The Wii U Thread

  UR R26R.5, VW Golf R
So, who has a Wii U?

Have to say I'm tempted. Mario Kart 8 looks fantastic and getting great reviews. Same with Mario Mario 3D World, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3 etc. Those 4 games alone will offer months of gaming. Just a shame they're so expensive to buy.

Also, this is brilliantly amusing. It focuses on Luigi's death stare from Mario Kart 8:

  A SHED!
You know i wish Nintendo would return to serious gaming. I love Wii games, haven't play the wii u. Does it have metroid? Loved that game.

I've got one, massively overpaid for it when it first came out and it sat doing next to nothing for a while. Now however, it is
really coming alive, Mario Bros, Mario 3D, Mario Kart, Rayman Legends, Zelda are all great games, easily played more than my Xbox One. You can also get the console for a fair price thesedays, i never really rated the Wii that much, graphics were always lacking but this is definitely improved on the Wii U.

I am tempted but I have so many games on the 360 and One it will probably gather dust. Love the original Wii for family gaming. Will have a look today...

I have to admit I was tempted to pick one up for the Monster Hunter franchise, loved that game when I had it on my PSP years ago. I just cant justify a console for 1 or 2 titles though.

Couldn't you turn your wii u into a normal console by buying a normal joypad and playing the games like normal gaming.

Feck playing Mario otherwise. Remember the n64 pad, was awesome!

Mario Kart 8 is excellent - really good fun online too.

I've got a Wii U pro controller which I use for most games although the standard pad is actually very comfortable and I actually prefer it sometimes.

It's getting a lot more use than the xbox one is at the moment anyway! I've also been revisiting some of the old wii games I never played - pick most of them up dirt cheap. As much as I like smash bros I'm more excited about this official gamecube pad adaptor - I just hope they enable it for use on games like Mario Kart!

Have they finally added HDMI support now? One of the worse things about the original Wii imo - on any screen larger than 40", the lack of clarity looked genuinely awful.

Just bought another having sold my first one a few months after launch. I got the Mario Kart 8 pack, downloaded Windwaker for free and have bought Mario 3D World. Also picked up Zombie U for £6 because why not.

Oh yeah and bought the larger capacity gamepad battery as I remember how p*ss poor the packaged battery is. Disgraceful that they don't put the larger battery in it by default.

I see something's have not changed. It still has a piece of sh*t operating system that causes the Wii U to choke to death. I mean it looks like the 3DS operating system but just going into settings and back to the home screen takes an age. It is an absolute embarrassment compared to a 360 or PS3 which are slick and smooth as you navigate the OS.

Oh yeah and setting it up for the first time hasn't improved either. It makes you go through the pain of entering all your club Nintendo account details only to then tell you that f**k you because it can't connect the account until you have done a system update and then you will have to enter it all again.

Anyway Mario Kart is very impressive. I mean Forza 5 for example didn't wow me with its graphics but Mario Kart did. I couldn't believe how awesome it looks. Plays well too but waiting for my brother or nephew to come round and play it with me.

As for HDMI - if you want 5.1 you will need a home cinema with HDMI connections and support for LPCM because it has no optical port and doesn't do DD.

Picked up the Mario Kart 8 bundle and downloaded Wind Waker HD as my free game. I'm very impressed with the whole package. Great to be once again in a position to enjoy Nintendo games. I was always a massive fan, but somehow lost my mojo since retiring the GameCube.

I hope that the Mario Kart 8 promotion has the desired effect for them. They deserve success.

Ooooo! Didn't know a new Zelda was being released!

Ocarina of time was amazing! I might look into one if these
Nintendo games were always so enjoyable IMO

Funnily enough I have been playing a bit of Ocarina of Time this afternoon under a Mac emulator. Looks disastrously dated, but still has its charm.

Nintendo FTW!

I purchased it for GameCube a couple of years back off eBay
It was a limited edition with wind waker
Loved playing through it again

As you're a Nintendo fan, I'd be very surprised if you were disappointed with the Wii U. It's a really nice console. Compact, plenty powerful for the types of games you'll enjoy, and the controller is pretty neat.

