Can't select gear - what's up?

  330i. E30 Touring.
Tried hitting the starter motor? It could be sticky.

Could either be that, or the starter motor's not turning the flywheel for some reason.

I'd call the garage and get them to take a look. Likely to be done under warranty.

It's tight, but I'd guess you can get a breaker bar on it to tap it.

Over the back of the engine, under the exhaust manifold.

for some rather fortunate reason i have a couple of lengths of 2x4 in the boot. think i was using them to hold the window up while waiting for a new window motor. and robbing grannies of course.

at least i know where to look now, i'll give it a smack a bit later, thanks

I'll have to dig up the invoice, it was someone who came highly recommended to me by someone I trust. They're in Canterbury if that helps.. at all lol. Had it back over a year now and it hasn't missed a beat.

  Evo 5 RS
Doh, not in Canterbury at all. Was thinking of something else. It was Transco in Croydon Surrey. Although they did fit the clutch cable wrong...if I had any quibble lol. 12,000 mile warranty or 1 year. That also included removal and refit

how much do you pay?

Not a lot,all part of a sponsorship deal. But our guy can do a complete rebuild with the circlip mod in a day with parts off the shelf.Only charges for what he uses, loads of people off here have been to him and no complaints so far.

Based in Worcester, Agency have specialised in automotive gearboxes and transmissions for over 40 years. Able to offer repairs, full rebuilds and exchange units. We found their services to be exceptional.

called the rac out. it's a bad earth cable, likely the one going to the gearbox. bell housing mean anything to anyone? the rac chap did a good demonstration of the problem for me. he got an earth wire out the van and connected the negative terminal on the battery to an earth point on the engine and it started. i'll take it back to the garage on saturday to sort out the cable.

thankfully an easyish fix. shame i got a nail in the tyre today too :(

  330i. E30 Touring.
It's an easy one to sort. They've probably not reconnected it.

As said, if you need to drive it, earth the subframe to the gearbox/engine and it'll be fine.

  172DD Cup
can i get at the cable from above- is it just a case of tracing the negative terminal down to the starter motor, or will the earth be on the gearbox? mechanic didn't open today, can't blame him, but if it's just a case of tightening a bolt up i'll do it myself. cheers

Rebuilt gearbox starting to crunch into 3rd after c.100 miles

Hi all, I had a rebuilt gearbox (Agency Transmissions) fitted and after about 100 miles it started to crunch into 3rd gear, a very very minor crunch and I can avoid it if I let the revs drop a bit and it only does it when down shifting from 4th or 5th, ie when approaching a roundabout.

Is it likely to be synchros or wrong gearbox oil? If the wrong gearbox oil, can I save it if I change the oil now or is it already wrecked?

Cheers, Kristian

Re: Rebuilt gearbox starting to crunch into 3rd after c.100 miles

^ aye. my linkage was out into 2nd after rebuild. I thought it was the syncro also. theres no way you would of f**ked a syncro in that time unless you get off on clutchless shifting. Also get it on a ramp and check dog bone as if you're driving on the red line a foobared one is likely to cause crunchiness

Re: Rebuilt gearbox starting to crunch into 3rd after c.100 miles

silent, all the mounts are new :) i did the powerflex dogbone back in september, and had the top and bottom mounts replaced in december while the box was out. nice to hear i wouldnt have buggered the synchro in that time, although there's still the chance that it wasn't picked up by agency when they rebuilt the box.

fred, interesting what you say about the linkage. someone else mentioned it wouldn't be the linkage, but it was one of my initial thoughts as it defo needs adjusting, it just don't feel equal throughout the box (garage done the work...) lots of movement to get it into 1st and not much to get it into 5th. its in the garage on monday so they can check the linkage, but if i get the chance on the weekend, how do i align it? is it just a case of putting it in neutral, loosen a couple of bolts, reset the linkage and tighten?

if you **** up the linkage you CAN knacker the syncros in no time

its a bit of an experience thing with setting them up

Re: Rebuilt gearbox starting to crunch into 3rd after c.100 miles

ok, the garage said the gearbox is the problem, they said they think it's a stiff bolt ring but can't be sure without taking it apart. they also said it's got a small leak at one of the driveshaft seals.

what's a bolt ring?!?

  172DD Cup
ok, gearbox has got a leaking driveshaft seal and they think a stiff bolt ring is causing the grind into 3rd but they can't be sure without taking it apart.

:(

i just spoke to agency transmissions, they said likely to be a synchro ring- £100 fitted. so much for buying a rebuilt box. i'll wait and see if tony comes on here, see if he can take it back to them and get them to do it foc

  172DD Cup
f**k me, you don't have much luck!

i won't mention the nail in the tyre and the being caught speeding... both within a couple of days of picking the car up.

i may take you up on your previous offer to help me with the gearbox if said offer still stands. i hope that tony/burpspeed can try and get the gearbox sorted free of charge, considering it was supposed to be a rebuilt box. having just spent £750 on getting it done i don't think i can give it to a garage again to remove the box.

Re: Rebuilt gearbox starting to crunch into 3rd after c.100 miles

baulk ring probably, which translated to what i think they are refering to it means a synchro is "baulking" ie it needs to be rebuilt again

Re: Rebuilt gearbox starting to crunch into 3rd after c.100 miles

To align the linkage, i put it in fourth, get someone to hold the gearstick there, loosen, let it sit nicely, then tighten up.

Done it a few times, and always worked perfectly for me.

That is the way I did mine.. seemed to work spot on :)

would be, but i bought the box from tony@burpspeed, who had it rebuilt by agency. tony's going to speak to the chap at burpspeed who usually deals with agency, i need them to take the box in and fix it for free, cause at the moment its not a fully rebuilt box- the garage told me its leaking from the main seal (where you split the box in two) so its definitely not been rebuilt properly

gearbox is leaking on the main seal too, so i need to get tony/burpspeed to take it back to agency and get them to sort it foc. its supposed to be a rebuilt box!

Offer still stands, mate. I'll bring some tools over and remove the box at yours, or you can leave it on my driveway if needed.

Chuck me some beer money and we'll have it back in no time.
