You Can't Reprogram A Clio Key

  Renault Clio 172 Sport
Hi All,
I really hope this goes up as a Sticky cause ive just had to pay £118.30 to Renault for a new clip for my Blade (Key).

I recently had a faulty fob for my 172 so i took it apart and noticed the switch was lose, anyway i attempted to soulder it back on which i did, checked the car and it worked. Alarm went off and doors opened etc.
I went to get in the car the next night, put the key in the ignition and the car wouldnt start.
Top and bottom of it, i needed a new key. I bought one off ebay which was £9, had the car toed to Renault and told them i needed the key programming to the car. They called me later that day to tell me that the key wasnt programming.
To cut a long story short, after calling several auto electrician's they all told me that you cant re-use a key fob from another Renault. Once they have been reprogrammed thats it.
Thus I had to purchase a blank clip (which is the circuit board / imobiliser fob inside the plastic) which was £118.30 including programming.
If anyone has any other evidence to support this then I would love to hear it!.
Thanks All...
I hope no-body has to experience this costly issue!.

Sounds unlucky but did you ask here first as i'm sure someone would've told you this can't be done.
And apart from that £118 is actually quite cheap most garages seem to want around £160.
I had the same problem with the switch snapping on my key and after leaving it for two weeks it wouldn't start. AA man said it was a new key needed couldn't see why though. Superglued/soldered the bit back on and after much fiddling the car came back to life!

I cut my storey short but thats what i did, my fob was iffy so i took it apart and noticed that the alarm switch was loose so i souldered it back on but in the meanwhile i think i either left the battery out too long or the fact that I touched the Imobilizer transponder with the souldering iron. whoops.. The alarm / central locking was working but it wouldnt start the car. Sods law I only got one fob from the previous owner.

Its been said here for ages key cannot be resued as such.

Ebay sellers are doing well selling fobs which are usless.

I spoke to the woman who sold me it and she was well convinced you could. She was a posh woman which i didnt expect, she offered me a full refund.
She knows now it cant be done but im sure she will keep selling them!.

Ye of course she will under a new account no question.

I've heard of quite a few cars where they can be reprogramed so it's no wonder people think it's a cheap solution.
I did the same and actually ended up with a piece of solder against the coil next to the switch.Luckily it never seemed to do any damage.
The switch for the locking had been broken for a couple of weeks before I went away on holiday. And the battery was flat but I just felt that since the battery isn't meant to make any difference to the immobiliser function that it must be something else.
Weirdly enough Renault give a guide to reysnc the central locking(mine was working fine) and I tried this which roughly went put key in ignition and turn on then back and hold in central locking button and strangely the car then started working again!

Do you have that guide handy to set the central locking at all please? I want to try it with this dead Fob ive got just out of curiosity!.
Thanks,
Chris

I find it funny how a new Mercedes IR key/fob is £50 and Renault UK have the cheek to charge £120. If you order the fob from Renault France it's only about £50 and then probably £10 to program it if you don't know how to do it yourself...

Not to hand no it roughly went like I said though I had to try it a few times and tried what I mentioned above and also doing it with the central locking button on the key aswell as the centre consolde. If you want though I will find it again in the morning.
When you put the old key in does it just keep the red immobiliser light on?

My old man had his keys knicked. A merc one cost £120 while a nissan one is £150 from the dealers round theirs.

How much is a blank key + programming on its own then? Around the same price?

On my old fiesta zetec-s u used to be able to swap around the key chips to use for different ECU's, doesnt look like this is the same with Renaults then :(

Is it possible to get a key if you don't have any of the codes needed? I have the documents to prove its mine but no documents for central locking?
