.

Cheers mate (y) booked it on for the Cliosport festival pm track slot so will be on then. I was going to do Croft on Good Friday but left it too late to book sadly. Need to get it out more often

Small update on the Extra van, head built up for the new engine. Piper valve springs, Titanium valve spring retainers and phosphur bronze bushed rocker bar fitted, a few small mods done to the head too. Will get the can in and timed up next weekend, head on and in the hole in the next few weeks !

Blue meg out of the garage for the first time in ages, really need to recomission it as still an awesome motor, hardly needs any work too so will get on with that soon. Still cannot decide which one i like the best out of the pair !

Plan was to use the 250 to go to malton Breakfast meet, but when i realised there was a s**t load of yellow mk3's going quickly washed the Kangoo, late doors snowfoam, no contact wash and power rinse, blow dry with leaf blower 20 mins and done

Went to Malton and got there by 830am and the estate was full so had to park in the overflow field sadly

As pictured with my mates FK2 Type R, we had an awesome blast over Blakey Ridge early doors.

Croft prep soon as full day booked for 27th May bank hol. Just oil and filter and brake pads to change, got some nos Mintex M1177 to try which i believe the Clio gen2 cup cars used. The PBS are shot now braking is crap so will see how they fair, will give it a quick nut & bolt check, see if anything else needs attention as Cliosport Festival booked too. Thanks for reading all !

Croft prep on going for 27th May, been a bit slack as a bit on with just starting a new job.

First feck up, changed oil and filter for oem elf 5/40, knocked end of number 1 injector and it fell off
20190513_210155.jpg

With 2 trackdays booked just bit the bullet and replaced all for new Magnetti Marelli for reliabilities sake, as im sure another one was on its way as had rough cold start again

Thought it was you as that little Clio is quite distinctive!
I live on the sea front at Seaton Carew so alway have a nice view out to sea.
I bet the van is good fun round croft I know it was fun in the Puma. But only done it once. I am tempted to try and do croft later on in the year with the Twingo.

Days leave off work today so had a couple of hours on the Kangoo. Took it for a run out and its running great on the new injectors, no hesitation, no misfires or nothing.

Mintex m1177 fitted up front, see how they perform. Need to take it out and bed the pads in but bob hope of that today or tomorrow as the Radio 1 big weekender is on so the roads that i use will be rammed. Late one tomorrow night may be the only option !

Cleaned wheels up inside and out as they were looking unloved. Hit them with some diluted acidic alloy wheel cleaner devils broth to give them a deep clean, followed by Korrosol and then dried & sealed with Finishkare 1000p. No doubt they will be black as feck after bedding the pads in:LOL: still come up nice though. Not sure why it looks like half the writing has gone as still fine, must be due to the angle of the pic or sun glare.
