Opinions on 1.2 16v clio

  2005 Clio 182
Facelift ones so 2001 onwards, I know I recently made a post about a classic mini swapping for one but it not being something for long distance makes it feel like a 50cc scooter :dapprove:

So classic mini aside forget I have one, what are your opinions on the 16v 1.2 clio!

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

If I was you I'd look at a Clio DCi. They're like £20 to tax, will do a genuine 55mpg and are a lot easier to drive than the 1.2's because they have so much extra torque.

If its long journeys your planning on doing then the benefits are even further enhanced.

Nothing wrong with 1.2 Clio's though, just make sure you get the dynamique spec.

If i had to, I'd go for a DCi instead, especially over a distance

Seems slightly nicer towards the 1.2 clio than on the other thread, my brother has a 1.2 dynamique and it just went through the mot needing 2 coils, 2 ball joints and an anti roll bar, oops :approve:

I got one, and tbh I think its all good. compared to other 1.2's in quick, polo's etc. Done a few trips to wales and back and its fine tapping along at 80. also it only sips petrol when on long trips on dual carriageways and motorwarys. around corners its great fun :). If I had to get another small car tomorrow i'd go for another 1.2 put it that way.

Yeah because I was going to get a 1.2 16v, put the cup 172 wheels on it and put coilovers on it to make it lower and stiffer :approve:

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

i have a 1.2 and i do alot of driving, (7000 miles in 5 months since i passed !) and its perfectly fine. i do motorway trips every weekend out to wales, about 80-90 miles, sitting at 70-80 the whole way and its great on fuel , use about 2 bars there and back, coming back is more uphill aswell, thats where the let down is, there is a long winding hill, and even if i build up my speed before the climb, half way up i have to be in 4th or sometimes 3rd to keep it above 60 !! apart from that, i love my clio and it is a great little car.
highly recommend it mate !

(mines for sale) ;)

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

Well to be honest there isn't much to dislike about 1.2's, I still say dci's are better but the 1.2 Dynamique is a cheap to run car with a miles better spec than its competitors at the time. They have electric windows & mirrors, cd player, auto lights and wipers, 'sports' seats (same as the 1*2), allow wheels etc. They're well specced for what is now a very cheap car.

They also handle reasonably for a supermini, far too much body roll for a sporty drive but they have plenty of grip and good brakes. They're reasonably economical, I used to average about 36-38mpg in mine around town, 40+ on the motorway.

That's about the best review I can give having now driven one for nearly 3 years, I did own mine for 2 years though so had plenty of experience with the 1.2's.

Hmm they do seem like good cars but my brother constantly complains that his is boring and is s**t... haha :dapprove:

Well to be fair it is a standard supermini with the lowest power engine in, soft suspension etc that is designed to be driven around town predominantly.

If you want a more sporty drive then get a Renaultsport Clio, but they cost more. Unfortunately like most things you can't have your cake and eat it.

Very true, as I said if I put the cup wheels on it, then on coil overs to make it stiffer and maybe the cliosport exhaust will make it a more fun car, due to it being stiffer and having a bit of noise? :)

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

If your going for the 1.2 get an 04 plate, came with the revised engine, so much less troublesome than the previous one.

Ahh that'll explain why the 04 plate onwards fetch a bit more money, other than the obvious newer car haha

im looking to put springs on mine as I cant seem to find coilovers under like £300 and I cant justify spending that much on one mod on a 1.2. but then again im earning jack s**t :p

You see that's the problems I have about the mini! I love my mini but they're not the most reliable so every little knock or rattle I'm thinking crap... money needed? ;)

The 172 exhaust won't fit on. There are plenty of aftermarket exhausts available for 1.2's though. Coilovers would firm up the ride significantly, I've never driven a coilovered 1.2 but believe they're much better than standard to drive.

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

changing the exhaut may give more "noise", but that is really all it will be

noise.

it's not a nice sounding engine.

Can tell I know sh*t all about clios!

My mate had a 1.2 16v with coilovers, cup wheels and an aftermarket exhaust stripped out the back, used to go quite well I thought!

I'm used to noise though, couldn't part with it after having a mini haha :D

my mate had a classic mini and in your situation he decided to put a motorbike engine in it i think. Turned it into a right pocket rocket haha

I would go for something like a motorbike engine or a VTEC but it cost's around £6000+ :dapprove:

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

maybe not then!

I really don't know what to do! My insurance runs out in just under 2 weeks on it so it's got me thinking do I want something newer that can actually do long trips and be reliable etc!

Re: Opinions on 1.2 16v clio's

I found that my 1.2 16V was a good wee car but just lacked power, obviously..

As above, get an 04 onwards though, I had a rake of problems with my 51 plate :l mostly electrical mysteries!!

if you do decide to change the mini and you're looking at 1.2's i'd say go clio tbh. or could look at fiesta's?

I've always thought the clio looked the nicest car by far, for the price as well! :approve:

And if you get a 1.2 you can always stick a sport grille and possibly bumpers and skirts if your that bothered :)

They can end up looking really good tbh

You see that was my plan, tidy 1.2 16v clio, 172 wheels, coil overs, then go for the front and rear bumper etc.. :approve:

Iv had mine for almost a year now and iv been pretty impressed with it. Its not the fastest car in the world, but its still quite fun on twisty roads and coilovers will probably make it better. As others have said try and get one with the revised engine. Iv had some trouble with my throttle body (only needed a clean tho) and electrical issues other than that its ran great and never missed a beat.

They do seem like nice little cars, the coilovers and cup parts will soon jazz it up a little though!

Just now to decide what to do!

i love my 1.2 dynamic its so slow but i dont care, it looks great because im slowly adding some subtle mods and it drives so smoothly. electric wipes and lights :D

I don't think you should drive a mini if you think your 1.2 clio is slow! ;)

they are rubbish on fuel and slow, un refined, noisey on the motorway, just generally horrible to drive.

dci65/80 any day of the week for the same/similar cash

I never found mine to be too bad on fuel... mpg was around 45 across a whole tank at the very lowest, most around 49 or so and I got 54 MPG out of one tank. Diesels cost a fair bit extra so I think you would have to do lots of miles to justify the extra expense.
