Vehicle theft - insurance issues

  Volvo C30 R - T5
This post isn't specifically Clio related but I thought I'd share it to see if anybody here has had any experience with stolen vehicles and associated insurance issues..

A vehicle was stolen during the early hours a couple of weeks back, we believe stolen to order (it's a MK2 Focus RS). The thieves removed the drivers side front window, used some software to programme a blank key which allowed them to disable to alarm system and make off with the car. The thieves left the broken window on the drive which was good of them.

The police were notified and managed to pick the car up on a surveilance camera heading out of the area a few hours after the theft. The car has been fitted with a tracker which was not active at the time of the theft. Following the theft the tracker was activated (at a cost of £400.00) which displayed no signal for 24 hours - possibly because the car was being stored in garage somewhere.

Eventually the tracker did manage to obtain a signal and 48 hours following the theft the vehicle was retrieved from a neighbouring city and an arrest was made. The car was then recovered back to a local ford dealer for an insurance assessment for damage which is ongoing - there has been talk of a full respray to rectify damage caused on most panels, ironically the drivers side window had already been replaced by the thieves, however every last item that was in the car has been taken, including all service history & receipts for the car.

Having communicated with the insurance company they are suggesting that the damage caused to the vehicle is unlikely to warrant a write off BUT they are stating that the car will be classified as stolen recovered and in the words of the insurer 'this could decrease the resale value by some 40%'.

Obviously given that the car will have no paperwork at all and that it will be marked on HPI checks as stolen recovered there is a bit of a stalemate with the insurers regarding how the difference in resale value will be made up - all of which is even more frustrating since had the tracker not have been activated it is likely that the car may never have been found (it had false plates on it when found by the police).

Interested to hear if anybody has experienced anything similar.
