Not modified ... but a real struggle to fit. Good luck ...... :)

After spending a few hours last night attempting to get them in, I gave up. The seating sections slots right in, not a problem, its the back bit which is an issue. I'll give it a go again at the weekend, worse case I may need to modify it slightly!

So over the past few weeks I've done a few bits.

Firstly I did a quick oil change a few weeks ago, the car has done less than 3,000 miles in a year however it can't hurt:

IMG_7503.JPG

Then last weekend I took part in a sprint at Hethel, the Lotus test track. Unfortunately they didn't allow people to record the runs but I think we drove the South circuit. Was a great weekend, as Hethel is a good 2.5 hours from Home we decided to drive up on Saturday early evening which made Sunday so much more enjoyable.

I came 2nd in class loosing out to the class winning Mini Cooper S GP running 268bhp by just over 0.5 seconds.

Set up for the evening:

After the telling off at Snetterton I refitted the rear seat however I kept the rear bench folder down however this wasn't to the approval of one of the organisers, so after lunch I quickly changed the rear bench to the upright position, which "stopped me from me disqualified" all a little much for entry level motorsport!

A few issues I still need to resolve:

  1. I still have the starting issue, it's very odd, it started every time over the weekend including when both hot and cold.
  2. ABS light is still on so which I think is linked to the steering angle sensor so need to get that working.
  3. I think I have some issues with my brakes. When reversing and I go to brake it feels if the callipers are sticking on, however the brakes feel fine when stopping going forward.

Apart from that the Clio is still going great, there is part of me that wants to strip down all the suspension, subframe etc and get it all painted with new bolts etc but I think I'll price it all up and make a decision once all my sprints are over for the year.

Next sprint is at Debden in October however my friend was talking about taking part in the Brighton Speed Trials in September....we'll see.

That's interesting. I've got a Sparco cage in my 182 with the rear seat folded and it's not caused a problem with the scrutineers at Prescott - the only coment on the interior so far has been "you've kept the parcel shelf, thank you". I'm not sure I could even fit the seat backs upright if there was a problem.

What was they telling you off for regarding the rear seat?

That the seats where not in the upright position. They will go into the upright but they were not happy with them down.

Strangely both comments I’ve had have not been from the scrutineers! First comment was from another competitor and last weeks was from an organiser.

It’s not the end of the world just annoying as it’s another thing to do first thing in the morning before a sprint, and I can’t fit it in an upright position as when I travel I have my tools, petrol, spare wheel chair etc.

Also MOT is booked for next Saturday, I’m doing a few checks this afternoon but I can’t see any reason it won’t pass, but it’s nice to have second opinion on the car when you do some of the work yourself, unless it fails and I’ll have the hump!

Fuckin gays. I imagine the competitor complaint was because you were faster than him and he saw this as the reason - f**k all to do with the fact your skills are better than his/the car is better.

I would’ve been stood there playing the worlds smallest violin as they were talking.

Funny you should say this.

First complaint was a fellow class mate, who had raised the issue after lunch. He was running a Fiesta ST and was a good 5 seconds behind however he as running a decat, which again isn’t allowed! He was a bit of a dick

Second one was just a jobs worth, as I’m sure how my seats where is acceptable to most. Im going to print the section from the blue book for my next event.

I appreciate rules need to be in place however MSA event like this will be a thing of the past unless they are careful. With the likes of Javlin Sprint Series etc being easier to enter, cheaper to prepare and I would suggest more “trendy”!

MOT Pass - August 2018

Nothing major to report other than the Clio passed it's MOT last weekend. All went well at the MOT station no issues at all then as I parked it up on the way home and attempted to drive off without taking it off I snapped the handbrake cable! Luckily I do have a spare so I'll get that fitted at soon.

In 12 months I've driven 2,713 miles which 1,200 was for a trip to Isle of Man and I should really start to keep note how many miles I do on track as I bet the actual amount of road miles in only around 1k.

Anyway a few pics from the MOT.

Then on Wednesday evening a Friend owed me a favor so I got him to fit my front section of roll cage!

I don't really have any great pics of it going in but its in fits like a glove so credit to @Scrooge for making the rear perfect.

The front section is currently black which I'm not sure on, I wanted to paint it but now its in I think I like it. I'll live with it for a while and see how I get on.

I'll try and take some more pics of it over the weekend but at present I'm thinking about painting it white and then putting a bit of padding over it:

Great news on the MOT, shame about the handbrake cable. Funny as my handbrake cable snapped last year, our cars must have rolled off the production line together lol.

Front cage looks mean. Is it a ‘R017’ version as such?

Do love these rims on this colour car. How you finding the fatty kit after installing it? Still can't make my mind up...

So weird about our cars, literally the same issues at almost the same times!

Yeah it is now a Full Safety Devices R017 cage, weather being good I'll give it a wash in morning and get some better pics of the cage. See if I still want to paint it or not.

Awesome mate! Looking forward to seeing it
Are you coming to CSF?

Unfortunately not, I have a good friends wedding tomorrow which is taking up most of the weekend.

I'll have to pop over to the until one day as I still need to fix this starting issue!

Looks great the cage, when are you sprinting next?

Thanks. my next booked sprint is 7th October 2018 at Debden funnily enough was going to drop you a message as I know your close-ish!

I'm also in love with my wheels when I first got them I was sure I was going to paint them the usual grey however so pleased I kept them red. Will defiantly get them re-done in that colour when they need doing.

Regarding the RamAir, its hard to say for sure but I think it feels better with it compared to the phase1 set up but only my view. Also sounds better IMO, so much induction noise!

Great stuff Tom!

Cheers Mark. Can't wait to see yours on the road again soon.

