My Renault Clio 172 Phase 1

  ITB 428 Ph1
Obviously this is a before, can't wait to see what it makes once everything is ready to rock and roll !

  225 Cup & Williams
That's good figures mate my ph1 made 164 bhp & 145 lbft with a ktec stealth exhaust and Itg panel filter.

UPDATE

As you may know, I
dropped my phase 1 clio 172 off to TDF to have the following
work..

JMS matched inlets and new PTFE gaskets
8mm blue
magnecor ignition leads
428 cat camshafts and new timing belt and
gaskets
k tec upper engine mount
k tec gear box mount
powerflex
dogbone mount
k tec silenced de cat and new gaskets

and
finally a remap....

I had already fitted a k tec supersports
stealth exhaust system and an ITG drop in cylinder filter and it made
169bhp and 151ftlbs on TDF's rolling road before they installed the
new modifications. They told me this was very good which I believe it
is.

I dropped the car off the 10th and arranged to collect it
on the 17th which is today. TDF is a good 2 and a half hours from me,
so I obviously got the train to get home after dropping it off and
got it again to get back up there to bring the car home, therefore I
was expecting it to be complete.

I called a day before to make
sure it was complete but it was not. All the engine work and
modifications had been fitted but the remap was not. Matt said he
would map the car for me while I made my way up there but
unfortunately there was a problem..

The port Matt was going to
use to map the car was intermittent, therefore the signal dropped in
and out which meant obviously the map couldn’t be done. However
Matt kindly ordered me the part I needed which was only £7 or so but
it wont be in for around four days so I drove the car back without
the map. I am returning when the part arrives so the car can be
mapped.

What it made so far....

All the
modifications are fitted and the car feels and sounds like a race
car, I haven’t put my foot down yet because I would rather wait
until the mappings been done. The car as it stands made

189.2 BHP and 160.2 torque which I was
very very pleased about..

Matt said with the map it should make
a little more perhaps 2-3bhp and improve midrange and smoothen out
the curve, my results can be seen below

what do you guys think good or not ?

The bill from TDF was £1012.16 to be precise, excluding the remap

But you get what you pay for and these guys at TDF are the real deal ! I have alot of confidence in them.

  ITB 428 Ph1
Obviously all the modifications bar the timing belt was supplied by me, including the modifications it will be alot more

  ITB 428 Ph1
Cosmetically my car is almost perfect, however the front bumper was missing a clip and is now having off one side which makes it look untidy and cheap. I have just booked it in at a Renault bodywork shop on Monday to have one side sprayed and blown and repaired so it looks like new. Then a trip to TDF to get the remap, then a brake for a few months. I will post a pic up later on to show you what I mean. I opened the car up last night with a friend and it absolutely flew. The cams pull so much harder you can feel a massive difference. Gear changes and everything in the car feel so much smoother and tighter. However, if you don't like feeling vibration from the engine I wouldn't fit the ktec engine mount kit as you feel exactly what the engines doing, but this is what there designed todo.

  ITB 428 Ph1
It does cost alot if you want it done properly, I have seen TDF ITB set up and it looks very impressive and kool, I am looking at Micheals crazy turboood clio at the moment too as he said he will release the kit at some point. Obviously I will have a break from it, then perhaps look at these again in 6 months time.

Car looks good mate :) good progress

How comes you swapped coilovers?

With regards to the decat, can you not tuck the lamda up in the heatshield? That's what I have done, although I'm not sure 182s are different from ph1s

Yeah given the choice I would probably go boost over ITB, as much as I like the noise from ITB's they're very pricey.

Being honest though I will probably have another car before I do anything to mine. I want another phase 1.

  ITB 428 Ph1
I changed coilovers purely because I wanted it lower at the back so it didn't look so nose heavy. I purchased the decat with only one hole although on my cat I have two, TDF put the Lamba sensor in a spacer and tie wrapped it up so my engine management light does not come on, the Lamba sensor will always read clean air this way.

Yes the figures alone show the massive gains with boost over ITB's, and the prices will be quite similar I believe, Micheal said around 2.5-3k for turbo and TDF quoted me exactly 2.5k for ITB's.

Phase 1ns are so cheap to buy, but finding one that has not been thrashed is hard, mine had only done 41k when I bought it and it's now done 43k. It spent most of its life still lol

My old one was on 72k when I bought it and only had two owners. Still needed a cambelt service though.

