Nice. What's 'safe' with these engines when mapped?

I think the tried and tested route is de-cat, exhaust, FMIC, and injectors

That should see near 280bhp and 300 torque which I believe the torque has to be capped on standard internals for safety. I'm not 100% on this though and somebody may come along and correct my numbers! 😂

Great result at Surrey Rolling Road!

Considering the Megane (as far as I know) hasn't been mapped at least not under my ownership and since I fitted both the FMIC and de-cat it made a healthy 252bhp and 230 torque.

Charlie said it was fueling very well, better than some of the mapped cars! [emoji23]

Once I get the injectors fitted and an actual mapping session I'm sure both of those figures will improve considerably.

Got to be mapped, surely?

Good figures and a really good base to start with though.

The thought had crossed my mind mate, but I can't prove it either way.

Regardless as you said its a great start, and should hopefully give some good results when I get it mapped next year.

Not much to report on since the RR day in October. The car is absolutely filthy, and is crying out for a good clean but the shitty weather hasn't really inspired me...

The Meg hasn't put a foot wrong however, and after so many problems with my Impreza it's so nice just to jump in the car and drive it.

The drivers door card pocket has started to fill with water however, which appears to be a common problem, and one I'll investigate soon. Is there a straightforward fix to this?

With the decat and fmic now fitted, my next move was to get the Meg mapped and fit some bigger injectors at the same time, but after reading about a few engine failures I'm a little worried now to take this next step!

What are peoples thoughts? Is it not worth the risk considering my engine is now at 90k? Or is there something else I can upgrade at the same time to future proof this increase in power?

I've read that upgrading the fuel pump would be a good idea, but not sure whether that's the case?

  A special one.
Nice mate and good to hear it's been trouble free so far.
I've also heard about replacing the fuel pump which I think is a very good idea especial as your cars on 90k I would replace it as a matter of course.

The next mod I keep seeing is replacing the injector rail to a centre feed rail off of a later meg.

Dan whis building the meg powered Clio is doing something with his fuel system, might be worth tagging him into this.
Good timing, just spotted this haha.
Yeah Rob I've made a return rail set up so that pressure is always in the fuel rail then drops when it needs to. It's not an oem build though and does mean you've got to drill and tap the fuel rail, get an Fpr and mount that somewhere along with some fuel sender unit changes. I'd be massively interested in seeing what sort of pressures your fuel set up is running with the mileage is on and get the dp from that to a new unit to see if there's any difference.

Theories are all over the place. Cylinder 1 is usually the failure on ringlands due to fuel starvation. Suggestions are tired pumps and/or because the megane rail os a dead head so folk are using the ph1 clio return rail with a line back to the pump

Cheers guys, plenty of food for thought!

I may price up an OE fuel pump, as already mentioned I think it would be worthwhile part to refresh.

If the Renault part is up to the task then I won't bother with a Walbro as I don't want to go modifying anything. Unlike my Trophy I really don't want to go crazy with the Meg! [emoji23]

A new car is possibly on the horizon next year so I'd rather keep things nice and simple. I just wouldn't mind a little more power! [emoji6]

Door pocket is an easy fix, drill a hole in the bottom of it. [emoji106]
If you're going to sell next year I'd go for a stage 1 map, 260ish bhp and put a new standard fuel pump in. Don't risk f**king it up by chasing 300/300. 260 felt fine to me.

Yes mate it's cracking car and in hindsight I wish I bought one ages ago!

I keep looking at the Clio 220 EDC Trophy and will be definitely test driving one next year to see whether the auto box is a deal breaker...

Sent from my G8141 using Tapatalk
Rob, you're more than welcome to test drive mine. It's not a 220 Trophy but a mapped pre facelift with 250ft/lbs torque. At least it will give you an idea of the paddles and Tiptronic option.

Cheers Rich,

Once Christmas and new year is out of the way I may well take you up on that offer. I'm not sure if my local Renault dealer has one to test drive.

For me the automatic gearbox/paddles etc is the deal breaker. The rest of the car is spot on!

To be fair if it's anything like my Logitech steering wheel on Project Cars 2 it will be a winner! [emoji6]

Door pocket is a symptom of a further issue. The water is in the door cavity. It destroys the window regulators and temic modules. IIRC from the wifes old GT150 the door rubbers in the door shut seal the drain holes when the door is closed.

It's few and far between the dealers having one physically in, then there's the test drive.

I'm more than happy to come over and you spend a few hours familiarising yourself with the gearbox and what it has to offer, to go through the different modes between Auto, Sport, paddles, tiptronic. The gear changes are pretty much quick and seamless.

Mate that's really good of you, thank you.

I will drop you a message via Facebook next year to arrange a time and a date.

I phoned my local 'Martins' Renault dealer and they do have a 220 Trophy demonstrator, so I've got a demo/roadtest booked for 3pm on the 30th of December!
I will keep you posted mate.
Result! Let's hope it has the RS Monitor, it's a handy piece of kit to have..... Enjoy, and keep me posted if you'd like to know anything. I'll do my best!:smile:

I’m on the standard fuel system so there’s no need for you to upgrade just get a new oem pump as mentioned. I’d upgrade to 630cc injectors though as the standard injectors would be at their limit once mapped.

Took a 220 Trophy for a test drive this afternoon, and it really is a fantastic car.

Genuinely impressed with the gearbox, and what was a real deal breaker is actually one of the best features IMO.

Need to sort a few things out, but an order maybe placed in January! [emoji106]

no more Meg? :(
I'm afraid not mate!

It's nothing personal, the Megane has been great. I just fancy something new!

The urge to modify the Megane just isn't there. I think all the problems I had with my Impreza has really put me off throwing thousands at a car that may or may not let go when you least expect it!

Owning something brand new really appeals to me at the moment. Something that's good to go with a warranty, and once that's run out I can just do some small modifications (bolt ons and mapping) without breaking the bank or the car!

I'm going to take the 220 Trophy for another test drive, chat things through with the salesman and if it all works out will hopefully be looking to place an order in February!

Plenty of time for it to get built, ready for a day on track at CSF18! :grinning:
Thats brilliant news Rob, i look forward to seeing it and maybe book a trackday somewhere before CS18.

Cheers Rich I'll keep you posted. From the time of ordering it's supposedly a 3 month build time! That's going to drag I just know it! 😂

Ideally I will try and get some track time in before Blyton and maybe a weekend drive on some lovely Welsh roads!

I absolutely get this. I am totally over having old cars for daily duties. Having leased for a year, although it does cost more, it's just so nice knowing that you can jump in, everything will work and you don't have to think about it. Hassle free motoring is where it's at. Didn't go lease this time, but went with something a couple of years old with low miles. I look on forums like retro rides and see people driving 20 year old cars every day and I just find myself thinking "Why are you bothering?" Give me reliability, comfort, bluetooth and climate control all day long

Saying that, at some point I am probably going to end up having to go back to something a bit older in order to free up some cash. Am dreading it 😂

Just don't get tempted to start fiddling :)

Quote to the girlfriend = I will not be touching this car as it is new and has a three year warranty .......................................
