Westfield part 2 - Track Harder

Got to say, the K-series that's powered the Lotus 340R I've driven a few times has been bomb-proof. It had the extra Lotus approved package that took it to around 190bhp and has been given death everywhere its been.

It makes a rotary engine sound smooth on idle - it really is that lumpy. But once opened up, its raw, loud and screamy - exactly the type of engine you want in a car like that.

I would be stunned if that 340R isn't running a modified head gasket and steel dowls ? as i know a fair few 340r owners from when they were new and non of the VHPD engines (the 190) in any car it was put in didn't have issues

and the 190 idiles way nicer than the sport 160 lump .

Bloody hell - that 160 lump must sound like a waste disposal chomping on spanners!

You're probably right on the head gasket and other bits - I don't actually know myself. I do know that having it screaming away just several inches from the back of your head is intoxicating. The brap-baaarp from the exhaust was a nice balance of noise and 'function' too. Iirc, that was a Janspeed system on that?

yep Janspeed made the original sports exhausts for the 160 and 190 cars ,

as for Idle

7 minutes in and thats running emerald ECU and has the verinier pulleys fitted to smooth it out a bit ...... I know as thats my old car , (not with me in the video i hasten to add ) and mine is the first comment explaining why it was running harder suspension and how it had been set up .

Slight update on my trailer I bought from the Pikey's.

When the wheel came off it totally fucked the axle and mounts. So I've stripped it all off and had a new axle made which should come this week. I hope.

You can see where the baring melted to the stud axle...

Old axle off. (Its hard to see but the mount has twisted too

Fuel system stripped out and everything else has had new put fuel lines in place. Just waiting on a new set of pre and post pump filters.

Pump and tank set up. Still has fuel in hence me looping the lines off.

New fuel filters are here. Pre and post pump ones. It was good to see my car already had a pre pump filter fitted. Most Westfield's never have them fitted and then end up eating fuel pumps.

You've been a busy boy, Steven.

Mrs not putting out any more ? :kissingheart:

Bit of a shame - but assume it's reversible...?
Tow bar is a hidden one. Taking it back off it only a 60 min job.

Some 315cc injectors just turned up. They replace the 21 year old 210cc one which have to run at about 120% duty cycle at full throttle! Spray pattern on these should allow a better idle and a bit more torque too.

Further update

New removable boss fitted to the steering wheel for 2 reasons:
A) I can get in....
B) Brings the wheel into a nicer driving position

Also.....

My new axle from Germany is here for my trailer I bought from the Gypos! Yay

Once all that is done the car and the trailer will be ready to go down to Emerald for a re map. Having the new injectors fitted, the bodies serviced and the rev limit lowered to 8000rpm to up the longevity of the engine.

Mapping booked for the 25th of October.

The story before I had this car was such. It had two owners, the guy who built and raced it and a guy who bought it off the guy who raced it....

Well the second guy thought he'd do the car up a bit, he had it painted, bought a new steering wheel etc etc. He also had the cambelt changed. Sadly the guys who did it were obviously a bit s**t.

Nail polish used as timing marks. The inlet cam is 8 degrees out from where it should be. No wonder it runs terribly!

Mapping day.

First up was the cam timing. Turns out the exhaust cam was 8 degrees out.

We did a compression test after that just in case. All was good though!

Next up my 315cc injectors were first flow tested and then fitted.

Car all strapped up for mapping.

22405882_10155764712552579_8463507438898133135_n.jpg

Car running on the rollers, we found quite a few issues with the map. It was lean all over the place. Made cool flames though.

22308631_10155764712652579_5975124657146040328_n.jpg

Then a few power runs. In its old spec it made 200bhp @ 8200 and 144lb/ft at 5100. I wanted the rev limit lowering as I'm going to use the car for track and not for sprints. New figures are 199.1 (lol)bhp @ 7600 and 151lb/ft at 5800. Lovely flat torque curve and breaking the 150lb/ft on a 1.8K is pretty good.

In short it goes like f**k.

Thats not bad for a k , but dave knows his stuff as we replaced the lotus ecu on our last elise with emerald

Dave and Dave breathed on that one and it was quick

Wait till you find a need for 250bhp ;-) then you will need those 9" rears

Dave doesn't map any more sadly. He hangs about a bit though. He didn't think we'd see over 190 with a 7800 rev limit.

They did say the lotus lot would buy my engine for about the same money they could sell me a 260bhp 2.3 Duratec for. So thats an option in the future.

Snetterton was a blast. I've blown the seal on the gearbox and the seal on the diff though. Something to do over winter.

needs bigger breathers by the sound if it's popping seals out,
It was 4 years since it was last used in anger. Since then it'd done 36 miles. Picking Snetterton where on Bentley straight it was riding the rev limiter in 5th all the way down probably wasn't the best place to break it back in....

Final session from Snett. Managed a 2:14.5 which I'm happy with.
