2004 clio dci 1.5 turning over but not starting or firing, please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  clio 1.5 dc
Was happily driving along and it stuttered abit so pulled over and it cut out and havent got it started since, engine turns over but nothing ! Flashing light on dash goes out when ign on so assuming its reading key ok ? tried changing the tdc sensor and nothing also tried a new fuel filter. Managed to get the lid off ecu box and all looks ok, also removed fuse holders/wiring and no signs of corrosion. Before cutting out Didnt notice engine warning lights appear and none seam to stay on when turning over. If the ecu failed would it have not thrown up the warning light ? any other areas i can check ? thanks

Diesel is easier if it turns over but doesnt start its got to be fuel related.

Check for the injectors leaking off (unplug the return lines see if any fuel comes out of them)

If fuels comming out when the cars turning over then would be a pump issue for low pressure possibly but I recon you wont get any fuel out when you unplug them

If when you unplug the injectors you get no fuel out (as I suspect will happen) (although do check each inectors pushing out about the same amount of fuel when turning over) then you have a pump/wiring issue. Check the loom which goes accross the front of the engine on a plastic bracket the loom wears.

IF you cannot see any loom issues then unless you know what your doinhg leave it and get it to a garage to get the codes fault found. If your feeling keen check the pump etc is getting the 12V it needs.

PS check the your TDC sensor and if you have your old fuel filter cut it open (its like a oil filter inside) see if theres any metal particles. PS its made of hard plastic so you'll need somehting sharp to cut it open with.

If as I suspect the cars turning over and your getting fuel out of the leak off from the injectors

Thanks for the response. If the problem did turn out to be be the fuel pump would it always leave a fault code ? I assumed a fault with the engine management would bring up the light on the dash ?

Faults don't have to show on the dash it depends what they are. If they wires/sensor are broken someetimes it doesn't show.

Ok thanks, didnt realise that. If the pump was faulty will a diagnostic check show this ?

No but will give some clues ie sensors not showing even pump pressure etc.

If its new /refurb pump its expensive as depending on the fault (usualy they eat themsselvees up) then you need new inectors and fuel lines and filter so a big bill. If my car eat its pump I'd have found out myself and got a second hand engine droped in but when you find that out it will be at a garage so worth seeing whay they say.

The pump does have a problem in that it needs the right volage so check your battery in this cold weather but since its turning over I wouldn't think so.

Check the relays for a bad connection though and your fuses.

Re: 2004 clio dci 1.5 turning over but not starting or firing, please help !!!!!!!!!!

Fuelling issues are common but it is also worth noting that the K9K engine sensor array is powered by a +5v reference supply. If one wire is damaged or if a fuse goes the engine will spin over but will not kick in to life as the array is like a set of Christmas tree lights; if one bulb goes they all go off!

Common faults are caused by the A/C pressure switch wiring which gets frayed by the aux belt.

Ideally though you should seek a CLIP session as it will give you so much more info on the fault, be it electrical or fuelling, than any generic reader will. DCi status codes are invaluable on CLIP IMO.

Ok guys some more info, had a mate plug a diagnostic tester in and its showed up faults df113, df137 and df117. I checked power to the pump and its around 12v, cut open old diesel filter and to my horror have found a small amount of metalic dust/filings in the bottom. I take it things arnt looking good ? will a diesel specialist be able to check the pump in situe to confirm whats looking like an expensive fix ?

open fuse box by n/s/f headlamp, theres 3 black or brown rectangular shaped relays, check them for corrosion, and then swap them around with each other. then try starting.

Re: 2004 clio dci 1.5 turning over but not starting or firing, please help !!!!!!!!!!

DF117 = Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit
DF113 = Misfire on cylinder 3
DF137 = Rail pressure regulation function

I'd check injector number 3 see if its leaking loads of fuel this would lead to the other issues as if injecotor 3 is leaking loads of fuel then the pump cannot get upto pressure as its not great at making low rpm high pressure enough to overcome a failed injector

metal in your filter though hummm pump time but check the above first. If its the inejctor which as died and its remains were caught by the filter and not got back to the pump (thats what the filters for) then you shoudl be ok.

Unplug the injector when cranking and check see how much fuel leaks out compaired to the others.

Have you found the problem?

You should be able to start it (put on the first gear than get some one to push your car and start it up like that.... supose to work!)
