Great thread. I'm trying to find a prepped car to start sprinting and hillclimbs a couple I've seen have the safety devices r017 cage and I was worried wouldn't pass MSA regs as front cage doesn't follow a pillar (dash dodge) but from reading above you are getting on competing fine in 2018. You wouldn't happen to know why would you please? Is it just dependent upon event/scrutineer on the day? Happy New Year in a few hours too.

Hi - do you know what Motorsports UK 'category' or actual class you are aiming to compete in? You have two basic choices -

1) Road Going Series Production
2) Modified Production

The roll cage rules are different for the two categories -

1) Road Going Series Prod - no roll cage actually required in this category, so the R017 cage will be fine.
2) Mod Prod - the Blue Book has the technical definitions you need to comply with (for a cage, HANS etc)

Motorsports UK blue book ….. https://www.motorsportuk.org/assets/bb2019completemed-res.pdf

Section S - page 343 defines the Regulations for Mod Prod (inc roll cage definitions)

Sorry its not a clearer answer

Perfect thanks for the clear answer I was looking to enter Road Going Classes looking at Harewood or Blyton but wanted a cage/harness personal safety side even though as you said could be entering in a completely stock car. I think I'd naively assumed cage rules were as per Mod Prod across the board. Thanks for the reply.

Just a quickie on harnesses ...... This type (2 shoulder straps on one mount) are a no no in any class

@GrahamV182 just read the entire thread. WOW. Really really like the progress and things you’ve done. I would love to get mine up to a standard/spec like this but I’m far to nervous to try and do a lot of what you’ve done! A cage and buckets is high on my list. Yours is a safety devices R017 yes?

Keep up the amazing work. I’ll evjoy reading!

January 2019 - Update

So after a sour ending to 2018 with the Valeo clutch giving way after around 1,000 miles, I saw this as a time to upgrade, I'll be honest I got a little carried away and had the following work done:

  • AST 4100's including Topmounts
  • Brand new Valeo clutch (more on this below)
  • Gearbox rebuilb by @NorthloopCup
  • TTV Lightened Flywheel
  • Ferodo DN1.11 front brake pads
  • Interstate Tyres
  • Scorpion Front Silencer
  • Gripper diff with a 4.53FD
  • Wishbones
  • Inner & Outer track rods
  • Clutch cable
  • Handbrake cable
  • Starter motor
  • Plus more!

As the car would need to be off the road for a while while @NorthloopCup rebuilt the gearbox I sent the car to Alex at AW Motorworks, I can't recommend him highly enough, excellent communication and just a nice bloke.

I dropped the car off at AW Motorworks early November 2018, in the hope of getting the car back for the last ever trackday at Rockingham on 8th December 2018. As the gearbox was being rebuilt this was quickly removed and sent off for Mark to work his magic, again I would highly recommend his services. ? While the gearbox was being rebuilt it was fitted with a Gripper diff and a 4.53FD alongside the new TTV lightened flywheel.

This was the state of the Valoe clutch after 1,000:

IMG_8119.JPG

The gearbox was rebuilt and collected however we were still awaiting on the HELIX clutch (nightmare to deal with) and unfortunately due to the delay I made the decision to fit another Valeo unit. I've since received the HELIX clutch kit so I may make the decision to fit this in the summer but we'll see.

A few pics while Mark was rebuilding:

IMG_8239.JPG
IMG_8240.JPG

I didn't initially plan on changing the suspension but I the GAZ items where only ever a short term fix so I got these fitted:

IMG_8190.JPG

IMG_8214.JPG

So as I was geting closer to the Rockingham track day Alex noticed this...

IMG_8281.JPG

CL RC5+'s after again around 1,000 miles! So I missed using the Clio at Rockingham which was a bit sad, however I've now fitted DN1.11s, due to the Clio not being ready I gave the Abarth its first go on track, I didn't enjoy it!

IMG_8330.JPG

Its no doubt a great car to drive on the road however on track it just felt so soft compared to the Clio, at least I got to drive it.

