Well, another day another spending money on stuff I tell myself I need...

First i'll start with some maintenance. It turns out my wishbone is catching the gearbox a bit due to how low the car is at. The wishbone angle is absolutely awful so I attempted to raise the suspension but the platforms were seized solid. So after muchos swearing and some plus gas I finally freed them, disassembled them and greased them all up. Then used some tights from the other halfs cupboard to protect them for a bit. Hopefully they last but most likely i'll order some proper covers. For now they'll do.

Check the wishbone angle at my current ride height

And the offending coilovers. Pure top mounts holding out well to salt...

Raised 20mm up from which should hopefully sort out the catching.

Ordered an oil temp and pressure gauge in one from Racetech. And the sandwich plate and everything else to go with it.

I am tempted to make a guide with all the parts required as theres not much info available for this so for me to create a definitive guide would really help others out I reckon.

Oil temp sender is mech, fitting into a 3/8 fitting however its not moving the dial when in hot water. Weird

Sandwich plate all installed. Just waiting on an m20 x 1.5 extension bolt so i can re-install my sandwich plate for the cooler.

I then routed the cables and wanted it as neat as possible through a grommet to stop fretting and then through the original tweeter cover. It's already bugging me that the grommet is of sub quality and you can see the frayed manufacturing marks on it here haha

All in position though, absolutely love where it is as it's out of the way and perfect for a quick glance now and again to check everything is good.

Bad times. Had a drive around the peaks today with the lads but it's been pulled short because I had a f**king horrible knocking noise on the ns front area. Come home to check and this is what's going on on the driveshaft.

If it's the gearbox that's fucked I don't know what I'm going to do. Simply cannot justify spending anymore money on the car this year. So may have to sorn the fucker till next year maybe.

Cannot be bothered at all pulling the engine out and spending MORE money sorting it. Not a chance. Allllllllllllmost tempted to break it.

This is the play I'm seeing

Bad times Dan,
That looks like the Diff spider or side gear, give the credit card a hammering and get it finished.
You don't think it stems from that earlier shaft issues do you?

I did think that may have caused it but that was ages ago. And I've driven it to efi and back and it's been fine but maybe it's weakened it.

In all honesty I'm pulling my hair out because it's going to be the time to remove the engine and box and then the rebuild cost.

@NorthloopCup what are your thoughts and an estimated cost to rebuild it if it's that that's gone?

I'm literally on the brink of tears right now because it's more expense haha I can see why people sell up as soon as they turbo their car. I think I'd happily sort it if I'd had the car turboed elsewhere but the fact I've fitted it all and spent so much time on it I'm reluctant to bother. Maybe I'll change my mind next week or so!

Give it a few days before making any rash decisions mate. I know you're probably pissed off with it now but don't give up with it!

Stick with it you wetter. You'll get it sorted and once you get to properly enjoy it you won't regret it one bit.

Don't be a mong. Give it a few days/week, investigate a little further and come at it with a fresh head. If it means taking it off the road a little while longer then so be it, given the effort, time and money invested so far you'd be a special kind of r****d to throw in the towel at this point.

Well it's either the diff itself or it's diff bearings. Cost wise it's difficult to say until it's apart, but if it's the diff you may as well bang a quaife in while it's opened up.

It'll be the shaft that's killed it though I would've said.

Other option is buy another standard NDO box.

Don't give up Dan. I've been in that position before, put a whole load of time and money into my RS turbo track car, used it once, broke something and then sold it in bits. Regretted it ever since. Defo do as others have said and sit on it for a few days or a week.

Cheers guys.

Just checked the footage from when I had the driveshaft issue and it turns out the excessive load was placed on the other side of the gearbox (drivers side) not passenger where this issue is. The reason why i'm saying this is because I don't want to fix the gearbox for it to do it again if its another underlying issue. Maybe driveshaft angle has caused it?

What else could have caused that problem?

You're all right though, I just need to take a step back and relax for a bit. Ordering tickets to Dubai next month and gonna enjoy all that first before anything I reckon.

The day was fun yesterday driving around the peaks with everyone, shame I had to cut it short due to this knock though but i'm glad I did before it caused more damage.

The brakes got better and better as they bedded in I think.

The car is now f**king horrendous on fuel although I can smell fuel as it's leaking from the sender unit cap but that wouldn't give me dire mpg as it's just vapours.

