Ooops, Forgot to check my MOT expiry date!

  ClioSport 182
Had the 182 for 10 months and assumed the MOT was done just before I bought it... Seems like I was mistaken, it expired in August! so I have been driving round for almost 4 months with no MOT, would this of been a serious thing if I was unlucky enough to be pulled over - BTW its booked in first thing tomorrow! :slap:

tip toes off to check mine

Driving without a valid MOT certificate is an offence under Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and, although conviction for this offence will not result in penalty points being placed on a driving licence, it carries a maximum fine of £1000. What's more, driving without a valid MOT certificate automatically invalidates the insurance policy

Done it myself, I got pulled over, 3days after it was out of date. Got £40 fine, was lucky he pulled me over else I could have been going on for a lot longer!

It's easily done mate, Unlucky about the fine! They should send out letters like that off road tax, I refuse to stick that MOT sticker anywhere it can be seen lol :race:

Sounds you could do with doing the monthly payment plan thing with services included. You get a reminder then.

iirc, i read somewhere that it doesnt invalidate your insurance due to a little loophole in the way your insurance policy is worded. so maximum fine of £1000 and a talking to i should imagine

It doesn't invalidate your insurance.

You can have no tax and no mot and in most cases the insurance will be valid. There are lots of little loopholes in insurance.

I actually went 6 months without realising once. I thought the dealer had mot'd and tax'd it but I forgot he only taxed it as the mot had 6 months left. Oooops.

Genuine mistake.

if a traffic officer stops you its possible for him to issue a prohibition notice if you don't have a current mot. moted 3 cars recently with prohibition notices on one guy had 2 tyres with cords exposed he had to have the car trailered to the garage to have new tyres and have it moted before he could take the documents in so he could drive his car.

good job you realised in time pal! im quite lucky because my local garage actually send a letter out a month before my MOT is due. obviously this is done so they get the business but least it reminds me ha!

national tyres and kwickfit both send out mot reminders.

national tyres mots are only £35 if booked on line some of the national centrers are even doing them at £30 e.g bristol and test 7days a week.

I hate the new MOT certificates, they look really cheap and crap compared with old version. Always get the bride to note ours down in her diary after a near-miss a few years ago.

because the mot is all online now the new mots are just recites for your records
The previous version were all computerised and recorded on central database too, they have just cheapened them up recently to something which looks sh*t LOL

I declare massive bullshit!

The £1,000 fine is theoretical; in real life you get a fixed penalty of £60. Also, a lack of MoT does not automatically invalidate your insurance at all, the insurance ombudsman has seen to that.

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind me posting as a new member with some info on this. I created a mot reminder website called motremind.me after forgetting my MOT a few times. I am a classic car enthusiast so have been posting on a few forums trying to help with mots.

Some useful links

https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/the-mot-test getting a MOT
https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status-vehicle check if your vehicle has a MOT
http://motremind.me

The dvla offer a SMS reminder but its £1.50. MOTRemind.me is a free MOT reminder service that sends you email MOT reminders that your vehicle's MOT is about to expire. It's totally free so you'll never forget your MOT again!

I hope this info is of some use to you all and sorry to moderators if this seems spammy :)
