Help me clean my garage

Jaff.

ClioSport Club Member
Thought I'd utilise this new forum.

I'm a scruff, my garage never stays tidy because as soon as I clean it, I work on stuff and do t clean up after myself - rinse and repeat!

The main issue I have is nothing really has a place and things don't fit anywhere and it all ends up on the bench.
So I want ideas, ideas that help me with storing boxes out of the way, a bin! A bin that works would be nice, a place for both welders with bottles etc. Etc.

ill get some pictures when Flickr starts behaving.

Basically show me some cool ideas from other people's garages lol

That's a neat idea!
I do tend to have all my car cleaning gear in their own boxes though

I must be the opposite of you, spend more time keeping it tidy than actually doing any useful in it! Only thing that pisses me off in mine is bikes that I don't really want in there ("We'll go on a bike ride one day" - 3 years later...) and can't really get out of the way.

I've got racking/workbench with lower shelf, some cheap B&Q kitchen units without doors on the wall for smaller bits and hooks for anything that will hang up (fold out tables, B&D Workmate etc).

One of these too (bit flimsy but solid if you bolt/screw it to something else) - http://www.rapidracking.com/en/rra/2-bays-of-blue-budget-shelving-ssb32-pbe

All blue + red door + yellow car = unintentional Abarth colour scheme.

Everything needs a place and it needs to be accessible. Finding/making a place for everything takes ages but it's worth it.
Cupboards beat shelves for keeping things clean
Try to be a little diligent about putting stuff away, a plastic toolbox for the tools you're using for a job and then clean/oil them and return them to their place when done. An hour putting tools away is quite therapeutic when you dont have to think about it.
A painted floor makes sweeping up and keeping clean FAR easier.
Bin should be open topped and not large, an old 25l plastic drum is ideal. This way you can throw things into it and you dont risk overfilling it and tearing the bag when you remove it.
Try to keep the floor clear. All my cabinets are in the first 600mm of the length of the garage, barring a toolbox and a welder which are on wheels.
utilise dead space, depending on construction, you can get some shelving above the rafters, or above the door

Is that just a shelving unit, without the wooden shelves put on? Genius if so

It is pretty much that. The top is a shelf but you could take the wood off and hold another set. I need to make some brackets to hold it off the wall a bit as the tyres stick out a bit either side obviously which will make it stronger.

I could make them (being a farrier/blacksmith) but it cost more to get the steel to make them than buy this of eBay. Mine would be a hell of a lot stronger though

Some of these if you don't already. Me and a mate spent an hour organising them into metric nuts, washers, bolts then rivnuts into each box for M4, 5, 6, 8 and 10.

Made my life a million times easier when you need something quickly and you're not rummaging through a bag of mixed nuts and bolts.

The thing that made the engine conversion on my car the least stressful is having tools exactly where you expect them so after carring the spanners and sockets always go back into their boxes in the right place. Nothing more annoying than spending 20 mins looking for a 13mm spanner you left put somewhere last time.

I'm going to be getting a shelf for screw drivers next.

I've got them they ended up full of s**t lol. I should have put nuts and boots in them but instead I used a load of celebrations boxes from Christmas.

As for shelves for screwdrivers I've found it's either putting all your tools on the walls or in your toolbox. Either way I never put them back lol

It doesnt matter what ideas or storage places you have in place to keep your garage tidy, it sounds to me like you need to just be more tidy and less idle, no matter how many storage places and tubs you have, if you dont put your items in them and tidy the place up, there's literally no point.

You could have absolutely nothing in your garage to store anything, and it could still be tidy and easy accessible, its idle'itus thats the cause of your garage being a shitehole by the sounds of it m9.

I'm with this guy.

Tidy garage, with tidy tools, much less stress. Takes 5 mins to put things back where they came from. Man up. X

Yikes, upset a few people lol.

I'm quite happy working in a shithole.

Just curious how others keep their garages tidy because mine is tidy at some point.
The thread title is a little misleading to be fair I don't actually need help I'm just being nosey.
Apologies if it confused the more intellectually challenged amongst the community

Make your own. Then you can design bits into it to accommodate things of different sizes

I designed my own bench, just didn't think to put anything on it. I used to store my car cleaning gear there but they weren't in the best place and then I acquired 2 welders that were better suited under there but no room for the bottles etc.

I need to sort mine out. You know it's bad when you've got a double garage and you can't even fit the car in :(

Make shelving. Make a home/box/shelf/cupboard/tray etc for everything and put it all back when you're done.

Even get a little roller cabinet to keep tools on so you've only got a few out at a time

that looks brilliant @Cub. want mine to be very similar. Is that normal garage floor paint or epoxy? Any more details on the racking?

Cheers man. Floor is epoxy. But it's chipped badly already. I'm planning on an extension next year, and it will mean a new double garage. And I'm paying to get the floor professionally done, because it agitates me that the paint chips.

Racking - simple 2x4 with sheet. Plenty of time measuring and decent screws.

At least that what's it looks like, I didn't make it 😂

Some great ideas in here. I'm having my new garage built in July so I'll no doubt be checking in!

Bump..!
I want to level my garage floor as all the concrete is chipping. It's semi painted at the moment (imagine it was painted many many years ago and only some remains).

What have people used to self level? Lots on google etc but first hand recommendation would be great.

Cheers