So after picking up the car from Alex I've only driven it once, and I will need to bed in the brakes and run the clutch/diff in which I'll hopefully do this weekend at which point I'll try and get some decent pics but from the one drive I have done made me realise how loud a plated diff is however it does make it feel like a new car along with all the new parts. The AST's, as expected are miles better than the GAZ.

Finally in prep for the 2019 season I purchased a set of Interstate Tyre based on the recommendation of @GrahamV182 so i look forward to giving them a go:

IMG_8352.JPG

One of the main reasons I wanted the Clio finished in 2018, is due to the fact my Wife is pregnant and we are expecting in Feb so I wanted it all ready to go, the last thing I wanted was to arrange a weekend racing and for it not to work! Which is why I got Alex to do so much work, but as said above I can't recommend him highly enough, he did so much work for me and was great to deal with.

I'll try and get a load of pics at the weekend as I want to give the AST's another coat of ACF50.

Finally this is now my current spec sheet:

Great update. I definitley take inspiration from what you’ve done with yours. Are we living a mirrored life btw? My wife is also expecting (March) but my plans are to continue with the Clio as far as the funds allow or until the priority becomes nappies and milk ?

Weird! This was my thinking, go a little crazy before baby arrives, as I know I won't be so flippant once they are here!

Children will change things for sure but what a joy it is! I have 4 so that probably explains some of my lack of upgrades etc.

Car spec looks awesome. Bet it’s a beast on track!

Great update .... Re the 'Race DNRT' tyres: did you go for 195s or 205s?

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the tyres. I personally don't think they are quite as good as Extremes - but great value for money.

Yeah, I can't imagine how 4 would change my life!

I've booked a track evening at Brands in April, which will probably be its first outing.

I've gone for 195, as I found 205's rubbed badly. I plan on fitting them to my TD Pro Race 1.2's and using them this year, save a little weight. I'll report back with progress.

UPDATE - April 2018

After spending all winter replacing most, if not all suspension parts the car was felling great and I was almost ready for 2019.

I had driven the car a few times to bed in the diff, gearbox & clutch. The new brake pads where spot on and I was due to fit my newly refurbished callipers. I even found a half decent place to do my alignment and got some decent pics:

IMG_0412.JPG

IMG_0413.JPG

I had a track evening booked for next Wednesday at Brands Hatch that was going to be the Clio's first outing however around 10 days ago I did this:

IMG_8802.JPG

I was out mountain biking and fell off and broke my hip.

It was pretty bad, I was in surgery for over 5 hours and according to the surgeon it was the worse one he had seen. I can't put any weight on my right leg for at least 3 months, which means no stairs, no driving and unable to get into my office at work! All of this with a 6 week old baby at home!

So this years sprints have pretty much been written off although I plan on using this time to get the Clio as perfect as I can.

Therefore I have the following planned over the new few months:

  1. Fit newly refurbished brake calipers
  2. Flush brake fluid with new MOTUL RBF 660
  3. Fit new injectors
  4. Flush coolant
  5. Fit new spark plugs
  6. Fit new HT leads
  7. Remove all dents from the car
  8. Full machine polish
  9. Maybe new seats
I know this isn't required to be done however I'm doing it for two reasons:

  1. To be keep me busy
  2. so once I can drive in July/August it'll be ready to go...
So don't expect too many up-dates this year!

@a17vts what a wally! Hope you recover soon mate!

Cheers Ry! Hopefully theses first 3 months go quick!

Where did you get the alignment done mate?

A place called DGT in Basildon. I basically told them what I wanted and they did it, but I don't believe they are experienced enough to advise.

Ouch!!!! Best wishes Tom .... get well soon.

Let me know if you want somebody to break in those Extreme VR2s..... :)

Thanks Graham. I've also got a fresh set of Interstate's.

On his hip? Looks a good job doesn't it! ?

I thought this when he first asked!

Ouch fell your pain. I have 3 screws holding my knee together and limiting my bending to 90 degrees from a mountain biking accident.

I was the same 3 months no weight bearing.

Hope you recover quick as I wanted to see how you got on sprinting.

Such a shame about the injury mate but fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and you’ll be back at it in no time!

