RS - Feel the Need

Should give this one death from day 1 and see if it makes any difference power wise compared to doing it gently.

Imagine the graphs....

I am going to go with the datalog every single rpm and mile from day one with this one. Annoyingly I'll have to collect it during work time so I won't be able to get everything wired in until I get home on on whatever evening it is this week. Missing the first 15 miles upsets me. At least its first sip of fuel will be 99 RON and not whatever they put in them at the factory.

As for kicking it in the balls? I can't decide. I want this one to last yet I do just want to get in and launch it from the off...but I I believe it could last, and with my ownership being so public now that makes me think I should gently stroke it into life just like I did last time.

Im feeling the need mark

And I'm feeling the pain. Can a mod merge this thread with this one https://www.cliosport.net/threads/my-focus-rs-needs-a-new-engine.813838/ and this one https://www.cliosport.net/threads/rs-engine-update-are-they-all-going-to-fail.813984/ and re-title it to "RS need!" please?

You could have it towed to your house from the dealer ;)

You could even hire your own pickup to do it. Think it's about £150 a day last time I looked. Would undoubtedly be cheaper to pay a local recovery service to do it for you though.

Regarding running in, it's not about kicking it's balls in. But not being a fairy with it from the get go. They say it's the first 25 miles of a new engine that are the main ones. I've seen a few vids online that backup the hypothesis that running an engine hard from the get go is the way to go. Literally rolling a bike off the forecourt and then doing a high speed blast in the first 5 mins. That same bike was running well a year later and looked fast as f**k (although most bikes look FaF)

But equally it's your car. And I totally see your point about adhering to manufacturer specs since your ownership is so public.. however if it turned out the replacement engines were duds too, I very much doubt you'd have any problems warranty wise.

I don’t know if I’d have the balls to do that to a car I owned.

However

I have a lease Megane and I’ve not been that gentle with it since I got it and it runs brilliantly. Feels like it has more power than the book figures anyway

I like Marks threads, they have taken time and thought and they might help other people too, which in their own right deserve a thread of their own.

So have they offered a fix for the engine or just old for new and potentially more problems down the road.?

Old for new but the new has multiple revisions.

I must admit mark, I would like to see a R&R readout from the “revised engine”.

Something says to me there is a potential loss in power lingering to help with preservation!

If i’d commited myself to owning a flagship premium car that needed an engine change 8k in then i’d be more inclined to make sure i thrashed the next one.

These engines are allegedly bench tested? One way to find out.

Fails again?

You’ll love Golf R ownership. Stage 1 R’s with DSG make 60 in 3.9s.

It's meant to have enough revisions to make them properly watertight. Time will tell if they've got that right. There's meant to be a Feb 18 recall coming along to address for all owners so I'd seriosly doubt if they're about to commit to that project that they still haven't ironed out the bugs.

The annoying thing is I don't think we'll ever know the root cause nor the true fix for it!

This is one of the reasons I'm so keen to get back there...I too have similar doubts. Jan will be the earliest I can manage - it would be nice to get it done before Ford start rolling out the recall.

Bench tested? Nope, not as far as I'm aware, not even slightly.

Love the Golf R? I really wouldn't, I'd nod off quicker than I do in the Kuga.

You’re right, the good thing about the Focus is everyone gets to experience the sense of occasion. By the time it has its 7th engine every apprentice mechanic will be able to tell their grand children how good they are.

You’re famous!

Good to see Ford publicly acknowledging there is a fault and that they’re going to fix all of them.

I'm really not and I have zero desire to be so.

As for the article, it's actually nothing new at all...they've just cobbled together some old news and, for reasons unknown to me, have chosen to reference my specific video. It's generated a bit of online debate though...and a lot of brand fanboys slagging off each other's marques.

Probably because someone at Autocar is subscribed to your channel, or one of their friends is, and away it goes. Your videos are also unusually calm, clear and informative, so if you were going to pick one to quote it’s a good one.

IMO it’s a rather lazy, sorry excuse for journalism but every outlet is at it these days, even the BBC with their “we pulled together a bunch of random comments from Twitter about this, because social media” reporting style.

So this happened a few hours ago...

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/ford-focus-rs-engine-problem-confirmed-cause-white-smoke

It had nothing to do with me! I'm only aware of it because someone posted it in a comment on one of my recent videos...I'm enjoying watching the spike in views/subscribers though LOL
Fame and fortune are just around the corner. And pussy, just think of the pussy!
Seriously did they pick your video because there's no others on yt that are reporting on an engine replacement or is yours the most restrained and logical one out there?
I'm glad to hear that your dealer have managed the engine swap OK and in a timely fashion, hopefully it's a good one they've fitted. [emoji106]

Or gets ridiculed online for buying a lemon, and not only a lemon an expensive lemon with a Ford badge.

Can't be a lemon as when it works it's an incredible car. Proved even more so in the recent inclement weather.

Mine's 13.6k miles and not missed a beat.

Nope, no back doors. I like the slightly chavvy but still classy (in my colour) RS just fine.

It's also now been posted on an Australian petrol head site in a "here's some news that really isn't news, but someone else reported on it as if it is news, so maybe it actually is news, so here's some news" crap regurgitating journalism kind of way.

Well Mark, mine potentially on the way as well!

Coolant being lost etc.

Time for a call to ford then!

@c4pob you’re next.

Probably worse to have an original engine than a changed revised one at this point.! @Dan how many miles are you on?
Thanks for jinxing me! No idea what will be better as don't know what the route cause of the issue is. Fingers crossed it stays fine till the recall, certainly won't stop me using it (albeit, I'm not using it much now). @Dan, sorry to hear. How many miles have you done and what was the build date?

It’s just ticked over 5k miles.

Build time was around December 16 roughly.
