Not quite as much as I hoped to be honest. Electric ones weigh 770g, manual ones 650g

I’ll put those a little lower down the list then.. it does all add up but it starts to get very hard doesn’t it.. for the moment I am trying to keep mine MOT worthy which puts a stop to some easy weight.

What does your weigh at the moment? I guess you will only be running a single seat too?

Still weighs around 930kg at the moment. Rollcage and fire extinguisher cancel out a passenger seat and then I've also recently had to add a swirl pot too.

If I eventually go all fibreglass then I'll be as light as the 2 Clios that are faster than me in the series I race in.
Fibreglass doors are only 4kg each, so that's an extra 20kg off, plus the tailgate and lexan rear window I should be into the high 800s.

Have you drilled much of the inner skins inside? Mine just has a bolt in safety devices cage so not gone crazy chopping stuff out but I do have a fibreglass tailgate and bonnet! Also didn’t realise the savings with fibreglass doors were so big.

How's it going Sam? Are you going to be ready for Donny?

Coilovers have been to AST for a refurb and have come back. (Ouch £ wise). Engines out for new belts, pulleys, radiator, clutch and flywheel. It’s also leaking oil so gotta sort that. Roof and nose needs sorting by the panel guy (That’s been the hold up really as he’s been away). New windscreen , wings and doors to go in. Have to gut the doors. Fiberglass bonnet needs painting. Charlie mentioned something about changing all the seat mount bolts and harness bolts and they’ve held my fat ass upside down ?

It’s a nightmare. Donny is looking unlikely I think. Mallory is a definate though.

I came to the Thruxton race. I live a mile from circuit. Don’t think you were there?

It's a lot of work sorting the car after a roll isn't it.

I was on holiday for Thruxton, so looking forward to getting back out. Will hopefully be at Mallory too. Another great circuit, well suited to the Clios.

It’s a lot more than I thought. Summer holidays are my busiest time of the year work wise and Charlie is in the middle of moving units so I chose a really bad time to need this amount of work. I’ll need a test/track day to remind myself of Mallory before race day. I’ll let you know if I book one and you fancy it.

Did you manage to sort a door opener out?..

I cut the end of the cable off mine and trimmed some of the outer sleeving back. Then put some red heatshrink over it and looped the end of the cable on itself and fitted a cable lock barrel.

I cut a hole in the door card and passed the loop though.. I just then pull the loop forward (rather than towards myself) to open the door

That's a nice solution. But you need something to clamp the outer sleeve to don't you? So the inner cable can slide? My problem is I now have nothing to fix to and I'm not replacing my door cards now after discovering they weigh over 1kg each despite being carbon fibre!
I've been trawling through the Car Builder Solutions catalogue to try and find a cable long enough that I can extend to the other end of the door, fix it and just pull it under it's own tension. I'm open to ideas of course and I may be missing something obvious!

I haven’t got anything holding the outer in the middle of the door, just the hole in the door card keeps it in position.. the outer sleeve is attached to the mechanism so doesn’t move.. tbh I could of removed the outer completely and it would have been fine

I have seen people do as you say. If your not using a door card.

You could remove the outer sleeve completely and shortened the inner, then buy a bike brake cable and just use the inner and clamp the original cable and the new one together making it long enough to reach the other side of the door, then loop the end and bolt it to the door. Then just pull on it like you said.

Yes, this is exactly what I have in mind. I'm just trying to find a cable that has the right end on it that I can use in one piece. Otherwise I will have to join 2 like you suggest. (It's just more to go wrong in the heat of a driver change!)

  dan's cast offs.
original cable, p clip on the upper edge of the door and fit the cable through that, nipple holds it there and all you need to do is pull on the outer.

This was the advise I was given and went Armtech. Works perfectly

Out of curiosity, who gave that advice? Not heard a single bad thing about Cartek. And it’s 5 times lighter than armtech. And cheaper..

A man who knows a lot more about this stuff than myself. Also at my level a day with a pro instructor is going to have more effect on my lap times than the weight of an isolator. ?

So, 2 days to Donington and realistically only one day left to get any prep done.

The current weight saving phase is complete with the rear Lexan screen going in this evening with the help from my friendly neighbourhood National Windscreens man!

The doors are now finished with the longer release cable coming courtesy of a Fiat Doblo which happens to have the same barrell end on it. A small bit of fettling and some brake cable sleeve and 'job's a goodun'.