And looking at the positives it gives you a chance to get the Cup 100% how you want it and finish those smaller jobs!

Looking forward to watching the progess even if it isn’t as exciting as your plans for it pre-injury lol!

Parts Arriving - April 2019

So with me not being able to do much, i started gathering parts for the Clio, all going well I could be back in the car sprinting in September, so I wanted to make sure its ready to go when I'm on my feet:

Firstly I sent my callipers off to Bigg Red to be refurbished, to be honest they where one of the best companies I've ever dealt with in the car industry. Good communication, mega quick turnaround and when they forgot to add stainless nipples they posted them out for next day delivery, they also look great

In hindsight I should have got them painted in the "premium" finish but we will see how these cope with the heat.

Next on my shopping list was a set of wheel studs, last year I had a few issues with my wheel bolts coming loose. I'm also currently running a 20mm spacer which I don't like as its hard work to check the bolts on the hub spacer are tight also plus I can go down to a 10mm spacer which I will prefer. I was looking at items on eBay, which I am sure are just as good however I wanted the piece of mind so went for the PMS one:

IMG_8912.JPG

Also makes its nice and easy coming with the loctite. I also ordered a set of 10mm spacers for the front but no pic yet!

Although I've had no issues I thought it would be a good time to change the injectors, as they haven't been changed in my ownership and when going through the paperwork I'm not sure when they have ever been changed. I went for OEM (Magneti Marelli), hoping they are not copies!

IMG_8911.JPG

I am also going to purchase a new set of leads and a coil pack which I'll order this week.

Finally after much online shopping around I decided on a new lightweight battery, as I don't use the car that often, I've gone with the Power Lite PS-09 which appealed to for a few reasons:

  1. Cost. This was only £95 delivered, which cheaper than the odyssey version.
  2. Weight. This is only 1.4kg which is far lighter than the odyssey version.
  3. Size. Its tiny, around 1/3 of a normal battery, thus leaving me more room in the engine bay. (Size (mm) (W x D x H) - 150 x 87 x 104)
  4. Comes with a charger. As the car is sitting in a garage most of its life its good that this comes with a charger so I know its ready to go when I am.
I'm going to leave the battery in the engine bay as it'll save weight on all the extra wires, secondly I'm not sure how batteries in the cabin are viewed by MSA and finally personally don't see the benefit unless you need the room up front. Oh and it also has a very cool voltage display panel.

IMG_8913.JPG

I just need to work out how I can fit the batter in the OEM location, although I think I remember @cpaterson76 made a lovely bracket for his old trophy.

Hopefully more to follow!

Did the job nicely and with a little Velcro strap all was secure ? and like u say at 1kg batter why add the weight of relocation cables....

Have you been out on a bike since? I’m still not sure if I’ll get on one once I’m fit.

Where did you get the battery from as I can only see the ps/05 and ps-20 for sale?

Got it from a chap on Facebook Allan McDonald, if you search him, but they are hard to find, I got his last one.

Also interested in the battery - looks very good value …..

Did you buy a package? i.e. charger, battery and mounting cage?

As above Graham. Contact Allan he was really helpful. The battery comes with a charger as standard but no mounting brackets which is what I’m hoping @cpaterson76 can help with.

I ordered a Velcro strap from eBay which I hope will be sufficient to hold it in place with a cage.

Maybe stupid question but,why are these small lightweight batts no good for daily use?

If I'm honest I'm not sure, just from what I've read online! I think the Odyssey ones are ok for every day use but this one is much lighter. From my limited knowledge I just think this is a little low on power output, I'm not sure how long it will last if parked up for a few days not on charge.

Thank @Darren61

Getting the Cup perfect is now my goal! I think our clone cars will continue, I think I want to flock my dash! Was going to ask, did you just get the top section of dash flocked? Hard to tell in your pics but it looks great.

My injury goal is to drive by 1st July '19! Although maybe not the Clio!

Ok mate, will have to look into it.Would be nice to have a smaller batt, not bothered about the weight side of it,just be good to have more space for the induction filter & doing bits in the area.

This was my main reason, to give a bit more room around the battery to help with the air filter, as its mega tight in that area.
