Can it totally change by itself now? Last time I read about it you had to signal and then grip the wheel for it to manourver (basically as you showed in your video) but you described it as if it can do it totally solo now.

One killed a guy in the US didn't it? Drove him under a truck? Impressive, but not sure the technology is mature enough to be encouraging people to let go of the wheel yet, especially with the number of mongs on the road.
They do seem to be chucking a lot of free stuff at people at the moment, but I suspect that will disappear as they become more established and the drive for profit takes over. They are upsetting the old guard though and that's no bad thing. The car industry is so stuck in its ways it's unbelievable.

I seem to recall it self cancelled several times because it was struggling, and eventually it got confused by the spray coming off the truck and thought the lane was empty.

It depends on the conditions. Lane changing really is very 'over sensitive'. If you are in the middle of 3 lanes overtaking a lorry and want to pull in straight away, it will ask to hold the wheel. If you wait a few seconds and the lorry is no longer visible to the cars sensors, it will do it automatically.
Autopilot just steering and keeping up with the traffic/slowing down etc is amazing for me as most of my journey on the way home is on the M1 which is usually 18 miles of stop stop at very low speeds. I can just turn it on when I get onto the M1 and it will drive perfectly without me having to do anymore than a simple touch of the wheel to let the car know i'm not asleep to keep it going.
The lane change bit is pointless but it comes into its own purely because if I move the car into the other lane, it will cancel autopilot every time. That's the only reason I like it.

That is 100% the drivers fault. Autopilot is nothing more than an aid assist.
People try to show that it can drive itself etc when in reality it's just a slightly more advanced cruise control.

Calm down dear, it was a turn of phrase. Besides, as I recall, it was the car that drove under a truck, not the person in it. Should he have been paying more attention? Abso-f**king-lutely but, as I posted above, it makes me question whether the tech is r****d proof yet.
As I recall, Tesla made changes as a result. The guy was obviously being a tard but Tesla obviously felt the tech wasn't as good as it could have been.

I get the sentiments on both sides, too many people talk about it as if it's a real autopilot which can only confuse non-car people that are listening. The Tesla crowd talk about their cars being an update away from being able to drive to a friend's house on its own, pick them up and bring them to you. Or taking you to work and then pimping itself out to Uber for some extra income.
The more likely reality is that we're a long way off that sort of thing. Doesn't detract from how cool autonomous driving mode is for motorway commutes. I'm doing a 70 mile one way commute from Brighton to Maidenhead at the moment and I'd genuinely buy a Tesla if it was going to be a long term deal (and if I had a driveway I could charge it on lol)

I didn't spec the option for full autonomous driving because I can't see it happening for a very long time.
How will it react at roundabouts? Yeh fine if it's a big main roundabout with road markings everywhere but what about small ones or even magic ones with 6 mini roundabouts around one big one with 3/4 directions of traffic for each one!
I get traffic lights, the cars can read the lights etc but I genuinely do not see it being a reality for way past the life of this particular car.

Cars in general aren’t r****d proof yet to be fair.
I think that’s what Tesla is aiming for. But the technology to actually remove the retards from the equation is a while away.

Quite. The problem with this is that it is just another way that the driver can pay less attention. While he should focus on the road ahead and be ready to take control, how many mongs are going to pay next to no attention and mess with the iPad thing? Calling it Autopilot probably wasn't the best idea really, as it just gives people a false sense of security about it's abilities.
The car industry is in a strange place I think. They harp on relentlessly about safety, but keep introducing technology that suggests that you don't need to pay attention and then add big touch screens that make it even easier to become distracted.
Progress is a funny old thing.

Black and decker aren’t going to hold their hands up and say ‘sorry, our bad’ when some dick head tries to juggle their chainsaws and lops his arm off.
It might be poor naming of the feature or just too much too soon, because people are just retarded. I can’t believe there’s not been more crashes in cars with ‘city braking’ because of idiots not looking what’s happening because ‘oh the car will do it for me’

That's it. Features like this are great for responsible drivers. The problem is, most drivers are just not even close to responsible. If they were as common as a Fiesta, I do have to wonder how many incidents there would be.
