Project: BMW E21.

My 1977 (E21) BMW 316.

I've been looking at E30's for a while now, and I had seen a few that I fancied when a mate of mine sent me a message saying he had seen something much cooler than an E30.

I had no idea what he was on about and was a little sceptical at first. Anyway, as soon as he showed me the photos I knew I had to go and see it.

I decided that I can get an E30 any time, and that something this rare, has to be snapped up really.

I've got no idea where this project will go, but as a starter, I'm going to restore the bodywork. Coilovers, new engines and things like that are all well and good, but it's a pretty decent example and I'm kind of reluctant to hack away at it like there is no tomorrow. It's almost all original, and has only done 47,000 miles in it's 35 year life.

I went down to my dads house today and got some photos while I was there :)

I'm sure it will divide opinion, but I love it. Uber cool cruiser

lol, The M10 takes well to mods but I'd have wanted the straight 6 in there so I'd be looking at a 323 instead.

That said I love an E21, decent wheels, sensible dose of lowering and stance and a colour change and you'll have a cool looking bit of retro metal on your hands.

Money no object, I would have a 323 with the 5 speed dogbox, but they go for heavy money and they make rocking horse s**t look common :(

Bloke I worked with had one (323 + dog box), in a hideous pale metallic green colour, massive dent in the rear 1/4 panel and a f**ked clutch but it was a proper workhorse, fairly fast and went sideways without a huge amount of provocation. Highly entertaining even as a passenger.

That looks properly f*cking cool. Running it through winter?

Will be keeping a close eye on this.

Edit: Have you sold the RB yet mate?

  Petrol Blue 182.
You don't know how jelous I am of this project! I've been looking at E21's from afar for ages, looking at doing something similar!

TBF its a proper lol car. The roll you get round corners is mental, its slow, old, brown, has the worst seatbelts in the world but its unbelievably awesome. Even as a passenger its great.

Needs more power and some healthly lows. If Ed doesn't drop this, I'll buy it off him and give it the life it deserves.

It HAS to be low with some nice wheels. It's only acceptable keeping it standard if you're over 50 and wear fleeces and hiking boots as general day to day wear.

I had a 320i back in the day. The back end looked identical to that (iirc) but the front end didn't.

It was a 1980 X plate. I've no idea what Exx that would be.

Cool car though, I approve.

Cheers for the comments guys :)

There will be no colour change, I love Topazbraun metallic and it'll be staying :)

Stance is a maybe, but its a reasonably likely :)

Eddie I am so happy that you've ended up with this cant wait to see it in the flesh ad cant wait to see how it ends up! I know it'll be ace!

Aye, they just fold up on the seat, so the fatter you are, the safer you are!

The drive to Sandbach yesterday was amazing, sunny day, classic BM, admiring looks all over the place

Something needs doing with the suspension, it borders on scary when you turn at anything above 40mph!

It'll have something done to it, I doubt I'll be able to resist!

Went out tonight, the rain soaked roundabouts proved playful :)

Yeah Trafford, tbf mate, it doesn't really go 'sideways' more of a little 'step'.

I need to take you for a spin in it tbh, I think you'll love it's uber retro-ness :)

Yeah, whatever happens to it, I'll look to be doing it "properly".

I don't want to start hacking and cutting it to bits, hence why I've already started eying up rough E21's as potential donor cars so I can always return this to standard, as that would be the most important thing to me.
