Re: Cub 172's Flamer Project

Happy Days!

Has @Chip-mk1 trimmed up a bit?

My weight goes up and down loads mate, I eat absolute crap all the time which makes me head for about 17 stone, but depending on how much martial arts or gym etc im doing its sometimes a few stone less, at the moment its kinda in the middle, but gouchos tonight should send it up again, lol.

Shame we dont live more local Oli, was great spending a bit of quality "man-time" with you, lol.

Re: Cub 172's Flamer Project

Why are you taking the 438s out again?

Or is it just for the transfer to the new engine?

Love the amount of help you dish out Chip!

Re: Cub 172's Flamer Project

Plan is;

- Keep standard for 12 months or so.
- Then either cam / ITB (with 421s) it or supercharge it like Danlp6 's which I am hoping to have a ride out in at Bedford in Feb. From speaking to chip last night, Dan's current set up with the charger sounds ideal.

Either way, the 438's are surplus to requirements.

Re: Cub 172's Flamer Project

Cool, sounds interesting, will be following your progress!

You know 438s and 421s are the same? Just timed up differently. Speak to your Staines mapper ;)

So don't sell up just yet Cub.

Mmmm. I thought 428s were the same? I may have got that the wrong way round. Now I R confused! I'll speak with Mike.

Either way, I'm going for a slightly more aggressive cam profile with the bodies. I wouldn't have if my engine was healthy, just kept the 438s and ITB'd them, but sadly they have to come out either way...

lol - already sold ;)

Nope, its 421/438 which are the same. K-Tec even display it on their site indirectly.

Lol at already sold. Looks like you're going for a charger then? ;-)

Or some different cams altogether?

Yep. Charger is looking promising. Bodies, plus cams, plus ECU is not far off cost wise a charger, so I'll see.

For the minute, I'm back to standard. Well, in terms of engine...

Re: Cub 172's Flamer Project

438 and 421 are same except ktec f@cked up the LCA on the 438s

if you go bodies you want 422 (plus pistons to suit) really though. For turbo or charger you want standards.

v800mjh - Yep. But I learnt that the hard way, via k-tec. In honesty, I'm hoping to learn enough along the way to be largely self sufficient with the spanners, to a degree. Obviously I'll call on a specialist for mapping and things like that, but mechanically I want to improve my capabilities.

Thats why I enjoyed last night, was great to see how things work / go together and get my hands dirty.

I'm with you mate. I'm trying to pick up and learn things along the way too. I had never touched a car myself before I got the Clio. Would love to be self sufficient to some degree.

Just had a read through :)

Be good to see it with a properly functioning engine again.
And no excuses for you now, have a full heated garage and setup and some great teachers haha!

Re: 'Cub's Trackday Flamer - Cage etc'

I'm Very jealous of the car and the garage, beautiful flamer and an awesome garage! I'm hoping to at least attend a trackday next year so hopefully I'll get to see it in the flesh! (might convoy up with Edward thinking about it)

Cheers chap! You should attend a trackday, you'll be hooked! Should make the journey up for the Bedford day on the 15th Feb. Will be a great day, its ideal for beginners and there are 10 or so of us CS'ers running. :)

Re: 'Cub's Trackday Flamer - Cage etc'

I'll see what I can do, it would be my first so need to know costs ie fuel needed etc.. but if I don't run then I may have to collar someone into letting me into the passenger seat!

A full tank of fuel should be sufficient for a day in a standard 172 if you arent going out loads and loads and loads.

I never need to refill there in our RS2 car if I turn up with a full tank, but I do in the turbo if I use it quite a lot.

Re: 'Cub's Trackday Flamer - Cage etc'

That is down to how hard you drive, first time I did it on 2 week old new contis didnt take much life out of them, but then it was just an after noon session and only went out a few times.

Shouldn't use to much, its not like coombe or llandow where all the corners are one way, and you end up killing the front left tyre.
Come up if you want, its a good track and easy if its your first time round. l33th3tr33 Stop calling me Edward! Thats not my name :p

Re: 'Cub's Trackday Flamer - Cage etc'

That's alright then, regarding tyres, how much tread would I be looking at losing if I went out lots? P-zero neros.

Personally I like to lob a car around more aggressively than is optimum for laptimes just cause I like to feel it slide about under me a bit etc, so I destroy tyres quite quickly, but if you drive 1 tenth under the limit of grip instead of 2 tenths past it like me, then you will find they last ages.