I also purchased a Wii U Pro controller, but to be honest I doubt I'll use it that much, as the standard one is real good. Personally I haven't yet experienced any battery-life issues with it. I think my biggest session has been about 4 hours of Mario Kart 8, and it held up ok. I just dock it when not in use. Seems good.

I still think mario kart double dash on the GameCube was a good game

Picked one of these up two days ago. Loving it so far. Smashing Mario Kart. Will give Zelda a spin this evening

Pro controller has ridiculously good battery life - I've not had to recharge it since I bought it!

  Ibiza FR Edition
Bought mine back in February last year and have hardly touched it, but Mario Kart 8 is amazing so I've been playing that a lot recently so its getting its first use of the year!

I'm thinking of getting one, just concerned as to how often I will use - e.g. how many games will support it such as the new Zelda etc.

I bought the long life battery for the game pad which is like twice the size but after going through a few charge cycles are am extremely disappointed.

I get about 3 hours out of it on Windwaker before the light starts flashing. Absolutely ridiculous. Should add that is over the course of a week. Could be the pad is draining the battery heavily when turned off.

But like I charged it a week ago, played for 2 hours on Tuesday after which one bar had disappeared from the battery display. Played for about an hour yesterday and the warning light started!

I've heard Mario Kart 8 is the best of the series.

I've had every Nintendo console since the Snes and the N64 and Gamecube games are the ones I look back at more than any other console.

I've played a few demos and the gameplay is there, its just it carries the classic Nintendo cartoonish graphics which scare at lot gamers off. I'd love to get one but I fear it may be a waste of money.

Toypop, do you not keep the controller in its dock when not in use? I do, and still haven't yet had a game session interrupted by low battery power. Although to be honest I couldn't ever see me playing a game for 4+ hours straight without taking a break.

Well I figured that would make it's life worse keeping it plugged in all the time?

What type of battery is it?

It's surely not li-ion?

I figured it would be something cheaper with a memory like nimh or I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to drag some old nicads out of a museum somewhere!

  Yaris Hybrid
Feck me if it isn't li-ion! I'd put the box out in the shed but after some Googling I found it.

If I can find somewhere tidy/concealed to put the dock I will keep it out permanently. I go to a lot of trouble to hide all my cables and keep things really tidy so don't want some sh*tty plastic dock and cable sitting around!

As far as I know the pro controller uses pretty much every game - it works with all of mine and any I've considered buying.

I like the original controller to, to be honest, the pro is great for taking to my mates though.

And yeah keep your pad docked - won't do it any harm!

I got my free Zelda Windwaker game yesterday so had a quick blast on that. Love how you can transfer from TV to the gamepad screen like a handheld at any time. Very cool; just a shame you have to have the console on at all times to do this, but it means you can watch TV at the same time by just changing the source.

Need to get myself a Pro Controller now. Although the Gamepad is very good, it's a bit bulky and I'm sure the controller would be better for certain games.

  Yaris Hybrid
I'm really loving Windwaker HD.

I am sure I detected a bit of slow down in places though and I find the controls very frustrating compared to newer games like Twilight Princess.

But that is all just nitpicking, it is pretty much the only game I've played the past two weeks.

Yeah Windwaker HD is little awkward to control at times, and does sometimes dip below 60fps, but it feels more like a porting optimisation thing, rather than the console lacking power.

The Pro controller is great. I would even say it's more comfortable to use than the Xbox pad. I'm now glad I bought it, as we've been using it for co-op in Super Mario 3D World, which incidentally is FANTASTIC!

Totally loving the Wii U. Any time I fancy a session, my PC and PS3 now hardly get a look. Nintendo games are just more fun!

The Wii U platform has totally changed over recent months, following release it was much like the Xbox One (lacking decent games) but its definitely come into its own now.

Holy thread bump!

Recently picked a cheap bundle up from the Facebook Marketplace to have a mess around with.

I got:
32gb Premium console
Pro Controller
Mario Kart 8
Yoshi's Woolen World
Super Mario 3D World
New Super Mario Bros
Zelda Twilight Princess
Zelda Windwaker

Have to say I'm absolutely loving it at the moment - great fun! Such an underrated console IMO.

Seems to be a good time to pick up the cheap bundles with people upgrading to the Switch atm. I can see prices rising!
