Mini Cooper s

  535d / t5 caravelle
picked the Mini Cooper s up last night, and what a cracking little car it is, it's only done 64k, has full service history, from main dealers/lohen/mad4minis, receipts for all the work carried out adding upto thousands ( upto 2k some, eye watering for me ) imo it's an immaculate car for 12 years old, interiors practically as new, back seats look, like they've never been sat it, bodyworks superb blah blah blah...............................................sorry got carried away, thought I was doing a for sale add then.

Initial thoughts are, clutch is heavy, steering is "nice" and heavy, you feel very low down in it, it handles great, it whines, it goes well, It's hard to judge how quick it is tbh, doesn't feel rapid like the r26 did, its a lot more progressive, although pick up is instant.

It feels like im going to drive the car, not it drive me if that makes sense, driving it is going to be a bit of a drama / event, which is exactly what I wanted seens as I'm going to be doing very little miles in it, (not sure the Mrs will agree ) it feels great, like a go kart! I think I will have that buzz back from driving a Clio that the r26 never really gave. ( possibly even more so, dare I say it )

Oh and some pilock stuck the speedo in the centre of the dashboard so you nearly crash every time you look at it.

It seems very solid and well built, everything works as it should, it's been looked after with nice mods, there's 7.5k in receipts from lohen alone, so all in all I'm very happy!

So the important bits, 221.4 bhp ( the .4 makes all the difference )

Spec:

Engine

MSD coilpack
NGK iridium spark plugs
JCW air box / ITG filter
Full Miltek exhaust
Airtec top mount intercooler
15% reduced pulley
Red Silicon hose kit

Transmission

Quaife ATB differential LSD
6 paddle organic helix clutch
TTV lightened flywheel
2% lightened crank pulley

Suspension/steering

Eibach prokit springs 35mm
Powerflex handling pack
M7 front strut brace
Cabrio front braces ( powder coated red )
Vibra technics lower engine mount

Wheels/brakes

Speedline Turini 17 x 7 et35
Khumo ecsta 205/45/17
Front - K sport 8 pot 330mm big brake kit & ferodo ds22500 pads
Rear - grooved discs & ebc yellowstuff pads
Castrol dot 4 brake fluid

Bodywork

Mini aero front bumper
Genuine carbon fibre bonnet scoop
Genuine carbon fibre boot handle
US spec rear bumper trims
Stubby Ariel
Black wrapped light surrounds

Interior

Half leather
Genuine carbon fibre JCW gear knob
Alpine head unit

Think that's about it, it was advertised with a 17% pulley, my receipts show a 15%, so unless proven otherwise we'll say it's a 15% pulley, going to contact the previous owner to see if he has any input.

Plans are to enjoy it and get used to it, I'm not one for splashing out on modifying cars, I like to get them already done, hence why I got this.................

But!

1. Coilovers, still deciding which ones, as much bad press you see about springs, no complaints so far tbh. Maybe once it's on coilovers I'll realise.

Meister
St xta
Bc racing

2. Rear control arms
3. Rear anti roll bar
4. Adjustable drop links ( maybe )
5. Wheel Spacers
6. 1320 catcams camshaft
7. Injectors????

Suspension mods first then onto engine ( eventually )

It will be a very slow progress, but i like to keep a log in here, if it's screaming out for anything obvious removing/adding fire away, totally new to minis.

Pics to follow

Cheers

Sounds like a good buy!
Couple of things for you to consider:
1. Scanguage will give you a speedo reading (if you dont have one), ive got mine on top of the dash in the far right corner
2. Without a cam, you wont have 221bhp, more like 200.
3. Meister R's are epic for the money that they cost

Why am I getting the lust for a mini, love the R53s at the moment. I'm lusting after a 182 again, but after having 2 I want something else and these appear an awesome alternative.

No pics though?

you have a digital speedo in the rev counter also :) glad your happy bud

Yeah I clocked when I was nearly home after buying it lol, oh and now the mrs and kids have been in it, it now tells me what the outside temperature is, how do I change it back?

ill look into the scangauge, takes a bit of getting used to having the speedo in the centre of the dash.

With regards to the power output, I have a print out from lohen, I'll attach it in a sec, I also managed to find an old owner on minitorque, with a thread after taking it to lohen for some work and a power run, again ill attach that, you'll see on the link there seems to be a boost leak which explains the inconsistent power runs, I also have a receipt for the car going back to lohen to fix the boost leak after, see what you make of it, I'll be honest I'm not mechanical in anyway, so I can only go off what I read/get told

I've seen various power outputs with similar mods ranging from 200 bhp to 225 ish on minitorque, maybe it's just a "good one"?

Meister are high on the list, I know springs are slated, but it handles like a go kart, coilovers must be amazing on them.

Finally the pics have landed! I drove a standard mcs years ago, think I had my Clio 16v at the time, I was not impressed tbh, I'm so glad I went for this over a Clio, I've had Clio's most of my driving life, but I've missed the great feel they give recently, this thing more than makes up for it, took it to the shops last night for some milk ( as you do ) down an A road through a few round abouts, absolutely love it, its like being in a go kart ha ha!

Would recommend a modded one 100%

Looks great! I still love mine 4 years on.

That's a GP rear bumper trim btw, with US side markers  Expensive bit of plastic.
The driving experience has more than exceeded my expectations, love it!

Cheers for the info, I was doing some routing about on the forums last night, and noticed a previous owner had pm'd someone about some gp bits, didn't know if they where on it or not lol.

I'll adjust spec [emoji41]

Oh, are the windows supposed to drop an inch and then go back up when you open/shut the doors?

That's really nice other than the dark rear lights!

How much do these go for??

Cheers, I need to look into what other options I have for rear lights, that can be tonights job, price wise anywhere on 3 to 5.5k from what be seen, this was up for £5250 I knocked a decent lump off.

I like this

Looks great, personally i r4eally like how the car sits on those wheels, and overall i think it looks great in that colour too!

My family (mum in particular) has had Minis for as long as I've been alive, and if you want to relocate the speedo with OEM parts, look for a dual guage cluster off of a car with Sat nav, if i remember correctly the swap is nearly plug and play (although we have only ever bought minis with the sat navc, so i dont have first hand knowledge as to whether this is correct or not).

Cheers, just had a google at what you said and it looks like your right, it is pretty much a plug and play job, it doesn't bother me enough to change, think it's just I'm not used to it, cheers for the heads up:up:

Lights.

whats the crack with the tail lights, do they do any decent factory ones that are worth swapping over to? Any in red? Any suggestions that suit dark silver best?

My current ones have that fly eye tint s**t on, I'm guessing standard would look better to start with? Although I'd like something different tbh.

Fronts are same actually, they also have fly eye tint on, they look alright though, Any usual upgrades for the headlights? I like the dark tinted style.

@bill how to you find the springs? crashy or ok as ive just put them on the front and have the rears to do. got them cheapo so will do for now

Well after reading everywhere that its coilovers or nothing on the mini, I was expecting it to be shocking tbh, to me it handles brilliantly, and the rides not crashy, just nice and firm, I think it feels great tbh, can't wait to see what it's like on coilovers!

I've only driven around 150 miles in it, mixture of motorway and A and B roads, not once have I thought it's a s**t ride, quite the opposite in fact. I can't stop banging on about it lol.

I've already started saving for coilovers as I want it lower, and to handle the best it can within my budget. I'm sure this will be a step up again though.