I filled up to the top and got 99 miles to half a tank... although i'm starting to wonder if theres an issue with the ecu and the reading of fuel as it was on half way and only took 10 litres to go to the top again indicating it's a c. 20 litre tank? haha

My thoughts on the drive yesterday are: the roads were brilliant, absolutely epic and the route I had planned was good but I need to solve the issue that it didn't flow as well as I planned it on google maps which took you to the point of interest each time. Im going to look into it. But in terms of driving the car, it's probably due to the geo not helping as its not set up properly but I found it hard to "enjoy" the drive as with this set up it literally is all or nothing. I found myself slowing down for corners, coming out of them then booting it...rinse and repeat. I was absolutely begging for a naturally aspirated car as you can flat out a lot of it and still feel in control. I probably need to try the car on track and go from there but at the moment i'm tempted by a 172 cup along side boris and my daily.. won't be for a while but i'm considering it.

Even the gf said something the other day when going for a drive, she said I didn't seem happy driving it anymore like what I used to be like.

Anyway i'll stop whining on and post a pic @RyG took yesterday as I liked it.

I'll come up and have a look at it if you want mate? You're only in derbados, so about 30 minutes from me. Probably give us both a better idea of what's what and I can give you a few options to mull over? Let me know.

I know how you feel mate, and driving your car thinking that something might break all the time is a s**t experience.

I enjoyed my car just as much in n/a form, probably more like you say tbh, as standard you still get that nice revy kick at 5k, without any worries or problems.

Stick with it tho mate, once its fixed and problem free, im sure you will love it even more, then maybe get a diff and keep your foot planted around the twistys.

What a kind offer, thank you very much mate. I'll definitely take you up on that. Thank you.

I think right now we're both in the same boat yeah. I'm more and more contemplating a quaife the more I think about it but it HAS to be the end of the year.

So I've had a look and the splined part of the gearbox moves which concerned me but I've been told this is normal? The outer bit you see in the picture is absolutely solid too however it's scuffed.

Had a look at the cup that goes into that bit and that looks fine but it looks like it's worn away the bearing of the gearbox as that should be an interference fit? This isn't, is simply falls in the gearbox :(

The rifled part of the cup is a solid 31.94mm all down its length indicating no wear as surely it would be unevenly distributed.

Gearbox end is showing 32.4mm which definitely isn't an interference fit!!

This is the play. Pretty much had confirmation from a few others that it's fucked.

That coupled with the fact I had absolutely crazy pulling left and right the other day suggests dead differential.

This is bad news, bad because I can't afford to get it fixed this year. So tomorrow I'm going to cancel my insurance and tax :(

This also means I'm obviously not going to be able to go on track at CSF. :( :(

Unless I can find an absolute SCRAPPER of a 172 for mega f**king cheap for the event.

Are you on the .net fb page? Some guy in Newcastle has a box for £250
I was going to get a second hand box but then figured it's a lot of work for it to do it again, :(

And you've just reminded me, I've completely forgotten to return your injectors like an absolute arse hole. I'm really sorry about that John, I'll go get them packaged up now!

Well, @MarcR was offering to make some stickers so couldn't resist asking for this haha

I won't be breaking Boris. Will be getting a quaife and seeing the positive from it. Which right now, is f**king hard to do Hahaha. Phoned my mum earlier to tell her and she was so gutted for me bless. She said "well what are you going to do without a project? I'm concerned for you" hahah she knows.

May start removing the engine and box next week or something.

Have a good look over it before removing the eng/box for any other areas which might be a concern later down the line, nightmare this has happened but as they say, life go's on, it'll be worth it in the end, if a project ever ends

Gutted for you Dan after all your hard work. I know how you feel though as the Impreza is currently up for sale with it's engine fault...

Don't be like me though! Borris is far too special to let go!

I'm still going to CSF regardless to whether I manage to sell the soon, and find a replacement in time. I'll just be sat on top of that hill drowning my sorrows [emoji23]

You're more than welcome to join me! [emoji6]

Just read this from start to finish.. what a journey you and this car have made! Amazing! Really curious to see how Boris wil continue.

Just got my racing blue 172 a few weeks ago! Did an oil change and some more maintenance will come soon. It's on coils and has an exhaust+powerflex bushes. What would you recommend for next best mods? (Maybe something to sort out the annoying wobbly gearlever..)