If I hadnt taken the seat mounts out with a grinder I would still have it. Could be worse though, I nearly bought a Golf.

Yeah Golf's are nice cars, it would have been a mk4 though not a new one and they're hardly the best drivers car. I owned one for a few months before I got the phase 1 earlier in the year.

I love where the gear stick is in the Civic

So..

After driving the car down the the dual carriageway last night I thought she needed a good clean.

Here are my products I like to use

And this is the bumper spacing I am not happy about

The cars booked in at a Renault body work specialist Monday so this can be addressed, the bumpers being repaired and sprayed for around £120 which is not too bad.

lol i know this is an issue with phase 1ns but hopefully these guys can pull something out of the bag

  MK3 GTI golf 16v
if they do come up with a way of getting it to stay there, would you be able to get some photos so others can do it ? i think every ph1 owner would love you (myself included) as i have given up trying to secure it in place lol

Little update...

Dropped the car off at the Renault bodywork shop today to get the bumper sprayed and repaired. I called Matt today from TDF and the port is arriving tomorrow so I can complete my car and have the map it deserves.

After having my coileys set up and a full geometry a while back, I noticed a bobbling noise coming from the rear, it's starting to really get on my tits now, I really am now sure what it is ? It makes the strange noise when going over bumps in the road, Could it be the rear springs settling in maybe, who's knows !

  ITB 428 Ph1
Okay so..

I got the clio back yesterday after having the bumper re alligned so the spacing is correct, i also had half repaired and sprayed and blown in as there was a little pressure point where a previous owner had knocked into something (garden gnome perhaps).

Anyway here are the pictures now...

As i have said before there is a cat that comes into my garden at night and treats my car as a slide, pictures from this morning when i woke up

the distance i park from the wall to stop this car attacking my car at night !

possibly suspect ...

I have bought a tailord car cover but i cant fit it yet as the instructions say do not fit to a newly sprayed service for 6 months, i have my roof, bonnet, wings, bumper and side sprayed in the last 2-3 months so im stuck ...

  ITB 428 Ph1
I was supposed to give the repair guys a camera so they could take some pictures of the bumper being re alligned to help people in the future, but i totally forgot sorry,

I called Matt at TDF and i have booked my car in for the remap Thursday 1st December, it currently sits at 189.2bhp and with the map im hoping to achieve 191bhp if im lucky and improve midrange as it feels more like a v-tec at the moment with the power in a lump rather than through out the gear range

UPDATE

As im sure you are aware I had all my parts fitted by TDF , however my port was damaged so Matt was unable to connect into my ECU. Kindly Matt ordered me another one and told me he would let me know when it arrives so it will allow him to connect into my ECU. The part arrived and I arranged with Matt to go up to TDF midday today. Matt successfully changed the port and identified a damaged pin on the one he removed which was great. After replacing the port Matt successfully connected his equipment into my car and then started to work his magic seen below.

photo16.jpg

photo15.jpg

After working his magic, my clio made 192.4BHP and 166.9trq which I was absolutely delighted about. Matt was even impressed by how well my car has responded to all the work and said I should be very pleased which I am totally made up about. Figures shown below with before and after remap.

th_photo17.jpg

I very highly recommend TDF because there quality of work and communication is absolutely superb. Anything they can do to help they will. I must say a big thankyou to Matt for the work he has put into my car and the results are fantastic.

On another note I have purchased some 20mm H&R wheel spacers and some new smaller number plates.

photo18.jpg

photo19.jpg

The plans to fit both of these at the weekend to give a few more finishing touches to the car.

I atttempted to refurb one of my headlights from the thread on here and it came up okay, think I need to give it another going over with the 1200 wet and dry and then do the other one.

Future plans for me ...

Respray door mouldings and bullets by sprayshack
Refurb alloys
Puremotorsport front brace and topmounts
Whiteline ARB
TDF ITB's

but for now I am going to enjoy my car and give it a very well earned clean.

Huge difference in throttle response and how the car delivers the power all the way through the gears.

Thanx for the comments guys, I will easily get away with 20mm but at the same time don't want to wear my bearings out too quickly. When are you getting yours mapped Ricardos ? Or have you done it already ?

  ITB 428 Ph1