So this weekend I managed to get some better pics of the roll cage. I'm not convinced on the black front section but I'm happy with it for now and I may paint it white over the winter. I'm just nervous that a white cage will look too in your face, but once I've slapped on a load of roll cage padding I hope it'll calm it down a little!

Pics:

If I paint white, I'll get a load of padding and work out where it should be.

I have nothing major planned for the car at present however it does need a good clean, amazing how dirty a car can get when only covering 3,000 miles a year and sits in a garage when not being driven! So I'll try a big autumn clean before the winter sets in.

Looks very good Tom.

What do you think of the Speedline 2118s ?

I think they are just soooooo heavy compared to my road wheels. I'm tempted to swap them once the current tyres have worn out.

I love the look of my 2118's but as you say they are just so heavy. I'm thinking about putting a set of sticky tyres put on my Pro Race 1.2's as they are so much lighter and could save time.

So I had a bit of spare time on Saturday morning so I decided to remove the front section of cage and paint it. Overall I'm really pleased with the results. It took me around 4 hours, including a bit of waiting around etc and only £25ish in cost of paint. If I were to do it again I would have purchased more primer.

I'll let the pics do the talking:

All the paint was from ECP's and TBH it was the cheapest I could find but covered really well.

Also a quick pic of my car I also like, also shows its no show car:

In other exciting news I picked up my new daily on Sunday, only driven it once for 20 miles but overall really pleased:

Finally I've got a sprint at Debden this Sunday which is the last of the year although I think its a quick track so I think I may struggle, we'll see.

Looks great Tom. Good call with the white.

500 looks mega too. Just bought a new car so going for cheap paint I see ?

Only joking mate. EPC stuff is alright. Much better than Halfords and cheaper too. Perfect for a "off the shelf" paint.

Yeah I'm really pleased with it overall, looks so much better in white IMO. Plus I wanted to do it as cheap as possible.

The Abarth is amazing. Its just a fun car and makes you smile when driving. I've not gone above 4k rpm or put it under much load however it goes well, I would go as far to say its my most fun daily I've owned.

Actually loving the colour of the 2118's against the RB!,giving me ideas if i ever get 2118's for the Cup.

Yeah I love my wheels, when I first got them I wasn't sure on the colour, I was going to get them painted grey however the longer they are on the more I prefer them. Although I soon need to put my TD Pro Race 1.2's back on as my tyres offer no grip in the wet!

Hi Tom - overall are you pleased with the Extreme VR2s? What compound did you go for? I believe there is a full wet version (VR3) coming out next year and it will be List 1B !!!

G

For what I paid yes I've been very pleased. I had an issue with my order and was delivered the wrong model twice then needed to collect from Rob in Southampton so got a good deal however I have the "road" compound (S2 IIRC) which are too hard for sprints but much better than anticipated. I wouldn't buy them again unless the prices come back down, which I can't see happening.

A bit like you I just go for what tyre appears to offer good value but I'll definitely go for the softest compound I can find.

Understood.......

I'm going to wait and see what's on the MSA Lists before I invest in any more tyres...... If the Interstate Race are still on the list then I may invest in a set - early Christmas present for the car :)

I was thinking the same. Almost worth a buying a set as they are so cheap. Worse case I’ll just use them for track days.

Are you running 205’s or 195’s?

Never been in here before (and I don't even know if I've met you before) but man!! it looks the absolute bollox!! I love it!!!

I went for 205s. They were £297 for 4 inc delivery whist the 195s were £257. I've never tried 205s before so I thought I'd give them a go ....... very pleased with them. I don't think the tread depth is as deep as say Rainsports but pretty good. I haven't tried them in the wet though .....

a17vts - fantastic build mate,

Quick question - how has the 172cup/EPAS set up held up over the last year? Have you had any issues with the belt skipping a notch running the 5pk847 belt?

Do you have any issues with rubbing and 205 tyres? I had 205's on my Pro Race 1.2's and they rubbed like crazy.

I do prefer 205 over 195.

Again, did you have any issues with rubbing?

Its been perfect to be honest. No issues with it what so ever. I did use the genuine 172 cup brackets which i think help it work with no issues.

How's you get on yesterday Tom?
Guy at work said he saw yours yesterday and yours stood out. He said there was a lot of clips there.

Was going really well until my last run and my clutch gave way! Less than a year old and only around 1,000 miles!

I was around 2 second slower than the class winning Morgan, so need to improve my driving, but course knowledge is key IMO!

Maybe time for a diff & new flywheel...

Debden Sprint - Sunday 7th October 2018

I completed in a sprint even at Debden at the weekend which was amazing. Great course and well organised.

Due to me arriving slightly late I didn't get a change to walk the course so the first two practice runs were done at a very slow pace. I then set a decent first timed run which was 2 seconds slower than a very well driven Morgan + 4 but sitting 3rd in class behind a Mini GP! Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any closer, the Morgan managed to run slightly better run which increased the lead to 3 seconds. I was constantly improving on every run and however I couldn't make a dent in his time.

Still a great day, until I crossed the line on my final run. No clutch!

I can only assume it is/was a faulty part as it was only fitted 12 months ago (almost to the day) and only covered around 1,000 miles (1,500 max), I manged to get the car home by some awful driving but saved me calling for a recovery truck. So I'm now in the process of pricing up a gearbox re-build and while its off I may as well look at a diff...

I'll post the official times once I'm emailed them as due to the clutch issues I forgot to make not of them all:

Yeah its crazy that the clutch has gone, I'll be interested to see the clutch once its out as I assume its another Valeo issue. At least its the last sprint of the year, although I am booked onto Rockingham in December but if Clio isn't working I still have the Abarth!

No turbo! Once/If diff is done that's it the Clio is complete, excluding maintenance.