The Doblo cable had one of these little widgets fixed about half way along it's length, which had to go. (carefully ground off)

The new fibreglass bonnet and newly replaced passenger door are being collected tomorrow from being wrapped and they will be the last peices to go back on.
I've also modified the front bumper and grill. Mainly to give the centre of the grill more rigidity as there is no slam panel anymore and I know that fibreglass bonnets can be known to flap a bit, so if it needs tethering on the nose it's got something firm to fix to.

A fairly simple solution that should be sufficient hopefully.

The results are in, and total weight saving for this phase has been......

22.7kg.

Seems like it's been a lot of work for this but I guess in reality its almost a bag of sand in total and in addition to this, moving the battery into the centre of the car is also going to help with the weight distribution so it will be interesting to feel what, if any difference it has made.
I don't think there's going to be time to corner weight the car before the race now, so going forward that's something else that will need doing and should help.

Donington

Well, what a weekend!
As anyone who has read some of this earlier thread, 3 years ago I rolled the car in the gravel trap at the bottom of craners after a power steering leak covered the rear tires with fluid. Then 2 months later after rebuilding the car we returned there only for the engine to bend a valve or two when the bottom pulley slipped. Both of these instances occured in qualifying so up until this weekend I had never raced at Donington and had precious little track time on any other occasion, with it not being very local to me.
So, without a test day under the belt I began a tentative qualifying session trying to refresh my memory of the track. This time was cut short after just 2 laps when another competitor decided to split an oil line and start a small fire under their car bringing out the red flag.
On the restart we were left with just 20 minutes for us both to get some laps in, so I did another 5 laps and then let Paul jump in as he hadn't driven the car since Oulton and a fair bit had changed since then.
Paul is a handy driver at the best of times and as Donny is only 20 minutes from his house, he's driven it quite a lot and indeed won in his own car last year.
He stuck the car 3rd on the grid.

As I was starting the race and Paul was talking about the possibility of us winning, my strategy was all about damage limitation. I knew I wouldn't be able to match the laps times of the cars around me, so all I had to do was make sure I got through Redgate, turn 1 cleanly and then try and tuck behind someone and learn the lines and braking points as quickly as I could. No problem!

So a nervous few hours passed before our race at 3.55pm. We were reasonably happy with the car but removed the wheels, did a thorough spanner check and then decided on tire pressures all the time keeping an eye on the skies for the threatening rain.
Fortunately the rain only came at lunch time and the track had plenty of time to dry out before I pulled out of the assembly area and on to the track third behind the safety car ready for the rolling start.

Fortunately the grid formation put me on the inside for turn 1, although 4th position man decided he'd try and muscle me to the outside on the formation lap hoping I'd get confused and concede. I didn't! And as the lights went out, the pole sitter in front of me bogged down so I tucked up the inside of him and took the 1st corner tight. However faster cars came around the outside and as we went down into Craners I was in 4th with the rest of the 30 odd cars looming down on me from behind.
The white and red 106 of Martin Addison tried to get down the inside of me into Old Hairpin but quickly realised there was no room and promptly upset the ballance of his car and spun narrowly missing my back bumper. (wait until you see the footage!) It was close.

And although I managed to hold everyone else off for the first lap it was clear I wasn't going to be able to keep them behind me indefinitely and the leading pack were disappearing into the distance. So I let a couple through to relieve some pressure and decided to follow them hopefully increasing my pace and keeping on their tail. Which worked. By the time we came in for the driver change I had been following Martin Adison for 3 or 4 laps, catching him at various points on the circuit but unable to get him on the corners or match his corner exit speed either. So I pitted in 6th place and due to our super quick (well practised) driver changes Paul got out in 4th.

From there it was a war of attrition between Paul and his brother Tom, also in a Clio. As the other cars pitted Paul found himself in 1st place. Helped by success penalties being applied to other front runners (including his brother) from previous wins in Tin Tops.
And that's where Paul stayed until the gearbox started to give up and the brakes started to overheat. After a couple of lockups and missed gears Tom was on his tail and the remaining 10 minutes was a battle for the lead with several exchanges of places, a very nervous look on my face (and also on Paul and Tom's dad's face!) until at last Paul came over the line first with Tom on his bumper and a rather over excited commentator screaming the place down!

Touted by the organisers as probably the best race of the season, I have to say I agree. And some!

Video to follow.

Yes, GP circuit. Best was a 1.49.2.

What was your turbo monster doing?

Not much faster haha
But in my defence [emoji13] this was my first ever outing in this car. Defo can do better.. but considering the power I have a be it only 230bhp it’s not an impressive time... but saying that my mate in a 600bhp GTR does 1.47... and he is a good driver not just some amateur.

That time sounds decent to me mate. You were on slicks weren't you? They would help massively. We don't have that luxury!
