braking problem- help needed please

  VX220 lightning
Ok, given the credit crunch, I thought I would change the pads, discs and bleed them myself.

Following these helpful links I managed to change the discs, pads and bleed the brakes.

I thought I would give it a test run and within about 5 mins I managed to overheat them!:S I wasn't driving fast but did do a few hard stops from about 40/50 and then some more at about 20 , after which there was lots of smoke and smell.

The other thing I noticed was the feel of the pedal when braking hard. Normally if you brake hard the peddle gets stiff and you cannot push it further, and the abs kicks in. What I'm getting now is initial resistance then the peddle gives in a bit and I can push it further!?!?!? <- is this just because they were over heating!?

Please help.
